NFL Season 2009

As Bill Parcells like to say: "You are what you're record says you are". I believe the Dolphins this year were a 7-9 to 8-8 team and without going back and doing a search in this thread that's what I think I said they would be.icvu42 wrote:Not to make excuses for the Dolphins, because they had plenty of chances this year and failed to capitalize. But man their schedule was brutal. They played only 3 teams that finished the season below .500, Buffalo, Tampa Bay and Jacksonville.
I'll be more than happy to see that 3rd place schedule next season.
Rick
Look at all the Dolphins losses this year. They were either in the lead or played the other side close and that's with a brutal schedule. Last year I felt the Dolphins were a 5-11/6-10 team. They surprised everyone because of Parcells, the players he brought in which some of them were not on the team this year in lieu of getting younger and they had an easy schedule.
Looking at next year you have Henne, Vonte Davis, Sean Smith, Brian Hartline getting better. Devon Bess, man I hope he gets a call to the Pro Bowl. Greg Camarillo was solid as well. The future looks bright for the Phins. Acording to the Sun Sentinel, Dan Henning isn't sure if he'll be back next year. Could that be Charlie Weis' spot? Who knows.
Overall I think the Dolphins did a decent job on offense and gave up waaaaaaaaaay tooooooooooo many big plays on defense. That's what hurt them in most of their losses. Remember Payton Manning who rarely saw the ball in their matches and almost scored at will and still beat the Dolphins.
I'm surprised the Dolphins had a chance going into the last week of the season. With their insane schedule, combined with losing their two most important players from last season (Pennington and Brown), making the playoffs would have been tough. At least the loss today was a net good; I think the Dolphins went from picking 17th next year to picking 12th by losing. Considering Houston's win, it was better to lose that game.
Welker got hurt on his first reception. Dallas Clark had 7, Wayne 5, and Peyton threw 18 times in the snow and artificial surface in Buffalo. So Caldwell unncessarily exposed his players to injury IMO and if anything should replace his middle fingers with miniature Jesus' as his prayers were answered. I guess getting Clark to 100 catches was more important than the Super Bowl.RobVarak wrote:Loved Dan LeBatard's tweet today. He said that Jim Caldwell is having his two middle fingers amputated and replaced with miniature Wes Welkers.
If there is a football God the Jets knock off Cincy (I don't have a problem with the Bengals laying down as it was the last game but the Jets would have to beat them to move on) and Indy.
I think the Welker injury is not a result of a poor decision on Belichick's part. It helps keep a team in synch to let the starters play for a little bit in an otherwise meaningless game, and I can see why Welker would have been in the game. But it also shows why the Colts should not be criticized for pulling players against the Jets. Every snap increases the chances of a player getting hurt, and after your starters get some snaps to keep them in rhythm, why keep them in longer?
As for the playoffs, it's one of the most unpredictable fields I can remember. The Saints and Vikings have looked beatable and the Eagles blew any momentum they had in their loss yesterday. The Packers are playing the best football of anyone in the conference, but three road playoff games is a tough hurdle for any team. So who knows?
In the AFC, the two best teams are the 31st and 32nd rushing teams in the league. It's hard to fathom the Colts or Chargers making the Super Bowl when they can't run the football. The Pats looked like a strong contender, but what happens without Welker? So again, who knows?
The only thing I know is that this is far more interesting than anything the NCAA is going to do this week.

The JETS deserve to be there. They won out the last 2 games and totally dominated CINCY who claimed they were out to win that game. They have the #1 Defense statistically in the league and a great running game.XXXIV wrote:RobVarak wrote:Loved Dan LeBatard's tweet today. They might surprise a few teams.
They are there and they did look damn good last night and could be a surprise in the playoffs...but.. I dont think they deserve anything.JackB1 wrote:The JETS deserve to be there. .XXXIV wrote:RobVarak wrote:Loved Dan LeBatard's tweet today. EDIT: To be clear. I dont feel sympathy for the Texans or Steelers. They both did some pretty dumb things during the season. Texans had great shots at the Colts twice and couldnt close the deals....the Steelers lost to the Raiders, Browns etc...
Great episode of lousy NFL team kabuki today at Halas Hall. Watching the team President, GM and head coach explain why the OC had to be the fall guy even though it's clear to anyone with eyes that a top-to-bottom restructuring is needed was quite entertaining.
Nobody could actually come out and say that there would be no additional firings because the McCaskeys decided that they didn't want to eat any additional money going into the 2010 labor mess. So instead we got this bizarre demonstration of a business organization in total chaos.
The President says that the players, coaching and roster construction were all to blame and were unacceptable. GM "agrees" except for the part about the roster being a problem...it was just peachy. And the Coach "agrees" that there was no problem at all with the coaching...somehow ignoring the fact that they've just fired the OC.
Seldom have so many agreed about so little while claiming to agree so much.
Idiots every last one of them.

I really think their problems are personnel more than anything. Not that Lovie is great shakes as a coach, but I don't think he's the main problem. Teams just can't consistent whiff on draft pics and free agent acquisitions the way the Bears have and expect to succeed. But for whatever reason Angelo seems to have free reign to continue doing things like trading away Thomas Jones and acquiring malnourished DEs.RobVarak wrote:Great episode of lousy NFL team kabuki today at Halas Hall. Wild Card Weekend predictions:
Jets over Bengals - Bengals haven't looked good for weeks, pre-Henry accident.
Cowboys over Eagles - Cowboys are hot and at home right now. I don't think it will be the beatdown that occured last weekend but they should still get the win.
Patriots over Ravens - Pats at home is basically the only reason I'm picking them.
Packers over Cardinals - Packers are too hot right now and the Cardinals have some key injuries. Packers have the better running game too.

Bengals trying to turn it on on offense after being conservative most of the season, relying on their defense to keep games close.
IOW, the old Baltimore Ravens/NYG smashmouth approach.
Defense has been good most of the season but they're no longer able to carry the team.
Why do teams keep going with this philosophy? It's good enough to get you to the playoffs but then the offensive unit has to make plays, which is hard to do if you've been keeping it on a tight leash all season.

Jets D gives the Bengals a Deacon Jones smack upside the head.
Sanchez with a nice controlled Bob Griesesque game especially for a Rookie.
Go Jets!?

That would be pretty cool unless you are a Colts fan.Leebo33 wrote: If there is a football God the Jets knock off Cincy (I don't have a problem with the Bengals laying down as it was the last game but the Jets would have to beat them to move on) and Indy.
