OT: Vick Indicted

Goodell will be known as the commish that brought down the hammer on this kind of stuff, and it's about time. Baseball and Basketball should follow. Under Tagliabue, he would have probably just gotten a 4 game suspension and be back playing. Same with Pacman, under the old regime, there would be no way he would get a full year ban.

But in the case of Vick, i don't think Goodell will ban him for life. He knows Vick still draws crowds so probably a year ban will go down.

I don't think he'll ban him for life either. I think Vick is probably working with his attorneys and PR people on rehabilitating his image. If he's contrite and says and does the right things most people would be willing to give him a second chance.

Huizenga rejects rebuilding talk
Dolphins owner Wayne Huizenga wants 'to make the playoffs this year.' He also refused to rule out letting Ricky Williams and Michael Vick play for the team.

"Huizenga did not close the door on the possibility that Vick might play for the Dolphins if and when his current legal and league problems are resolved. Vick faces a prison term and a suspension from the NFL following his expected guilty plea related to dogfighting charges."

Anyone see the 2-hour special on the National Geographic Channel this past weekend called "Dogtown: Saving the Michael Vick Dogs"?

Wow, it was really fascinating, seeing how far some of those dogs have come at this animal sanctuary in Utah, from how they were emotionally and physically when they were first rescued from Vick's kennels to to see how they are now, the progress they've made is incredible, getting a second chance at life.

And the best part is, Vick himself is footing the bill for most of this work through his fines while he rots in prison.

They're replaying it Friday the 12th at 5 pm if you want to set your DVRs.

It is great to see these dogs get a new lease on life. There was another similar special on the Animal Planet last week that focused more on the dogs from the start of the indictment to current time. It's amazing how forgiving of humans some of these dogs are after all they have been through. It also showed how these dogs are basically fighting because of their desire to do what their owners want...not because they want to fight.

There was even one dog that is now a therapy dog, visiting old age homes and putting smiles on the faces of elderly people who have so little to look forward to. Anyone who thinks pit bulls are to blame for attacks on people really should watch these shows. They are extremely misunderstood.

Maybe I'll ask the woman in our office who was attacked by a pit bull last week while camping what she thinks. It was totally unprovoked as she was just walking down a trail and had no idea it was coming until she found herself on the ground after the dog attacked her leg from behind and knocked her down. It was going for her neck and bit her again in the wrist, but thank God her husband was able to pull the dog off.

I've started to ride a bike this summer and now I hate dogs more than ever. What's the best weapon to protect myself while riding?

Jack, why is it that almost every dog attack story you hear about involves a pit bull? I know the media can enhance this impression by only going with certain stories, but even from personal experience (like the one Leebo mentioned) it seems pit bulls are more likely to attack someone than any other breed of dog.

Halt! pepper spray. You can get it at most bike shops or online from Bike Nashbar or Performance Bike. It's the same stuff postal carriers use.

My canister is attached to my saddle bag, within easy reach. And I don't hesitate for one second to plaster a pooch's corneas if that dog comes flying toward me outside of its property, barking with gums bared. I've been attacked and bitten enough times to know the difference between playful pooch, harmless turf defender and piece of sh*t that wants a calf or Achilles' tendon sandwich.

Back in the old days, some riders used to take full-length frame pumps and use them as billy clubs against attacking dogs. But now everyone uses either mini-pumps or CO2 cartridge inflation systems, so the old "frame pump as a night stick" doesn't work anymore.

I've also read where some riders fill one of their bottles with an ammonia-water solution to spray at dogs. But I'd be too afraid that I'd reach for the dog bottle while fatigued near the end of a ride and drink that eye-burning piss.

She didn't provoke the attack, but the dog was predisposed to attack her or anyone else. There is no way to know why this particular dog attacked without more info, but that dog was probably trained to be aggressive by it's owner. Pit bulls and all other dogs, aren't naturally aggressive towards people. Human beings can be equally as aggressive and attack and kill, but this behavior is never without cause or reason. Similar with dogs. People and/or dogs act out for a reason 99% of the time. The problem is, there are dogs out there that are already "ruined" by their owners and you have no way of knowing this.

As far as your last question, I would just google "dog protection biking".
I have no idea, but I would think being on a moving bicycle, you would be fairly safe. Much more so than walking.

Any dog can attack regardless of breed. The main difference is that when a pit bull does attack, it's usually more 'successful' than other breeds. There are other breeds that, by nature, are more aggressive, but when a cocker spaniel "attacks", you can shake it off and move on.

A a well raised pit bull, in a gentle environment, is no more dangerous than any other large breed. Don't forget, because of their "rep" a lot of shitheads get pit bulls because they wanna be 'all bad ass', hence the dog being raised as such. The 'hoods' in LA are overrun with pit bulls being raised by gangsta's...

The media does get nutty when it comes to pit bulls. Last year, a woman in my hood was attacked by a black lab & it never made the paper. Now just imagine if it was a pit bull...

It's because the pit bull has the strength and size and unbelievable jaw strength to potentially do the most damage. They are also very often trained to be aggressive for fighting or protection or status symbol dogs. It all adds up to lots of dangerous dogs out there with the potential to attack. The pit bull ancestory comes from terriers and bulldogs, which are already a very tenacious and strong willed and also obedient dog to begin with. Put all these ingredients in the wrong hands and the outcome won't be good.

I have ZERO sympathy for Vick. Many of my co-workers think he was "scape-goated" or "witch-hunted" but I completely disagree. He NEVER showed me any remorse for what he did and to me, that is the key. I can forgive anyone that sees the harm in what they did and wants to make ammends, but Vick never showed me that. He lied and denied from the getgo and only admited guilt when he had to.

He deserves everything he gets.

Agree Jack. That's very disturbing. What NFL team in their right mind is going to give Vick another chance? What a PR nightmare it would be. As a fan, I could never root for him again.

Yeah, I'd like to know where they came from. You hear horror stories about dog fighters stealing harmless dogs like Pugs to serve as target practice for their pit bulls, but I think it's more likely that Vick and his buddies would have just rounded up some strays.
