Blub, what about two five-team groups if things hold at 10 players? Or, what's wrong with uneven groups?

Just throwing that out there. . .

Blub, thanks for getting the league going. I am really tempted, but with my constant travels (as I am now) it's just very difficult for me to play a game weekly, and add the fact that I am also on PST, when back at home. But regardless, if whoever I need to face is understanding of my schedule, I would love to get in too. (If you have enough people, just count me as a back up.)

It's 5:00 PM ET, the atmosphere here is just electric. Brightly-costumed and absolutely stunning young women representing each of the ten teams have gathered with lotto balls in hand. Let's get started...

The Federation certainly doesn't want to exclude anyone, so there will be a last minute change in the format. What I'm going to do -- er, excuse me for a sec while I shake hands with Pele...Hello Franz, great to see you again...Diego! You've lost weight...Kate, who loves ya baby -- okay, sorry, give me a sec and I'll figure out a way to get everyone in and still start play tonight...

Allrighty, here we go. Drum roll please...There will be three groups of four.

NOTE: I've now moved pertinent information to the first post in the thread. Please see the first post for any additional updates.

No problem and great to have you in. The "game night" thing is purely optional, and will start at 9:00 PM ET Sunday. The only scheduling requirement is at least one match a week - that should allow plenty of flexibility for your schedule.

Sweet! Those bastards from TBD will be made to pay for their hegemonic foreign policy, poor human rights record and cruelty to animals!

Thanks for setting this up, Blub. Dean or Naples, I probably can't be around until 10PM Central tonight. Anyone interested in a game?

Let those TBD bastards have it! I'll be online tonight beginning at 9:00 PM EST if those lucky enough to be in my group want a game.

Okay, I'll join if you'll have me. Is France kosher? And I mean that in both respects of the question.

Beauty - we have 12! France is fine, Slumber. stevieg987, sorry but Slumber beat you by just a few minutes. Since you won't have the game until later I hope this is okay. I'd be sure to sign up for Zeppo's league in the meantime, I'm sure we'll do another tourney like this shortly as well.

Ah yes, the end of TBD is quick and painless.

I got good news and bad news.

The good- I'm available all night to play. Getting over a nasty cold but I promise not to use it as an excuse unless I lose by a lot.

The bad- I was completely lost when I tried to invite a couple of you guys for a game over the weekend. What do I do? Create a ranked game and then press the big button on my controller to see friends, and then invite friend? Nothing seemed to work. Perhaps it's my cold affecting my brain. Anyways, if someone could give the scoop on this, I would appreciate it.

I should be on tonight for a few hours from 9pm est on.

Also, fanatic, I've never tried a ranked match, but you can play your friends by creating a player match and then inviting a friend.

You cannot invite friends into a ranked game, so the only real way to play friends is to play 'player match' games, for which they don't keep any stats.

Actually, I don't know whether this is more the fault of Konami or MS/Xbox. I have a feeling it's more about MS, since so few games allow one to invite friends into ranked matches, especially on the 360.

I assume we should have injuries set to 'On' and condition set to 'Random?' What about the weather setting and the season setting? I prefer the pause clock, known in Konami-speak as the 'time limit' set to 'long,' and would suggest all home teams set it so.

As the groups have shaken out, I wonder if I should bother to play my games at all :P . Slumberland took France? You bastard! I should have just been greedy and taken them myself, but I thought it would be fun to seek a challenge.

Oh well. It should be a fun three games, and I might have a shot at a point agains the USA! (Which would, of course, break my heart to shreds  )

Good luck all!

I was surprised they were still available! I feel mildly cheap about taking them, but I figure my wild inconsistency will even things out in the end. My head said Germany but my typing fingers said Les Bleus...

Yes, I've been trying to figure all this out for the past couple of hours. From what I gather you have to create an unranked match against friends, and then apparently if the friend is online they get a request. Now I don't know if this means that EVERYONE online on your friend list gets a request, I have a feeling it might which will be a nightmare.

Problem is that I haven't been able to test it out past this point, so the most I have been able to set while it searches for friends is the half length and national or club sides. I assume you get all the stadium, weather, pause stuff once your friend joins.

Let's leave weather and season at random, but if someone plays with something different it's not the end of the world. If it gives you the option for pause length, it should indeed be "long."

I'm going online now. A few friendlies to warm up might not be a bad idea, but if anyone wants to jump right in to the real thing I'm game as well.

Don't forget to have a pencil and paper handy and to record bookings AS THEY HAPPEN!!!! You don't get that information in the post-match screen.

Sorry, yes injuries should also be "on" although they won't carry over from match-to-match.

OK here's the skinny, then:

You must create a 'player match.' It is best then, thought not necessary, to set the option for 'freinds only' to 'on.'

Once you've done that, you can access your friends list and send an invite to your friend of choice. The game won't send invites to everyone on your frineds list.

After your friend has accepted your invite, and joined the match, you receive a message telling you 'you've received a challenge' and a note of who that is who has challenged you. You can at that point accept or decline the challenge (this is not possible in ranked games, where your only option is 'accept challenge').

