I don't think it competition is the main factor, they have had competition in this genre for years. I think not enough credit goes to Peter Moore, one year in and the attitude is different.

Not discounting competition as a factor, but it's not all about that or it wouldn't of just started happening.

I would bet you are 100% correct.

p.s. I am STILL waiting for my gamefly copy!!!! Will one of you f*ckers return your copy already! :)
 Jack I returned my copy (360) this past Saturday. Hopefully it's headed your way soon.

Hope so! :)

I don't know what's going on with Gamefly lately? Sometimes it takes 2-3 weeks to get a new release. I didn't get NFS Shift until last week.

the passing to out of bounds players still is there.. for some reason, when a guy cuts to the rim, he is out of bounds..

I've played about 5 games post-patch and seen it happen once. So its certainly better than it used to be.

I finally got this from Gamefly and have to say I am pretty underwhelmed.

There seems to be a delay when you press a button to when the action is performed, which is very annoying. Reminds me of the older versions of FIFA. You sometimes feel like you are wrestling with your controller. It doesn't seem as smooth and fluid as last year's version, which is puzzling?

Also, the AI stands around a lot and doesn't seem to run plays very often. And a lot of times, the guy with the ball will just stand there and dribble in place forever and sometimes the clock will run out. There also is a lot of bunching up of the players sometimes, like they don't know where to move to.

Since I just got the game, can anyone tell me what general tweaks I need to make out of the box? It seems like fouls are never called with default settings. I am also disappointed in the few camera choices. When compare to the myraid of cameras you have in 2K, you feel cheated.

Have you downloaded the patch? There are certain glitches in it, but it did improve gameplay, specifically some of the issues you're citing (like the dribble in place and jack it up). The other thing is the default rosters are a bit crappy, particularly for guys who played little last year like Arenas. If you can, try to find some rosters online if you don't want to spend $15 for dynamic dna, which would be a bit silly on a Gamefly rental.

As far as fouls, I've got charge/block, in-air and the shooting fouls up to around 75, and reach-in in the 60s (since EA didn't put numbers on their slider, just aim for about half-way between default and max for 75, and between default ad mid-point for reach -ins).

There is definitely a learning curve to figure out how Live plays - momentum is really important, which can make it seem like there is a greater delay than there should be. Your player has to gather himself in order to do anything except for catch and shoots.

I still really like it, but I think both games are pretty good these days.

If you're on PS3, I can see if I can figure out how to share rosters and sliders with you.

Thanks for the reply. You just brought up a good point. If I choose to "KEEP" my gamefly copy, do I have to pay for the DNA or will they send me the code with the game case?

That's a good question! I have no clue - might be worth dropping them an email.

Jack,

I'd also recommend giving cabrillo's sliders and roster edits at Operations Sports a try (takes about 15 minutes to edit -- EA wisely built in a function to do global edits per team -- would have been wiser to do global edits for all players at once, but hey, you take what you can get).

I'd avoided major slider tweaks except for fouls, and especially avoided roster edits, until two days ago when I finally gave up on fixing the few issues I couldn't solve with minor slider tweaks: namely high shooting percentages, out-of-wack rebounding, and the "herky jerky" thing.

I've had some really fun, rewarding games since then. With the roster edits (which I can't recommend highly enough), some of the manic panic feeling is removed from play in the paint and from guarding penetrating perimeter players. Things feel under control and smoother.

I haven't the had the problem with getting fouled, even previous to the patch, but the patch does seem to add a few more calls (to the point I had to drop my sliders a bit from pre-patch settings). It's crucial to start your attacks on the rim as early as 15' or 18' and hold turbo while doing the "layup solution" thing away from the rim and/or defensive player. I get 20-30 FT attempts a game. I attack the rim in transition and do my best to exploit switches and mismatches (which is probably a big "no sh__," but it actually works in this game, which is nice).

I guess it's not a perfect game, and some people are picking it to death, but it's one of the first basketball games I've ever played in which I actually feel some basketball knowledge and/or strategy is helpful and even necessary. I was subbing in offensive and defensive lineups down the stretch of a game last night, not just because I like to emulate real-life, etc., but because it feels necessary.

Good post.

It's also passing the variety test that most sports games, even good ones, struggle with. So far in my Bulls season:

-Won a defensive nail-biter at home against the Spurs

-Got absolutely clobbered on the road vs. Celts

-Won handily against the Heat on the road

-Beat badly by the Bucks at home.

I miss the presentation, graphics, and animations of NBA 2K, but this really plays a solid, fun game.

Yeah, I agree, I played two games last night in my Cavs season that could not have been more different. (PS3, All-Star level, default everything, 5 min. qtrs., no patch)

The first game I couldn’t keep up with Phoenix at all, they ran all over me, I lost by a score of something like 75-50. Every time I looked up Stoudemire was all alone under the basket dunking.

The second game was a slowed-down defensive struggle against Chicago which I won 42-41, with 18 of my points coming from the free-throw line. Very cool!

Yeah, All-Star's tough in this game. I wish all sports games would have more than four difficulty levels. On Pro I'd probably go 75-7 and be bored to death, but on All Star I'm having a tough time getting to .500, and probably won't even make the playoffs.

I like the difficulty in Live over 2K. 2K was either too easy or too hard without much of a middle ground. I'm playing on default All-Star with a few sliders tilted because I wasn't getting realistic numbers (offensive rebounds, steals, fouls), and I'm getting that good variety I mentioned earlier.

All-Star is very challenging, but pretty rewarding if you stick with it. I'm 3-5 with the Bulls, which basically seems about right (unfortunately).

I have been going back and forth between Live & 2K with the same teams matched up and I have found Live to be easier. I have a harder time on D with 2K than Live and its tougher to get stops. They both seem equal as far as my own offense goes.
