Free Game from SimBin coming for the PC.

Volvo the game

http://www.simbin.se/games/volvogame.htm

he fresh and exiting Volvo S60 Concept headlines the car line up and will be accompanied by several well known Volvo race cars. The players will be able to hammer this variety of Volvo cars around two highly detailed and realistic tracks.

As in all games developed by SimBin this game will deliver a great experience in sound and detail with a fun and challenging game as a cherry on the cake. The game comes with three difficulty levels to appeal to a broad audience, from new comer to the experienced gamer.

The racing game announced in April by Volvo Cars and game development company SimBin can be played with five racing legends in addition to the new Volvo S60 Concept. They are Volvo models that many people will remember from the STCC and BTCC racing series.

Players will be able to choose between the Volvo C30 which is competing in this year's STCC ( Swedish Touring Car Championship), the STCC Volvo S60 that participated a few years ago, the Volvo S40 that participated with notable success in the BTCC (the British Touring Car Championship) the Volvo 850, the estate car that became a legend in the BTCC, and finally a true racing classic, the iconic Volvo 240 Turbo Group A.

There is a choice of two tracks: Gothenburg Eco Drive Arena in Göteborg, Sweden, and Chayaka outside Kiev in the Ukraine. Volvo - The Game is the only virtual racing game in the world to include this Ukrainian track.

The game offers a choice of skill levels: "novice with all the driver assistance technology activated such as ABS brakes, "semi-pro", and finally "pro" where there is no assistance whatsoever.

Footnote: Volvo - The Game can be downloaded free of charge to your own PC starting on May 26. Go to the Volvo Cars website, www.volvocars.com/intl The game is available in English, German, French, Italian and Spanish.

IGN have posted a hands-on article about the F1 game coming later in the year for the Wii. Lots of useful impressions in the article.

http://wii.ign.com/articles/985/985404p1.html

So far the game looks like it may be really good. Interestingly, the previewer says that the classic controller offers the best control due to its shoulder buttons. I'm glad to see Codies making use of the classic controller for this game for people who do not want to go the route of the wiimote/wheel.

Fellas:

This should come as no surprise, but I have Indy fever after working the race on site for three weeks.

If anyone wants to run the IndyCar Series 2009 mod from rFactor at Indy some night, let me know! :)

Thanks,
PK

I was waiting for you. I have a server ready to go. I could do tonight, tomorrow, or Thursday night at 10:30pm EDT. I will go ahead and setup the server tonight regardless of which night we go with so that folks can test it out since it has been awhile since my servers were up.

Cool! I may jump in after the hockey game tonight and turn a few laps.

Thanks, Don.

Time to write some more begging letters, I suppose?

"Dear Dietrich,

I've been a loyal user of your fabulous energy drink since I first started racing online at stupid hours of the morning, and feel that in line with your company's previous efforts to promote young talent, a Red Bull Online Driver Search would be an ideal way to further promote your products while extending your already brilliant involvement in motorsport.

Please let me know if you'd like to discuss this idea further with me. As the man behind it, I would naturally be delighted to act as an ambassador for your utterly wonderful brand, requesting only that I have parity on equipment - if I find out Tonio's Jagerbull is running 6 degrees cooler than mine, someone's head is gonna roll. You may, of course, send my free drinks to my home address."

Whichever night people want to run, and if I have to buy my own wakey-wakey juice for now, I'll make sure I'm there.

Another Wii hands-on take, this time from Eurogamer:

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/f1-2009-hands-on

They say there is a great sense of speed and that KERS will be modeled somehow. From reading the article, it looks as if Codies are trying to implement a lot of the little details into the game. The main downside at this point is, you guessed it, graphics.

I'm far from a graphics' whore, but the graphics in those screens at the Eurogamer preview are horrific. Those are PSX-quality graphics.

As has been highlighted in the comments thread, the screenshots feature Jarno Trulli's move to Force India and McLaren's new commitment to entering at least 4 cars every race, so I guess these shots are from the very early stages of development. I would certainly hope so, since they're "don't stare, children!" ugly.

