Donovan on 10-day 'training' trip with Bayern, presumably invited by his SoCal buddy Klinsmann.

Image

Would love to see this happen. Bayern should use as I always use him on my PES ML team; super-sub and spot starter at forward, wide-midfield, and attacking midfield. :)

Bayern has no need for a player that disappears in big games. We already have Podolski for that and Hergraves before that.

That's great since the US is about the only place he shows up

The idea is that Donovan would only come in the event that Podolski leaves, so no worries there!

Donovan doesn't always choke in big games. In the single biggest game of his career, the WC quarterfinal in '02 against Germany, he was arguably the best player on the field for either team. Granted that was 6+ years ago. We'll see what happens.

Oliver Kahn was the best on the field that day. Please.

Indeed. Considering he was able to conjure up a third arm in a critical moment, one that was only apparently attached to Torsten Frings (only apparently), certainly set him a class above the rest that day. :P :P Friedel only had two arms to work with inside his own box.

Beat the Scots eh ? That must get the cheating cokehead dwarf at least into the 400 million name initial shortlist for 'World Manager of the Year'.

Donovan loan deal reached; http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/feedarticle/8050129

In the last month or so Donovan has said he wasn't interested in a loan, but alas here we are.
"The goal will be to see if we can get him long term, at least until the end of the season," Klinsmann told the club's website (www.fcbayern.de).
I bet MLS isn't too eager to sell him, and MLS and Bayern will re-evaluate his transfer value in March and take it from there.

Also, a great babelfish translation of Klinsmann on what Donovan brings to the team;
Donovan convinced from the first day on, got Klinsmann straight. “The players were very done by him. Landon gives us a component in the attack, which we did not have up to now. It is unbelievable fast and looks for permanently unity counter unity situations. That makes our attack more with difficulty out computingable. He is completely different Stürmer than those, which we have now already.”

:) 1986 is still close to you eh? Listen, if Mr cokehead can turn this bunch of underachievers and start treating the WC qualifiers more seriously, then I could care less if he's short, fat and sniffs here and there. When you have people like Riquelme, Tevez, Messi, Aguero and you're struggling with nations like Uruguay, Peru, and the surprising Paraguay, you gotta change something. A little hand of God would help.

LMAO

I'd like to take credit myself, but Macca suggested the brilliant idea that Maradona's reign as manager should be turned into a reality show.

I was more thinking of all those people he cheated when he helped throw the 1988 Serie A title....although they were Napoli fans, so my ire is a little lessened.

Didn't get to watch it until last night as it was not shown here. Pretty crap match from the Germans. However, that is why we love them. They'll putter along during these next 18 months and then when South Africa hits, they'll be able in the semis while England get slaughtered by the Tabloids again.

Well here I am n LA for the Final, suckers! :P Should be a fun time, but I have to say these no-tailgate rules out here are weird. We'll see. Supposedly my seats are pretty low, so if you look for me I'll be the guy in the Metro jersey and the Redskins hat.

We have no business being here, so it's all gravy. Still, as it's our first final of any kind ever, I couldn't miss it.

Solid victory for the Crew Zeppo. Must have been a big celebration afterwards:) I had completely forgotten that the MLS Cup was today until I happened upon it while channel surfing between NFL games. It's interesting how much more unorganized the MLS games are compared with their european counterparts. Is that just the style of soccer the US plays? Am I imagining things? Wish I had the time to watch more of their games...

MLS is more kickball than football.

Plus the whole Americanization of MLS is not helping things. The conferences and playoff structure has got to go. As well as the league lasting as long as baseball.

If the MLS wants to go the next level it has to make itself more like the world model.

Sorry JRod, but this one always touches a nerve with me. People talk as if following the European model is some kind of magical elixir for good soccer. I have trouble seeing it being anything but a disaster for MLS.

The system works great for Europe with their history and culture, but make little sense for America. First off, in Europe, most league spots mean something, as the top teams fight for the title, the second best teams fight for spots in Europe, and the worst teams fight off relegation.

If MLS just scrapped the playoffs without a meaningful champs league alternative and no relegation, by the halfway point of the season, half of the league would have absolutely nothing to play for in the 2nd half because they would be out of the championship fight.

So just add relegation? Good luck finding investors who are willing to risk that their investment might become essentially worthless after a season or two playing in front of <1k people in USL-1 or USL-2.

Play in the winter is another common refrain. So then we can compete with the NHL, NBA and NFL for sports air time? Not too mention we'd probably need something like the Bundesliga's 6-week break. Good luck selling American fans on the concept of the big mid-season break.

The European model works all well and good when you already have millions of fanatical supporters in towns across the country, but could be completely disastrous for MLS. Quality pro soccer is made by one driving factor--$$$$. If there is fan interest in the sport, the money will be there no matter what the system, and vice versa.
