Aye, but 'twas too little too late. I'll remember for next time, though.

England 1 Croatia 2

Shots 14(6), 14(6)
FK 5, 0
Corners 0,0
Posses 46, 54

Yellow Card: Tudor

Owen (16')

Kumulanic (30'), Prko (69')

An evenly fought match between England and a desperate Croatia side saw the visitors squeeze through with a narrow victory. The 3 Lions jumped ahead in the early going, as the Croatian keeper foolishly palmed aside a shot that looked headed for the side netting. The English capitalized off of the ensuing CK, as Beckham's perfectly weighted offeringt was headed home with authority by Michael Owen.

The Croats rallied and created a number of chances down the stretch in the first half, but saw a series of good chances go begging. Their efforts finally paid off in the 30th minute as Balaman's incisive through ball found a streaking Kumulanic, who beat the keeper with a surgical poke. The sides traded chances until Croatia found the winner through Dado Prso (errr, Prko). A scrum in front of goal somehow ended with the ball at Prko's feet about 10 yards out, and the Rangers forward knew what to do from there.

Good game, LS. Definitely could've gone the other way, and I thought you had that equalizer at the death with Owen's header off of Cole's cross. Good luck down the road.

Thanks Slumber. Actually it's pretty much both - I'm using a template from my FIFA '98 tournament from nearly ten years ago, modified for WE. I'm stll not real happy with the format and will continue to tweak.

Guys, In order to maintain the suspense of who is going to make it out of group stage, please do not play more than two matches until Sunday, February 18. That date also happens to be the deadline for everyone to have played one match.

Good old USA 3, Argentina 0. Jared just controlled this game. The midfileders were very quick and any time my players tried to build something, the US team was on top. Two goals from E. Jones (39' and 58' minutes) and an auto fluky goal by N. Burdisso set my fate.

Zeppo, I tried to break Donovan's legs, but he was rather a non factor in the game.

3:3 fk
4:0 ck
3(0):3(1) fouls(offsides)

Good game 10spro. A few of the breaks went my way that match (the own goal, and the shot deflected off the keepers hands). Good luck w/the rest of the tourney and the league.

USA ensured their passage into the knockout stages tonight with a commanding 2-0 victory over a torpid Republic of Ireland side in the scorching daylight at the San Siro. The first goal came in the 29th minute by way of Josh Woolf (Woole), who received the ball from McBride about 40 yds from goal and bounced off a physical challenge from a larger defender before regaining posession of the ball and riding a tackle into the top of the box to loft a shot off the outside of his right boot which curled just inside the far post, beating Given who had brought himself into no-mans land.

The second half saw some more urgency from the Irish, but in the 63rd minute, Brian McBride (Marcroad) was the beneficiary of a poor clearance by the Irish defence. The veteran forward received a pass from Donovan (Dotan) at the top of the box, took one touch and hammered a low shot past a diving Given to double the Americans' lead. The Irish hit the post in the late going after Robbie Keane's shot was saved by Timmy Howard (Hallaso) and fell to second half substitute Andy Reid, but that was as close as they could come all afternoon.

Finnan received a yellow card early in the match for a rash tackle on Bocanegra (Bonacelna).

USA 2 : 0 (1:0) Rep. Ireland

A tough writeup, as I'm not exactly sure what just happened in the blur of Spanish scoring. This much I do remember - it was a story of total domination in every aspect of the game. This even before Bilaya Ateba was sent off immediately after coming on in the second half.

The stats speak volumes here, particularly the 21-8 edge in shots. Villa was unstoppable - his first two goals were brilliant, and even if he did pick up the hat trick after scavanging some goalmouth slop - it was well earned. For maybe ten seconds there was a tinge of danger that the Lions might sneak back in and make it a match, but that third Villa goal followed by one seconds later by Juaquin put an end to such nonsense.

The Cameroon manger pegged the Spaniards as early favorites for the cup after such a brilliant showing in their first match. Cameroon has to hope for a miracle in the final match against Italy along with some other improbable results if they are to go through.

Spain - Cameroon
21(13) shots 8(5)
0 pens 0
5 freekicks 4
3 corners 1
4 fouls 5
48 poss 52

Great game Macca!

Thanks Blub, good game (made me s*** my pants near the end!).

Spain 5 - Italy 0

Raul 7'
Villa 16'
Villa 59'
Villa 61'
Torres 76'

24(14) Shots 11(5)
4 Free Kicks 4
4 (2) Fouls 5 (2)
0 Yellow Cars 1 - Cannavaro
51 Possession 49

Spain took advantage of the viral illness that swept through the Italian camp to beat Italy by five goals to nil with David Villa netting yet another hattrick.

