Every now and then we should mention an older album that is worthy of some new recognition or one that we are really enjoying and want to share.
I wound up listening to Graham Parker last year for the first time, particular Squeezing Out Sparks, where he out-Costello's Elvis Costello. Terrific songwriter who wraps together clever lyrics and great melodies.

I also checked out another famous Gram, Gram Parsons, the original alt-country guy. G.P. and Grievous Angel are full of twang and melancholoy that tend to characterize the best country music. I might have to go back and check out The Flying Burrito Brothers now.
Do it. I lost my mind a few years ago following the whole Byrds/Burrito/GP world(albums, books, movies, Gram-fest, etc....). Completely worth it. I'm a big geek over all this stuff so if u need any suggestions, let me know. For the Flying Burrito Bros, start with the recent Rhino compilations & go from there. All kick-ass stuff.

Oh, & have a glass of bourbon nearby at all times...

If you haven't seen it yet, pitchforktv is running the (awesome) Joy Division documentary for 'one week only':

The best thing is all the live footage. Their albums aren't a good measuring post for what they actually sounded like; fierce, powerful, energetic.

Great point.

The film mostly shows just Live snippets, but find full versions of nearly all them on youtube.

My favorite of all time, talk about a way to kickoff a set:

Combining the "Old Music" and "Beard" music topics, I'd highly recommend the recently re-issued Cat Stevens' classics, Tea for the Tillerman and/or Teaser and the Firecat, both of which are now available with some bonus cuts. For my money, in the bearded singer/songwriter category, no one did it better than Cat Stevens on those 2 classic albums.

Good call - try getting hold of 'Still' or the 'Les Baines Douches' bootleg album for live sound. Their studio albums were suffocatingly over-produced by Martin 'Zero' Hannett, and the band were less than happy with the results.

Anyone bought into the smattering of hype/backlash over the Gaslight Anthem? I picked up their latest, "The '59 Sound" and really enjoy it. Kind of Springsteen meets the Replacements in my mind. They're playing here in Minneapolis in April and I'll be checking them out live.
The sing-along songs'll be our scriptures.

They also added live sets to the Deluxe Reissues of the studio albums from last year. Sizzling additions, though Les Baines Douches is still the go-to for my JD listening. Preston Warehouse isn't a bad document either.

For those looking for a modern day Santana look no further than the Omar Rodriguez-Lopez Quintet's "Apocalypse Inside of an Orange" album. Roll a fattie, kick back, and listen to the 18-minute long epic "Jacob Van Lennepkade II." You'll be glad you did.

Since I think its silly to start an old music thread, I just wanted to share something that raised my ire: someone dear to me bad-mouthed The Cult's Electric. I can't imagine a world where this isn't universally loved - Duffy's riffs are great, Astbury is in fine voice, and Rick Rubin's production is spot on. It is the best AC/DC album of the 80's after Back In Black. Who could deny this?

Tis a great album, but not sure if I'd call it the best AC/DC album...

I think it's an uneven album. Don't get me wrong, I loved it back in the day and saw them open for Billy Idol on the Electric tour. The highs are incredibly high: "Love Removal Machine," "Wild Flower," and "Lil' Devil" are three of the best AC/DC songs not recorded by AC/DC. Some of the overlooked songs like "Peace Dog" and ""King Contrary Man" also rock pretty hard. But the "Born to Be Wild" cover is boring and "plastic fantastic lobster telephone" from "Aphrodisiac Jacket" is one of the most cringe-worthy lyrics from an otherwise good album.

It's hard to compare this album to Love, but I think that overall album is stronger, even if I like the production on Electric a lot better.

I also dig the Manor Sessions version of Electric they released years ago. The Rick Rubin production is definitely better, but their original efforts were pretty interesting.

I did too! Quite a pairing. I'd actually compare this with Rebel Yell; great singles, some good deep cuts and a dud or two. In other words, classic albums. Both are unfairly maligned in this day and age.

Astbury's lyrics are always embarrassing; he's the hard rock Sammy Davis, adding "yeah" and "baby" to sub-Doorsian hoodoo (shame Sammy never got to do a lounge version of "Lil' Devil." It would have killed, like Steve & Edie's "Black Hole Sun"). "Aphrodisiac Jacket" is incomprehensible dribble, but it sounds great when he sings it; a nice bridge between the harder edged stuff and their previous sound. "Born To Be Wild" is just s***, but one total turd doesn't diminish an album filled with greatness.

I completely agree; Love is one of my favorites, period. But Electric is more fun. Big dumb rock. Great driving music.

Target had this for $10, so I picked it up and am really digging it. Some of the reviews give them a hard time for not picking a style and sticking with it, but I love the variety of the songs. They can go from coffee house to disco floor in the blink of an eye. Good recommendation, PK.

Are the Foo Fighters new?...Do Concert videos count?

I just picked up their concert at Wembly 08 on Blu ray.

Awesome!....They even do a Zeppelin song with Page and Jones. Grohl on drums and Hawkins singing. Pretty cool I thought.

As someone who has always been solidly in the 'electronic/indie' camp since he first started collecting records in 1980, I would have to admit that The Cult are my guilty pleasure.

There, I've said it, it's out in the open, let's move on...

I think they ran part of that concert on HDNet. The video quality was amazing.

I also bought The Who's Live at Kilburn on Blu Ray. It's the infamous concert where The Who hadn't played together for a year, then had a concert filmed for The Kids Are Alright documentary. Moon was so bloated and out of shape from boozing and drugs that he had a hard time playing, and they wound up scrapping that footage and filming another gig six months later.

I found the show to be pretty good. Moon is sloppy but still Moon -- even on a bad day, he was great. Townshend absolutely kills, and Daltrey and Entwhistle are also in fine form. The video and sound quality is great, and they include another concert from 1969, around the time of Live at Leeds. The video quality of that show isn't great (it's 16mm) but still, it's awesome to see them when they really were the best live band in the world.

Guess who started following my personal account tonight on Twitter, and I have no idea why?

Pete Yorn, the singer-songwriter who had a few mild pop/alternative hits a few years back.

I wasn't following him; I have no idea why he's following me. But what the hell -- I'm following him now!

Take care,
PK

My favorite artist, Robyn Hitchcock, released a new album this week, Goodnight Oslo. Probably his best work since early/mid-nineties. 10 songs in 40 minutes is a welcome change.

However, good as that album is, my favorite album of '09 at this point is Willie Nelson and Asleep At The Wheel's Willie and the Wheel. Just a stellar party of an album with Willie revisiting the Texas Swing he played in his youth. Pure fun.