Having said that, if the graphics were my main concern I wouldn't still be playing Ayrton Senna's Super Monaco GP II. The preview says very little about how it plays at this stage but what's there sounds interesting.

I've read elsewhere that when told of the team's wish to have proper race engineers doing voices, Rob Smedley was bang up for it, and given that Codies have already released one game, GRID, that said my name repeatedly...nothing in my gaming life to date could top "Adam, baby, stay cool!"

This $1 pedal mod is the most effective tweak I've ever tried for any gaming peripheral:

Image

Image

This simple mod has absolutely transformed the performance of my DFP brake pedal. It feels like a real pedal now, with much more progressive feel that allows me to brake deeper into corners without lockup. You still get full travel but with much firmer feel.

I used a sponge trainer lacrosse ball that my kids don't need anymore since they've graduated to playing with a regulation hard ball.

This mod has made iRacing a damn dream for me. I've really had a change of heart regarding iRacing, as the proverbial Red Sea has parted and I now "get it" when it comes to the racing league setup. More on that in separate post.

Try this mod if you have a DFP or DFGT and want more realistic brakes!

PK

Yeah, I did a similar Squash ball mod for my now very aging Red Logitech Momo that gave good results.

Sweet, let me know when you want to try to meet up and race, although my guess is that you are already well beyond my class level. :)

No, I'm still at Rookie 3.04. I just started last week, and I haven't been racing a ton. But I'm really enjoying it.

I'm racing under a different name, though -- Dan Skiver. He's a buddy at IMS who received a complimentary subscription but doesn't sim race, so he gave it to me. I can't change the name.

I tried iRacing again too, they hooked me with the 3 months for $25.00 promotion. I am really enjoying it this time around. The cost of moving up is still too high, but I'm having a great time in the Legends and Spec Racer Ford. Let's do some racing, look me up Patrick Wood.

Yep, the Legends car is an absolute hoot. I practiced the other night at Lanier and ran side-by-side, inside-out with a guy for about 20 consecutive laps of oval delight. It was the best oval racing I've ever enjoyed with a stranger in sim racing, hands down.

Gurantsu wrote:3 months for $25 isn't bad. Whats the sub price after that?
$19 per month on monthly plan (includes $2.50 iRacing credit)
$50 for three months (includes $10 iRacing credit)
$90 for six months (includes $25 iRacing credit)
$156 for a year (includes $60 iRacing credit)

If you're disciplined enough, that $60 iRacing credit after the annual plan will make your next year's dues only $96, or $8 per month. But iRacing isn't stupid: They know you'll burn that iRacing credit on new cars and classes.

After giving iRacing an extended test drive, I think it just might be worth the subscription price if you're serious about sim racing and do it frequently. If you race just one night per week, probably not. But three or four nights? Definitely, as this is the best sim out there by a decent margin, especially when you consider the quality of the opponents and how respectful they are on track.

You will become a better sim racing by running iRacing -- it's that simple. The opposition is so good and so clean that it forces you to improve your skills in driving and racecraft. But I still have found that I can finish mid-pack to lower-midpack in some Rookie races. I'm not totally out of my depth.

The pricing of add-on tracks and cars is where iRacing's price scheme still seems excessive -- $20 for each new class and track. This isn't like cable TV, where you pay a basic subscription and can get good programming without buying premium channels like HBO. If you want to race in certain leagues in iRacing once your license level increases, you must have certain tracks and cars. And you must buy those.

It's blackmail, and iRacing knows it. But it's also addictive as hell, and iRacing knows that, too!

Luckily, a lot of the basic cars, such as the Solstice, Legends and Skip Barber car are very fun. And the Formula Star Mazda is the most enjoyable open-wheel car I've ever driven in any sim. It just feels perfect to drive, and you need to really squeeze every ounce out of the car to find the limit. So much fun.

More detailed iRacing impressions later.

Take care,
PK

Just did the same, man. It feels weird for me to race under an alias, but I'll do what's needed to continue to be a cheap bastard! :)