Prior to the match Italian manager Scoop Brady discovered that several key members of his starting line-up had been beset by a nasty bout of gastroenteritis. After being found in a pool of his own vomit, striker Luca Toni was ruled out of the match and other members of the starting lineup including Cameronesi and Totti had to play-on despite been bady dehydrated (and smelling like regurgitated lasagne).

Spain took an early lead after Raul headed in a Xavi cross after only 7 minutes. Raul turned provider in the 16th minute sending a throughball into the red hot David Villa to finish past a sprawling Buffon.

After the inital setback Italy began to work their way into the match and the final outcome could have been much different if AC Milan striker Gilardino's close ranger header had not of struck the Spainish crossbar just before halftime.

The second half saw the tired Italians falter and David Villa struck twice again, both from close range. before Fernando Torres followed up on his own rebound to put in the 5th.

The final minutes of the match saw Italian captain Fabio Cannavaro bring down Villa in the box to earn a yellow card. Fernando Torres, however, sent the resulting spot-kick wide.

Spain play Sweden in their group final match while Italy are still to play both the Swedes and Cameroon.

Great game Scoop!

That means I can't play any because I think everyone else has 2 in!

Seriously, if anyone from my group is available to play on this "snow" day let me know as I am home today. I know it may kill the suspense, but I'm pretty sure you guys will be heavy favorites against me anyway.

Ooops, sorry Leebo - please disregard in your case - glad to see you got a match in the books - there was little suspense about US going through anyway.

Yeah, once they won twice, they were already through, since the top two teams in each group are into the Quarter Finals. In fact, I'm going back and editing my game report. . . .

Good game, Jared. That was my first online game with the new version and it is a lot of fun! I'm even doing better offline after Blub's shooting tips, some practice, and switching back to the wide view.

lsdean and naples, when's a good time for our group games? I remember I got an invite from one of you late Sunday night and I accepted, but nothing happened when I went to the next screen. Strange.

I think that was me that sent the invite. Can't tell you exactly what happened, but maybe by the time you accepted I had given up on waiting?

Anyway, I should be online a bit the next few days, usually past 10pm est, but occasionally in the afternoon. Let's try to catch each other in the next few days, and if that doesn't work, then we'll set up a specific time for Sunday.

Sweden 0 Spain 6

Torres 14'
Raul 16'
Lucic (Own Goal)
Torres 54'
Reyes 85'
Villa 87'

7(3) Shots 18(11)
0 Penalties 0
4 Free Kicks 1
1 Corners 2
1 Fouls 4
53 Possession 47

Sweden's Teddy Lucic had a nightmare of a match as Spain defeated an unlucky Swedish side by six goals to nil.

Having already drawn with a strong Cameroon side 1-1, Sweden started the match off in confidant mood and dominated the early possession with Ibrahimovic at the heart of every attacking move. Unfortunately, a swift counterattack saw Spain's David Villa send a crisp through pass to Fernando Torres who finished with aplomb past a stranded Rami Shaaban in the Swedish net.

Just two minutes later the Spanish lead was doubled as Raul dispossed a daillying Teddy Lucic to generate yet another breakaway goal. The two goal lead was flattering for the Spaniards as Sweden had utterly dominated possession up until this point.

Just minutes later Sweden could, and should, have drawn a goal back. A swerving cross from Freddie Ljunberg was drilled in by Henrik Larsson and Spanish keeper Cassilas could only palm the ball into the path of an unmarked Wilhemsson. Amazingly, Wilhemsson fired over an empty net from just 5 yards out.

Just before halftime Teddy Lucic's evening went from bad to worse as he knocked a rebound from a David Villa shot into his own net. Spain took a commanding 3 goal lead into the half.

After some tactical changes Sweden began the second half with a greater cutting edge to their play with both Larsson and Ibrahimovic causing problems in the box. However, another devistating counterattack from the Spanish effectively ended the match as Villa dispossessed Lucic and sent in another through ball for Torres who this time cooly rounded Shabhan before slotting into an open net.

Torres was subbed off for Jose Antonio Reyes who conjured up the goal of the match in the 85th minute- cutting in from the right side and beating three Swedish defenders before cooly curling the ball inside the far post.
Two minutes later Villa continued his hot streak with a diving header past the Swedish keeper.

As the players left the field Sweden's Teddy Lucic was pelted with rocks and ikea flyers by irate Swedish fans.

Spain finish Group A in top spot while Sweden still have a chance to progress as they still have one match left to play (against Italy) and could still concievably finish second.

Great game crucialmike, sorry about the own goal. Blame Lucic!

Good game Macca. The moral of the story is that I DIDN'T destroy my controller afterwards. Who would have thought.
