Agreed...as one of the commenters puts it, there goes $60 and a year of my life.

Anyone played any of the Civ series on a mac? If so, are they just lame ports, or good distinct versions? I've never played on anything but a PC, but there may be a macbook pro entering my life between now and the time this game comes out.

Civ IV has both versions on the disk if I recall. At least I recall playing it on my Mac Laptop. Perhaps I had XP running, now I can't recall.

I never got IV but the others worked fine on a Mac. No issues at all.

I tried the Mac demo of IV after running the PC version with boot camp. Besides being full price a year later I didn't see any functional differences.

Looking forward to V big time.

Just ordered Civ V from Amazon, had a credit.

Anyone else picking this one up Tuesday? I stayed with the free shipping, so it's probably going to be the weekend before I can start playing.

Initial Impression is Wow! :D

Only issue is it is a little laggy in DX10 so I switched to Dx9 mode

So I'm guessing I should just keep DX9 loaded and not go to 10?

Not sure i understand your question. When you launch the game it asks you to either launch in DX10/11 or DX9. I've run much more graphically intensive DX10 games with no problem so I am not sure what the issue is with this game. But DX9 version with everything on high runs like butter.

Best enhancements so far

- No unit stacking
- Units can do their own naval movement
- Policy choices are fun
- GUI is outstanding

After pretty much a decade hiatus from PC gaming, I recently bought a gaming PC (needed to buy a new PC anyway and got a great deal) and am absolutely in love with this game. I really enjoyed Civ Revolutions on the 360 but this game just blows it away.

There's so much depth and variety and yet the UI is phenominal making everything easily acessible. I didn't do any of the tutorials, just jumped right into a game, and didn't feel lost at all. The fact that you can't unit stack now is huge as it forces you to approach combat from a much more tactical standpoint.

I already finished one campaign with a standard military victory (the entire game took about 14 hours but was worth it to take down Napoleon's French with my small army of mechs!!!) and right afterwards started a brand new game.

The game is also really pretty! :)

I've been thinking of buying this game but have read a lot of negatives about the game such as "poor system performance i.e. slowdowns, stupid AI, boring". For those that have and played the game is the above true?

Performance seems fine to me but I'm not sure what kind of system you have. Most of the complaints I hear are about poor AI and balance issues. It seems that Military Victory is much easier to obtain than anything else. There is less micro-management and a lot of the hardcore fans really miss that. They released a patch that was supposed to address some of these issues but I haven't played it since then.

For you reference my system is:
Core 2 Duo e7600 overclocked to 3.4ghz
4 GB RAM
ATI 5750 (i think this is what i have, i don't use my system much anymore so i could be mistaken)

It runs perfectly fine for me with all details set to high. Turns can take a little longer in the later stages of the game but that has more to do with the CPU than the GPU. It doesn't affect my enjoyment of the game at all.
"Be tolerant of those who describe a sporting moment as their best ever. We do not lack imagination, nor have we had sad and barren lives; it is just that real life is paler, duller, and contains less potential for unexpected delirium." -Nick Hornby

Danimal's post in the x-com thread reminded me that you get a free copy of this when you pre-order X-COM on Steam (something I had completely forgot) sooooo.....if anyone is interested in a free Steam code for Civ V (the full game) PM me.
