I'd also recommend giving cabrillo's sliders and roster edits at Operations Sports a try (takes about 15 minutes to edit -- EA wisely built in a function to do global edits per team -- would have been wiser to do global edits for all players at once, but hey, you take what you can get).
I'd avoided major slider tweaks except for fouls, and especially avoided roster edits, until two days ago when I finally gave up on fixing the few issues I couldn't solve with minor slider tweaks: namely high shooting percentages, out-of-wack rebounding, and the "herky jerky" thing.
I've had some really fun, rewarding games since then. With the roster edits (which I can't recommend highly enough), some of the manic panic feeling is removed from play in the paint and from guarding penetrating perimeter players. Things feel under control and smoother.
I haven't the had the problem with getting fouled, even previous to the patch, but the patch does seem to add a few more calls (to the point I had to drop my sliders a bit from pre-patch settings). It's crucial to start your attacks on the rim as early as 15' or 18' and hold turbo while doing the "layup solution" thing away from the rim and/or defensive player. I get 20-30 FT attempts a game. I attack the rim in transition and do my best to exploit switches and mismatches (which is probably a big "no sh__," but it actually works in this game, which is nice).
I guess it's not a perfect game, and some people are picking it to death, but it's one of the first basketball games I've ever played in which I actually feel some basketball knowledge and/or strategy is helpful and even necessary. I was subbing in offensive and defensive lineups down the stretch of a game last night, not just because I like to emulate real-life, etc., but because it feels necessary.
Good post.
It's also passing the variety test that most sports games, even good ones, struggle with. So far in my Bulls season:
-Won a defensive nail-biter at home against the Spurs
-Got absolutely clobbered on the road vs. Celts
-Won handily against the Heat on the road
-Beat badly by the Bucks at home.
I miss the presentation, graphics, and animations of NBA 2K, but this really plays a solid, fun game.
