Aye, that's a bit of an issue, isn't it? Something they're looking into fixing in the upcoming patch, though you surely wouldn't need the world's most stringent, rigorous QA team to pick up on how it seems to happen to everyone once every couple of races.
I was at a mate's house over the weekend going through a few career races with him. If you think Spain's fun, wait until you try to fathom out Hungary. He qualified 6th, held station in the opening laps, then fell to 15th or so after his pitstop. I'm sure he hadn't been holding people up, his pace was good and yet he didn't ever look like getting back into the points. His team mate Trulli, having qualified 23rd, made a pit stop quick enough to defy science and somehow emerged some distance ahead of our hero in spite of how I still hadn't clocked a loss of pace or a single mistake from the player. Trulli, among others, made a second pitstop later on but still our Lotus was occupying a gentleman's 12th place when my mate slid off on worn tyres with a lap left.
Sure that couldn't possibly be right, he selected Restart Race and gave me the pad. Thanks to a string of rubbish starts from the AI ahead, I took the lead early on and pulled away, so I was somewhat mystified to emerge from my pitstop in 19th place and just sort of stay there. I could feel how the 'dirty air' from cars ahead affects the handling, which I'd never noticed before, and that stopped me making significant headway into the cars immediately ahead of me, but I didn't gain much ground through other cars pitting either. Trulli ran exactly the same pit routine as before, I attained the dizzy heights of 14th before having a spin I couldn't really explain on the last lap and chugging home 18th, and the entire thing made not a single lick of sense.
There were races in another Codies effort, ToCA Race Driver 3, where I felt like I was racing the cast of Police Academy but that in the middle of it all, I was Steve Guttenberg. There was plenty of borderline incompetence on display, but my driving seemed to fit in somehow. The race described above wasn't really like that - neither I nor my mate made an error worth the name until our last laps and we were still miles out of position - but the bloody thing was still all kinds of fun regardless.
