So many boxy, open warehouse areas or narrow corridors. The only wide open spaces are the f*ckin' dreaded wasteland portions on the large maps from the spawn point to the objectives.
I was as geek'd over the release of this game as anyone and I want to love it but I'm just not feeling the map design at all. Gameplay is fine, but man, there is absolutely no 'wow' factor for me with any maps. I STILL get a 'wow' factor from maps in BF:BC2. Some of the vistas and colors with all the chaos is incredible. Not really seeing any of that here.
You are re-raising the fears I had about the beta, and that Operation Metro is representative of the majority of maps in the final game.

Not sure, Spook. The irony is that you, like me, liked Metro in the beta. lol. I've had a lot of fun with the maps, for the most part. There are one or two that are a little bottlenecked in spots, but I love the huge maps. Maybe getting in a squad together and doing some actual teamwork will help.
I can't figure out how to post a youtube video on this site the tag doesn't seem to work.
This is what the game looks like on my PC and frankly the video doesn't do it justice it's the best I can do with Fraps. Sorry the adjectives I used to describe the game were over the top for some. I was just stating what it felt like going from one to the other. If you have the ability to play it on the PC the advantages are IMO better draw distances, easier to pick out targets etc.

Not sure why you guys think you need a top of the line rig to run it. I'm running a 2.8ghz i7 860 w/ 8gb ram and an ATI 5850 and I can run it at high detail at 1920x1200...you can build my machine for under like 750-800 these days, easy...and it'll still blow the doors off the 360 (yes, I've played both).
Back to the game itself, I've only played the SP so far and damn, it's pretty f'n sweet. Nothing new and exciting as far as storylines go, but it's still pretty fun.
Teal, Spook.. Thanks for the invites. My new kitten thought he'd eat through the cord on my headset earlier today so I had no voice chat. I'll be getting something new tomorrow.
I was pricing a Falcon NW system (Talon) and that bad boy comes out to around $2,300 with an i7 2600K CPU, ATI 6970, and liquid cooling. a DIY with similar specs would come out to around $1,200.
Had a few really fun rounds of Rush with Teal (and Game7 - not sure why you couldn't get in our squad) last night. Left a better taste in my mouth for the maps we played (Tehran Highway and the downtown Paris one) but I had already kinda liked the two maps from trying them earlier. They don't feel as stale as some of the others. The downtown Paris one is kinda odd at the end with the narrowed objectives and the whole bank area thing (again, feel like they were trying to be to much like CoD). But at least those maps have character. That's really what I feel like 80% of the maps are lacking. It's not the overall layout or any concerns of 'bottlenecking' - it's really more of a lack of character. Seriously, compare the map design here to the ones in BC2 and especially the Vietnam pack and you'll see what I mean.
The installation process was EPIC! First, there's not one but TWO discs to install to your hard drive. Then when you boot up, there's a 167MB update to download. But are we done yet? Not even close! Then you get to enter your Little Orphan Annie Super Secret Decorder Ring code, which is just pi out to 100 digits, and THEN install another 1.5 gigs of enhanced textures that didn't get installed when the multiplayer disc was getting installed. Did I just blow your mind?! THEN and ONLY THEN could I not get online. EXTREME!

Thanks for the invites and it was really odd... I seemed to have been in your game to start, then Teal hit me with a party/game invite so I'd assumed I'd gotten into the wrong match. When I accepted, it dumped me out and back in, so I think I was a minute or two behind you.
But the strangest thing to me was it took me the whole round to realize I *was* in your game last night on Tehran Bridge. I had to bail after before the Paris level. Does the game use alternate names in game, because I couldn't find either of your gamertags in the match? I only realized we were in the same match towards the end when we were defending and I heard you guys referring to the same captures from the opponents that I was seeing.
I'm hoping last nights MP mess clears up soon but I am still confused by some of the non-intuitive implementation.
We had a party of 4 guys grew to 8 or 9. So I invite 3 guys into a squad. They get the invite via Xbox Live like an invite to play a game when they accept it puts them on the main BF3 menu which seems odd. Most of them click on MP not knowing what to do. As the person starting the squad I got no indication they had joined my squad I had to go in and hit Manage squad to see who was in.
Eventually once we got 4 I tried to join a game, now this was with quick matchmaking. It put 3 of us in the game, left one out. 2 of us were on one team and not in the same squad and the other was on the other team.
Maybe I am missing the obvious but there seems to be no easy way to get everyone in a single game and maintain your squad. It seems hit or miss by server load. As much as I detest Halo is it really that hard for any other publisher to steal their matchmaking system?
Seems to me the easiest thing to do is enter a game and inite friends into it from there.
I'd love to do a big DSP game but unless I am missing the options it seems like there is going to be a lot of hoop jumping to get it done.
Someone correct me if I am wrong.

All I know is that their LIVE integration and menu system/interface is AWFUL! Ugh. Play this and then play GoW3 and that is why I say that GoW is a 'perfect' video game from an interface and online integration standpoint.
I've always found the interfaces and menus for battlefield games to be very opaque, but I'll just chalk up last night to opening night server nightmares.
I'm not working today and put in some time this morning. Initially I couldn't connect but all's well since then.
Feels a lot like a solid sequel BC2 rather than something revolutionary, but it's a good time. You've got to be really careful on some maps because there's really not any sprawling space to work with.
Also you gotta love the players that are already rank 20 by this morning.

I sent an application for the platoon. If you want a killer like me whose kill ratio is like .12 then accept it!
Finally got some extended time with this today. I had no problems with the maps. There were definitely some confined spaces, but nothing that really bothered me.
The menus and interface are awful. Whoever decided that the screen should go all blurry with interference every time you change weapon in the load-out screen ought to be drawn and quartered. WTF is the point of that?
