So I call and actually get through after a wait of about 5 minutes. This is what I was told. "We're sorry, but due to the outage we cannot access your account either"

Odd as it may sound, i'm not sure if I gave sony my CC info. Is there a way to verify that without being able to log into PSN?
Look at your next monthly statement for unusual charges, then you'll know. :)
Why wait that long? Login online and look at your recent transaction history. Also if you're scared, cancel the card and have a new one sent.

Fortunately I do not have a CC attached with PSN and that's only because Sony has made it easy to remove a CC tied to your profile. Can't say the same with XBL.. Had to make a call which took over 30 minutes and then it was still a pain in the arse.

Some people are claiming fraudulent charges already, including an alleged $8000 charge in Japan.

You should be able to check recent transactions for your card online. Lot of companies have security depts. which proactively monitor patterns and cancel cards. A couple of years ago, there were some charges on one of my cards in Indiana, a place I've never been to. These were retail transactions.

The card company reversed all charges and sent me a new card after calling me and asking if I recognized those transactions.

I'd imagine that it going to be just the very tip of the iceberg. Sony's likely to take a very serious hit from the class action suits that get launched around the world. It's reasonably likely that they've committed a significant breach of their duty of care with customer information. The exposure in the U.S. has got to have them freaking out given the general lack of limitations on punitive damages that you'd see in jurisdictions like Canada. I think we may see a sterling example here of a penny wise, pound foolish if it turns out that they skimped on the resources they invested in their online security system or otherwise cut corners.

Best wishes,

Doug

Sony enlists FBI as US, Canadian authorities look into PSN breach
http://www.gamespot.com/news/6310487.ht ... Btitle%3B1

"This morning, the British government's Information Commissioner's Office announced it was opening an inquiry into the ongoing PlayStation Network outage and data leak. Now, US and Canadian government bodies have joined the chorus demanding answers about the exposure, which could potentially lead to the theft of up to 77 million PSN users' personal information.

Reuters reports that US Representative Mary Bono Mack (R-California) has asked members of the US House of Representatives' subcommittee for commerce, manufacturing, and trade to begin looking into the data leak. Mack, the widow of the late US Representative Sonny Bono, chairs the subcommittee, which will apparently soon weigh in on whether hearings are needed on the matter. Bono Mack's move comes one day after US Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) called on Sony to offer full disclosure to PSN users if their information was compromised.

Reuters also reports that Sony has contacted the San Diego office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation's cybercrimes unit to look into the data breach. The news service could not get public comment, but did cite unnamed sources as saying say the law enforcement body was investigating the matter."

I'm enjoying this outage. I can actually put a new game in and play it immediately without having to sit through long updates. Sucks that my identity might be stolen, but at least I can play games faster!

Don't think I had any CC info with them, but honestly I've been through this 3-4 times in the last 10 years. Always a hassle when someone gets my account info (either from online hacking, double-swiping at a restaurant, etc) and charges up my card. Credit card companies have always been good about it but it's just a hassle.

Agreed, excellent article. The difference between Sony and MS is when MS got caught over the RROD they did the right thing even if their hand was forced.

This may very well be a mountain being made out of a molehill. Sony is not run by idiots, therefore my impression of this whole affair is that Sony is still trying to assess exactly what is going on before it makes any rash moves. All because someone on a bulletin board says they are trying to sell user information and cc numbers does not mean they are legit and actually have information to sell. It could be attention seekers or scammers. Media outlets reporting this purported selling of information are jumping the gun without any proof whatsoever. I'm willing to give Sony more time to make things right and fix whatever problem exists. The PSN service being down is not the end of the world. The people who are claiming their cc #s are being used illegally I feel bad for, but let's be honest here -- it's entirely possible that their cc #s were stolen elsewhere and not due to the troubles at Sony (the odds of some people out of millions on PSN experiencing cc fraud is pretty good even without the hackers taking info). I've dealt with cc fraud on a couple of occasions that had nothing to do with a database of customer information being stolen -- s*** happens. I don't know what people expect out of Sony since the company is scrambling to investigate what happened and make their system more secure. If indeed all this coverage is not just fear-mongering and it is as bad as advertised then I would expect Sony to make things right. For the time being, however, I am not going to worry about it and get bent out of shape until there is hard proof that fraud is taking place with my personal information.

Best thing I've read today is Sony saying that people don't have to worry about the CVN codes being compromised. Only reason is Sony didn't ask for them LOL!

I feel so much better! it's good to know that any information I didn't provide Sony is secure. :)

What a stupid article. Is this guy serious when he says:

"The company should be booking halls around the country and inviting PSN users in for an open Q&A -- hosted by a genuine tough-journalist, not some rent-a-mic ass kisser -- all shown live and connected to an impressive social media wave. All the nasty stuff's got to come out sooner or later -- better this way than in some painful Senate investigation on CSPAN.

Instead of leaving hundreds of loyal followers bobbing around in the frigid seas of its blog, questions unanswered, Sony should have a small armies of nice people contacting the fans directly, offering encouragement and support.

Sony should be booking ads outlining exactly what it's doing, and releasing video docs on YouTube showing us men in white coats explaining what happened, how it's going to be fixed, and what the affected consumers should do. Deutsch/LA should be working on a new ad right now in which Kevin Butler does his thing, getting everyone on board Sony's transparent and believable story about the crisis."

What a load of garbage. And c'mon, Rod...you really think Microsoft responded admirably with the RROD? The 360 launched in November 2005, and " n the early months after the console's launching, Microsoft stated that the Xbox 360's failure rate was within the consumer electronics industry's typical 3% to 5%."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xbox_360_t ... ite_note-4

It wasn't until almost 2 years later, "[o]n July 5, 2007, [when] the Vice-President of Microsoft's Interactive Entertainment Business division published an open letter recognizing the console's problems, as well as announcing a three-year warranty extension for every Xbox 360 console that experiences the "general hardware failure" indicated by three flashing red LEDs on the console."

Is sticking your head in the sand for close to 2 years that much better than how Sony's handled this situation?

Anyways, I still say it's much ado about nothing. Some people like to hate on Sony though, the same way I've hated on EA, so I guess more power to 'em.

Of the 77 million PSN users, 10 million people had their credit cards attached to Sony. Wow!

Here's some damage control on the way:

I'm still not too worried about my cc# being stolen and used, but am glad I used the one I normally use for sketchy retailers. I have a Visa with a limit of only a couple thousand that I use for online sites and stores I do not normally buy from and for things like gas stations and mini marts.

Well, evidently part of the PSN is back up, as I got Motorstorm Apocalypse today and the first thing it did was start a 201 MB update followed by one of 128 MB. Man, I hate getting a new game then having to wait while the crap updates.

I played Little Big Planet 2 with my daughter Saturday night and was able to get an update. I'm not sure if that was ever disabled. I was surprised when it happened though because I didn't expect it.
