No doubt it was a home-run. Either way I'll be rooting the Rockies to do well in the post-season. They managed one heck of a come back to squeeze in at teh very end and made things really exciting. Still can't believe trevor let this one get away from us like that. Heartbreaking...PRBoom wrote:Did he touch the plate? maybe, maybe not.
did Atkins hit a HR earlier? maybe, maybe not
I think the calls evened out, but I'm obviously biased and I have no problems admitting it.
Very entertaining game, either way
Oh yeah. That's exactly why you do not come into home plate head first. Guy's got a huge strawberry on his chin and a gash taken out of his left hand. Lucky it wasn't worse as he easily could have dislocated a shoulder or something.oh great and now I get to hear Holliday whining about Barrett stepping on his freakin hand.
Hopefully he's learned a little something from that experience lol.
Sliding head first wouldn't be the hazard that it is if the umpires would enforce the obstruction rule properly.PRBoom wrote:Oh yeah. That's exactly why you do not come into home plate head first. I can live with the start times, but I cannot live with the fact that I can't watch these games in HiDef!!Brando70 wrote:Those 10pm Eastern start times for the Cubs games are killers for me. Bye bye sleep!
Oh well, I suppose that I could watch on the 32" TV in the bedroom and pretend that it's 1997.

How would instant replay have helped in this situation? I know he didn't touch the plate, but because Barrett didn't have the ball he wasn't out either. It should have been a non-call with the runner/catcher racing to get to the plate or make the out. How could instant replay have been used to recreate that scenario? Again, he might not have been safe...but he certainly wasn't out, either.macsomjrr wrote:Yeah no $hit. INSTANT REPLY! INSTANT REPLY! INSTANT REPLY! C'mon, why not??? Such BS. After the way trevor was pitching though I doubt it would've matter if he had been called out.Diablo25 wrote:Wow, poor call to end the game. Holliday never touched the plate.

wow, great job by mlb to move these over to tbs. I'm sure those casual fans that they want to watch the playoffs will pick tbs as their first channel choice to view the games.
Wouldn't it been smarter just to stick with ESPN? Sure they got outbid, but games on HD ESPN and the casual fan knowing the channel the games will be aired would make up for anything tbs paid out.

After the play at the plate, didn't Barrett pick the ball up and go to tag Holliday? The ump motioned safe when he saw that happening. I'm not sure if Barrett followed through, and tagged him, but he definitely made the attempt.drbaseball wrote:How would instant replay have helped in this situation? I just watched the video. He wasn't tagged until after the call of safe. Yes, Barrett is heading for him before the call, but doesn't get there until afterward. Yes, it is close, but it still comes after the call. Once the umpire called Holliday safe, why would he have a need to continue to make it to the plate and out race the tag?
Again, the umpire should have left it as a non call until either the tag was made or Holliday touched the plate. Instant replay would not have resolved that reality.
I am in support of instant replay for baseball. I just don't think this is the example for making the case.
The umps whole reaction to the play was one of he didnt touch the plate, and no call would be made until the runner scurried back and touched the plate, safe, or the catcher got the ball and tagged the runner out, out.
It looked like the ump was doing that until the end where I guess he thought to himself, well, it's such a late game, and I got to get some sleep, so f*** it, he's safe.
added : another thing I was thinking, barret should have tried to sell it to the ump that he never touched the plate. Instead of casually getting the ball, he should have rushed it and tagged Halladay out, maybe that could have worked. But with the crowd going wild, I think the ump was affected.
Think if there was an abandonment play? Where there's no call, and the runner goes back to the dugout, then he's automatically out. Think the chaos that would have caused. Maybe that's what the ump was trying to avoid, getting his ass beaten by making the right call.

These are my thoughts exactly. And I don't see how replay would have helped?Inuyasha wrote:The umps whole reaction to the play was one of he didnt touch the plate, and no call would be made until the runner scurried back and touched the plate, safe, or the catcher got the ball and tagged the runner out, out.

Ump: "You know I'm not sure if he tagged the plate or not, maybe I should call up stairs and have the special replay umpire check for me"drbaseball wrote:These are my thoughts exactly. Special Upstairs Replay Ump: "Looks like he didn't tag and then Barrett recovered the ball and tagged him, he's OUT!"
Ump: "Thanks special replay ump. Hey everybody at Coors field he is OUT!"
Me: "Hell yeah! Go Barrett! Go Barrett! Go Barrett!"
How would instant replay not have helped in this situation? I will say that the home-run that bounced back in probably would've been called a HR as well though meaning Rockies win anyway. Seriously just give each manager two chances too have a play reviewed. Where is the harm in that?
