This is why there should be a next-gen console out by now.

This generation has lasted longer than the previous one before a next-gen console came out.

They've extended it with motion-controllers and newer designs but the graphics technology has been lapped several times by the PC market.

Installed base of 1080p displays should be pretty high now (remember at the beginning of the generation people questioned whether many people would have 1080p)? Time for true 1080p rendered games.

I've watched that trailer 3 times now - every time I see that jet in the final scenes I get a woody. Can't wait! :D

Interview with the producer of the game, which used the PC as the lead platform:

Coincidentally, he says the console is holding gaming back.

First home console footage last night on Fallon;

And the same footage from previous (PC) trailer;

A lot less wow factor, but certainly not bad at all.

I'm mildly concerned at the way the stone on those balconies virtually explodes from the 5.56mm rounds of the M16. Seems like they might be overdoing it to show off the destructible environments maybe.

I think the game looks excellent and I can't wait until Oct 25th.

I might as well preorder now. :)

"Battlefield 3 on Console Will Run At Half PC Frame Rate"

"Over the weekend, DICE confirmed that Battlefield 3 will run at 30 frames per second on consoles, half the framerate of the PC version. The developer claims that this will allow a greater degree of graphical detail whilst enabling the consoles to cope better with vehicles and multiplayer.

***

"Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer, meanwhile, have consistently claimed that Modern Warfare 3 will never dip below 60fps. How much does framerate matter? Does the promise of double Battlefield 3's framerate give Modern Warfare 3 an advantage over its rival that it didn't have before? Or is it ultimately an irrelevant specification?"

Actually I would say the opposite--I would rather a game have less impressive graphics but run at 60fps then have better graphics at 30fps. I've always found fps to make a shooter feel much better and smoother to control.

But as I've said before, all previous console battlefield games ran at 30fps, and all MW games ran at 60, so there's nothing here to change status quo.

That's why I put the little 'dude' in there...it was a bit tongue-in-cheek. I can play both BF:BC2 and and MW game, and have no problems, graphically or performance-wise, with either. Don't think it's a big deal.

And, I'll add, that while the MW FPS makes the game look 'slicker', I am reminded that I'm playing a game when I play a 60fps game. Conversely, playing BF:BC games, and other shooters that are 30 fps, they have a 'grittier' look to them that I actually prefer. For me, it's easier to suspend disbelief with those games.

You know I was watching a how-to video on BF:BC2 strategy recently and felt like a COMPLETE moron. All this time it's been a mystery to me why things showed up on radar in BF games. I had no idea about the spot button.

I have been playing the game completely differently now, hanging back more, spotting, doing team actions. I'm still far too impatient to "camp", but it does provide a really different experience. The gun-on-gun action is still mediocre and laggy IMO, but the other aspects is where the real entertainment is, and I feel like I "get it" a bit more now.

LOL. :oops:

Oh yes...always hate it when people don't use the spot feature. The gunplay definitely takes a little time to adjust to especially if coming from CoD.

I went from not even knowing about the spot feature, to using it obsessively and getting really angry when none of my teammates are using it. :lol: If people are spotting it makes a huge difference IMO, though I am a huge UAV guy in COD too.

It's funny because when I first started playing BC2 I felt the same, but now it feels really good to me and I never, ever feel cheated during 1 v 1 battles (something that can't be said for every other shooter I've played).

Well part of it is accepting the lagginess, and knowing that just because it looked like you were going to turn the tables on someone they really had you all along, it just took a second for you to drop. It's still "fair" at the end of the day.

Still, about once a match, if not more, there's a double kill where my opponent and I both kill each other at the same time. I don't think that should be happening.

Cool stuff. I particularly like the support class features to bring another element to gameplay.
Our Assault class is still the frontline run and gun class, and considering the havoc and fallen team members someone will see while on the frontlines, the Assault soldier now has medic abilities. That’s right, all the abilities such as medkits and defibrillators typically found on the Medic class are now incorporated into Assault. It makes sense that the class on the frontline will be able to revive fallen team mates, right?
This brings us to two new features in Battlefield 3: Bipods and Suppressive Fire. Bipods have a very practical use, especially for LMGs, as they provide a substantial increase in stability while laying down a base of fire. Bipods can be deployed anywhere by zooming in with your LMG when prone, or when standing/kneeling in front of suitable supports, such as a window sill. The stability created by deploying a Bipod gives players a massive boost in accuracy and recoil reduction. You’ll be able to unload an entire clip of 200 bullets from your LMG with great accuracy without even letting go of the trigger, all thanks to the Bipod.

Suppressive Fire is a new in-game mechanic that changes how you can play the game. When you lay down fire in close vicinity to an enemy, the incoming barrage will show up as a graphical blur effect on his screen to stress him and let him know it’s not safe to pop out from behind cover. Just as importantly, this mechanic also affects his character’s in-game firing accuracy, making him less of a threat by using real world tactics. Better yet? You get team play experience points for doing so!

“Supported shooting with Bipods and Suppressive Fire finally allows us to achieve an obvious difference between Assault and Support, since the heavy LMGs are not terribly mobile,” explains Kertz. “When deployed with a Bipod, they become an incredibly powerful force. Suppressive Fire forces the enemy to keep their head down and lets the Support gunner pin his enemies in place so teammates can flank.”

Love the blur effect with suppression fire. Sounds very cool.
I've continued to play BF:BC2 every few nights to maintain my (albeit weak) skills. Been playing regular old team deathmatch and the games have been great.

Cant wait for this.

I've been playing a boat load of conquest the last week or so. After not having played this game in a few months I was quickly reminded just how sweet it is.