Once you've accepted the challenge, you go to the team selection and pick your teams. You only have one minute to make your selection before the game moves on to the next stage. You can then set the stadium you'd like to play in, including 'random,' as well as the time of day (day, night, or random), the season (summer, winter, or random), and the weather (fine, rainy, or random). After that, you can select the rest of the game options, including Injuries on or off, Condition, Ball Type, Match Type: E.T. on or off, PKs on or off, Max number of subs, Time Limit (the pause time per pause, as well as the pre-game, halftime and post-game time limits), and Number of Pauses.

And there you go.

The settings for DSP WE League games are to have time of day up to the home team, season set to that specific setting for that season (Winter right now, will be summer once we hit the equinox), and weather (set to random for the league games). We set condition to random, injuries to on, ET and PKs off, subs to 3, time limit to max, and numeber of pauses to max, which is 9 in this game (I don't believe there's an option for 7 in WE07). Personally, I think all settings should be the same for this tourney, with the exception of season which should be summer (since this is a sort of WC-type deal here), but I will go with whatever Blub chooses.

Yep, first match is in the books. Lesson learned - the default is for extra time. Make sure you shut that off in the group stage. (I never would have caught that either).

To keep things as simple as possible I think we should use the same settings as Zepp uses for the league. I think they're all posted here in various posts, and I will try to update the rules on the site as soon as possible tonight.

Sweden 1, Cameroon 1

First matches often disappoint, but not this one. It was 90 minutes of end-to-end stuff with the outcome on a knife's edge the entire time. Both sides played wonderful attacking football, giving the overflow crowd plenty to cheer about.

Things looked bleak for Sweden relatively early, and the tournament saw its first controversy. Alexandersson was sent off for a cynical tackle on Eto'o just outside the box. At least according to the referee. The Cameroon side and its supporters were convinced the infraction took place in the box and protested the lack of a penalty.

Perhaps preoccupied by their protests, Cameroon wasted the resulting free kick and failed to take advantage of the man advantage for the rest of the half. Indeed, it was the Swedes who struck first on a brilliant Larsson goal off a deflection just before the break, sending the yellow and blues in at the half with momentum on their side, despite remaining a man down.

Play in the second half continued at a torrid pace, with ample opportunities for both sides. Cameroon lost the man advantage at about 60 minutes when Atouba was sent off for a last-man challenge. Cameroon began throwing out everything but the kitchen sink tactically searching for an equalizer. The Swedish defense was airtight, and it looked bleak for the Lions.

Against the run of play in the 80th minute, a brilliant through ball from Meyong Ze, who had come on only seconds earlier, found Eto'o alone in the box and he managed to curl it past the outstretched keeper from a difficult angle to secure the equalizer.

Exhausted, both sides seemed content with the draw. However, the Swedes nearly stole a victory in the waning seconds after a horrible giveaway by the Cameroon keeper. Perhaps as stunned as everyone in the stands, Larsson put it just wide and the whistle blew shortly therearfter.

A tremendous match and a great way to kick off the tournament. Cameroon was outplayed most of the match and certainly lucky to escape with a point. The Cameroon manager was quick to nod Wilhelmsson of Sweden as the man of the match. He created difficulties all day with lethal passing and well-timed runs.

The full stats:

SWE CMR
1 Score 1
13(5) shots 10(4)
0 pen 0
6 fks 5
1 corners 1
5 fouls 6
1 yellow 1

57 poss 43

Goals:
Larsson 43', Eto'o 80'

Bookings:
Yellow: Mellberg (SWE), Emana (CMR)
Red: Alexanderssen (SWE), Atouba (CMR)

Great summary Blublub...and great game too!

The yellow and red cards certainly added intensity to the game, not that the action wasn't amazing already.

And yes, I really do think you were in the box on that one...

Good luck the rest of the way.

England takes 3 points in its opening match with Czech Republic, 3-2.

The game was pretty much nonstop offense, with tons of chances at each end. Twice the Czechs couldn't hold a lead. Looks like I'm gonna have to change formations to get more bodies on defense for the next matchup....

Scoring
Baros (Koller) 16
Lampard 49
Koller (Baros) 58
Gerrard (Rooney) 71
Owen (Rooney 76

Stats (CZE on left)
12(8) SOG 11(9)
2 FK 3
2 CK 3
3(2) F(Off) 2(1)
55 Poss 45

There were no cards for either team.

Apologies for the delay - the website is now formatted and up-to-date. I think I have consolidated all the rules, but if I am missing any (or if anything else is wrong) please let me know. Updates should be more timely from now on.

France 3 - Croatia 2

Henry, Henry, Henry. Thierry's hat trick carried Les Bleus in a back-and-forth match, earning the win in France's first group stage contest. Basically, Henry kept emerging from various tangles and clusterf*cks with possession intact, as he is wont to do. Eventually Rob just started going for his legs. :)

27' Suira
34' Henry
54' Henry
56' Suira (Pkro)
58' Henry (Vieira)

Shots (on goal) - 10(6), 9(7)
FK - 7, 4
Corners - 1, 1
Fouls - 4, 7
Possession - 54, 46

Bookings - Konac (Yellow)

Whoa, Blubub, nice site for the tournament! Did you have that all ready to go, or did you just whip that up?
