If the Cardinals sign him it's because he is more valuable than his on-the-field production. It's a tough call, because St. Louis draws like mad, anyway. But if the Cardinals bean counters think they can make money on him, I have no problem overpaying him. If they decide not to, I can't blame them for that either, as these kinds of deal tend to blow-up in teams' faces. Basically, I trust the guys with the money to make the right decision, and I can live with either.

I have heard conjecture that Pujols may avoid the AL because he does not want to become a DH. He's bull-headed enough to do that, but I have no idea if that is true or not. But my gut is that Pujols is going to give St. Louis every opportunity to match any offers he receives. I can't blame Pujols for taking the biggest paycheck he can find, as this is truly his last shot at mega dollars.
Good points, I'm not sure why he would even consider Florida - unless it's to see what his worth is? I still like to believe he would want to stay/go somewhere he has another shot at a title.

Florida wins titles. They just tear down the team down after doing so. Having Albert to help fill-up a new stadium would be pretty attractive. Plus, Florida has all those great tax laws (or lack of) that these dudes LOVE.

edit: As a Cards fan, I want Albert back. I really don't care how much they pay him & how long the deal is. I don't write the checks. I read that The Cards made an EXTRA $30 million by making it to the World Series this year. They don't get a sniff of that without him. If they make it back a few more times, his deal pays for itself. If they don't, trade him to the Yankees in 5 years!

They don't get a sniff of that without Carpenter, Motte, Berkman, Freese, the Braves, etc.. :)

I hear what you're saying and I'd love for him to finish out his career in St. Louis, just not for 10 years/$300 million.

The Twins are going to pay Jamie Carroll $7 Million for 2 years. $30 million a year will be a bargain before ya know it!

I take it back. Uniforms don't look same as they did in the sketches/drawings. The multi-colored logo/emblem kills it for me. pass

Apparently the Cardinals are set to announce that Mike Matheny will be their new manager. Press conference rumored to be tomorrow or Monday.

I'm not nearly so happy. 90% of being a good manger or head coach in football is about managing people and preparing them. It's about creating an environment where players can excel.

I just don't see where Matheny has that kind of experience. He might be great, but the Cardinals job is worth giving to someone who proved himself already, at least on the minor league level. The team is built to compete for the next several years. Why waste it training a guy for a job he has never held.

It really lacks any common sense.

Booooo! This is the cardinals, not an on-the-job training facility. I like Matheny as a player, but I'd rather not burn a couple years hoping he can manage in the majors. Let him go cut his teeth on the some other club like the royals or Indians or something.

It took me a while to get there, but I'm now on-board with Francona. He's WON, he's dealt with the media, ego's, "big $$ contract" guys, a die-hard fan base, and isn't a complete chap-ass. PLUS, after the way Boston treated him on his way out, you know he'd love nothing more than to win & stick it to them.

I'd be 100% on-board with Francona. Other than that? White Herzog baby!!! Let's get the band back together! The White Rat! Whoooo! :)

That's why he'd be a great fit. The Cardinals have a rich history of boozin'..

I'm willing to give him a chance, but I won't hesitate to drop a 'told ya so' if he turns out to be a disaster.

I really think these teams that bring in guys who have never managed or coached at any level are really setting themselves up for failure.

We've seen it now with the White Sox and Cards this offseason and I think it is just a huge gamble that has little chance of paying off for either team.

.. not in the dugout.. :)

I don't think managing has that big of an effect in baseball, put LaRussa on the Pirates and see how they do. As long as Duncan is there to assist, I think Matheny will do just fine.

How much would you be willing bet on that? It's been a part of baseball forever. It was only an issue because the Red Sox management was looking to save their own @ss.

http://articles.nydailynews.com/2011-10 ... e-insiders

All I'm saying is that it's a none issue, and goes on waaay more than people think. A number "old" sports writers, like John Heyman & Kornheiser, said it goes on everywhere. But ok, it doesn't matter now anyway.

I completely agree with you that managers get too much blame/credit though. Bring on the Matheny era! Go Cards! I hope he rocks it (and keep Dave Duncan!!!!).
