Analyst - PS3 price cut to be announced within “days”

Post by bdoughty »

Janco’s Mike Hickey has speculated that Sony may be on the verge of announcing a hefty PS3 price cut.

“Recent channel checks indicate increased speculation for a PS3 price cut announcement from Sony in the next couple of days,” said the analyst.

“We think the company needs to reduce the current price by USD 100 to effectively restart unit velocity at retail. We believe the market is expecting a PS3 price cut in April or by June at the latest.

Unit velocity?

He also adds that they are working on a version that does not have blue-ray.

SCEA says nope.

Really should have read the second link first before posting. This guy might be a touch nuts.

As if Sony hasn't lost enough money on its over-priced, over-engineered doorstop, they are going to cut $100 ?

If it wasn't for MLB 09, mine would be on e-Bay right now...there's nothing in the library that's exclusive which tempts me in the slightest.

Come on, now: The U.S. Federal government is spending WAY more than it earns to play the White Knight and rescue everyone from the decession. So Sony is just following suit ... :)

Take care,

Totally agree Dave. I believe the USF1 team will be on next years starting grid before Sony drops the price by $100. :)

Not saying this guy might not be right but I have to ask.

Do video game industry analysts and weather men go to the same school for training?

I actually thing VG analyst is an easier job, you don't really need to know anything just make some predictions once in a while, no one cares if you're right or not.

Who pays these guys? Is it good money? I might need to consider a career change. :)

They should make it $200. That's good price for a blu-ray player.

I knew better than to reply in the first place. Hey, I agree that they desperately need to lower the price so more consumers can afford one. $299 is a good price point for the PS3 IMO.

However, from reading recent reports about how poorly Sony is doing, does it make fiscal sense for them to do so? They're going to lose a ton if and when they lower the price.

You say it's overpriced, yet you rant about Sony announcing a price cut?

If you need a second PlayStation 3 for your game room because your first PlayStation 3 is in your non-game room...you might be a video game addict :D

If you read the post carefully, you may just identify that Sony have already lost an absolute fortune on this particular machine. In the light of that, it would appear somewhat strange, from the point of view of, say, an investor, that they would seek to compound this by further cutting the income per unit. The only way in which a similar cut in the cost of the unit could be effected would be, I believe, to remove the Blu-Ray drive and replace it with a normal drive - which would, however, render most of the current library unplayable. It is debatable, in the midst of a recession, whether such a cut would generate sufficient sales to offset the negative impact on margin, given that the PS3 has a relatively small number of exclusive games to make people want to buy a PS3 if they already have another console....and certainly in the UK and Europe, the functionality as a Blu-Ray player does not appear to serve as a massive inducement to be buying one.

Sport's post also is somewhat surprising, as I clearly said that there was nothing to tempt me other than one particular game. One game is easy enough to hold off on purchasing.

The woman in front of me at Best Buy on Sunday attempted to buy a 160 GB PS3, but her card didn't have $500 on it so she just said sorry to the teller and walked off.

If a markdown happens before April, Sony is clearly throwing their fiscal year away.

Citing an EB Games clerk as the source? That's beyond weak.

"Hey, the guy who drives the truck at my local beer distributorship told me the other day while stocking my local supermarket that Bud is cutting its price for a six-pack by $2 nationwide ... "

:)

Take care,

I dunno. If they have it for 400, that prices some people out. Wouldn't they rather sell one for 300 to someone, than not sell one to that person at all? The more units they move, the more games they sell.

I'd be very, very tempted to pick up a PS3 if the price drops to $300.

At $399, it's not even an option for me.

They could totally drop the price by $100 as they will make that back when you go to buy a 2nd controller with rumble in it.
