OT: Playoff baseball

That weather was horrible. I stepped outside, and man, 40, windy, rainy is just horrible weather for any sport...but baseball shouldn't be played in that....they should have postponed it after 4. And even then, it was pretty clear around game time, looking at the weather, that the game probably wasn't going to be finished. They could have just postponed it and had a full game either today or (maybe better tomorrow).
Today the weather may be worse than yesterday...right now there's less rain, but more wind. I hope they postpone it until tomorrow.
Naples, how was the crowd? Were the concourses a mass of cold, drunk Philly fans? I feel for the people who paid a grand or more to sit in the cold, see crappy baseball, then have to come back to the stadium tonight and (possibly) go through the exact same thing.

The crowd was trying their best, but it was tough. The mood seemed more of disbelief than drunken rowdiness or anger. Everyone was ready for this to be "the night", yet instead we got one of the most bizarre World Series games ever.
I was thinking the same thing about seat sales. Word is that seats in my section were starting at $5,000 per online. If I had a time machine I know what I'd do with that seat now...

Selig has said that he wants to shorten the playoffs by a few days. Not much of a difference in terms of whether though.JackB1 wrote:Baseball and cold weather just don't mix well. Maybe they should shorten up the schedue...put all the doubleheaders back in and try and get done by early Sept?
Don't forget about Seattle's roof!
Just wait until you try playing a game in late October in Minnesota at their new, open-air stadium. Brrrr.JackB1 wrote:Baseball and cold weather just don't mix well. I dont know what the solution is, but this happens whenever a eastern team is in the series. Imagine if Seattle ever gets in

Talk about an anticlimatic way to end the season and especially World Series should the Phillies win tomorrow night! Continuing a game a day and half later in the sixth inning. I wonder what the ratings will be.
Hopefully, this will force baseball to make a change. Play a twinight double header once a month and end the regular season earlier!

I think everyone's overreacting. The weather's hit-or-miss this time of the year in alot of places. For example, since you brought up Minnesota, in Minneapolis today it's 47 and partly cloudy, they'd be able to play. It's supposed to be 65 on Thursday in Minneapolis. What's wrong with Minnesota in October?Naples39 wrote: Just wait until you try playing a game in late October in Minnesota at their new, open-air stadium. Brrrr.
So what if if they have to wait a day or two? We should rearrange the playoff format for years to come or crucify Selig because of one cold front going through at the wrong time?
It snowed at one of the World Series games I was at back in the 90s. I don't remember all this whining. Of course, a few flurries are easier to play through than that slop last night, but still, it seems like alot of overreacting to me.

I think this might actually help the ratings. Might be the first time in a long time alot of people in the east who normally wouldn't stay up that late are still awake at the end of a World Series game, especially kids.sportdan30 wrote: Continuing a game a day and half later in the sixth inning. Well, that and the fact that most people cannot stand to watch baseball...if they only have 3 1/2 innings to watch, they may actually do it.lexbur wrote:I think this might actually help the ratings. How do you figure Bud mismanaged anything? Even if the plan was to go 9 from the start, how would Bud get that implemented. This is not the way the rule is written. If a game is called it is over by rule. Could Bud even has extended the game if he wanted to? Maybe by the "best interest in baseball" clause. Can the commish change rules on the fly if he wants to? If so, I didn't know that.Naples39 wrote:Umm, read my post above.dbdynsty25 wrote:How can you be angry Naples? You really would have wanted to win the world series in a rain shortened game?
Selig completely mismanaged the game. Decreeing that the game would go 9, then not telling anybody about it. Then letting them play for about an hour in terrible conditions that should've never happened.
First, if the plan was to go 9 from the start, the policy should've been clear to each team. This clearly was not the case. Second, if he was always willing to suspend the game, what the hell took so long? Playing the 6th and most of the 5th was an indefensible decision if he had already decided suspending the game was an option.
Selig's indecisiveness and lack of leadership essentially flushed 2 innings of World Series baseball down the toilet and kept the dedicated Phillies fans who were willing to stick it out cold and miserable for over an hour for no good reason.

When the Phillies won someone unfurled a sign that said "Mitch you're off the hook."fanatic wrote:Congrats...The Phillies deserved it. I bet Mitch Williams is sleeping a bit better tonight!
Twas a good time tonight at the ballpark, and I checked out the scene on broad street as I live only a few blocks from there. Pretty crazy.
Hopefully I'll be able to post some pictures at some point.
Mitch Williams was there last night. He's an analyst for CSN Philly (Ricky Botallico as well), and he was interviewing players on the field after the game. Mitch is actually loved by Phillies fans these days, and his analysis is usually spot-on.
He actually talked on-air about that sign Naples just mentioned.
