That's part of the beauty of this game. The Merc's simply can't cover all of the ground. And I'd be hard pressed to find a 'best' spot....It all depends on the tactics of the spies. Maybe one spot grants you a nice reaction time to two entries, say. Fine. What happens when BOTH spies come in from entry number 4?

It is really a living, breathing game in that way. You'll see one side seemingly develop an advantage, only to see the other side discover a weakness and then get an advantage of their own. So on, and so forth.

I think that is where you see a distiction between SC and the other Clancy games. In GR:IT and R6, there is or can be a best 'tactic' or way to approach each map. In SC you must be more fluid, reacting to the way your opponent plays.

I still think there are some relative newbies here on DSP you can play with, no?

Web is right, that is the beauty of this game. PERFECT balance created by the developers in both map design and Spy vs. Merc design!!!

Go ahead and try to cover four entry points as a Merc. There is only two of you, so that leaves two unattended. Okay, so mine the hell out of the unattended ones, ooops, Spies saw you mines and have disabled them. If I had a dime for every time I thought I had one section securely covered, only to have a Spy neutralize a ND133 right below my nose…

PK:

Don't be too discouraged after 2 rounds of revenge mode. I think Web is right that playing with others of your level would be a good idea, since everyone will be clueless.

It took me a good while to get used to 'living in the shadows.' That is, for the longest time, I would run around as a spy in the hallways, use the main doors, and generally exist in the terrain the mercs use to travel. But, once I understood the maps a little better and realized a lot of areas have ducts, or drop ceilings, or other places spies can go but mercs cannot, it became much easire to move around undetected.

I noticed a couple times last night, when I was dead, that you would line up your weapon and fire away as if it were a shooter. I did the same thing at the start as well. Eventually, you will get used to the physical sttributes of the spy, i.e. fast as crap (can litteraly run circles around the mercs), can jump and climb, has the 2 'quick use' L and R trigger grenades (defaults set to flash and chaff) which are extrememly useful for close combat.

One key thing is that it's usually better for a spy to just try to get away, run and escape or hide, rather than try to fight. It took me a while to get this through my head, but it is key. And mostly I learned it from being a merc, and realizing how slow and lumbering and half blind the mercs are.

I dunno, I can understand you had zero fun last night, and it's mostly my fault. You certainly shouldn't apologize to US, as we were just trying to show you the fun in the game, and didn't do a good job at all.

If you hook up with other inexperienced players, you will surely have a lot more fun while you learn the game and the maps, and soon enough you will be comfortable what is going on.

Just don't give up just yet!

Also, now they are telling me Thrusday for TOCA. GRRRRRRRRR. Lemme know how awesome it is!

Thanks for the tips, Zeppo. I'm not giving up on PT yet.

Any other PT online newbies from DSP want to play sometime?

Thanks,
PK

pk,

I'm not a newbie, but I'm barely level 2. I played a lot for about a week, but I've been immersed in WE7 since then. I'd be happy to play with ya. I think I can probably give you a few pointers, but I still stink bad enough that we'd be fairly evenly matched. And I only know a few of the maps well.

FWIW, I almost NEVER use my weapon as a spy anymore. Grenades and punches are as effective, and they also prompt me to get the hell out of dodge...which is what I should be doing.
