Went with my wife to look at digital cameras tonight and swung past a Best Buy and a Circuit City.
Best Buy has a shanty town on the side of the building that is at least 50 people deep. Don't think there's any way they have that many units on hand.
Circuit City had no one--it is in a new retail development that is not allowing any camping. Two security trucks were hanging out in the parking lot in what I assume is an attempt to prevent it.
Speaking of Circuit City, here's a rumor from Kotaku

There's also a huge line of people lined up on the street of downtown Minneapolis outside of Target. Um, seems like a bad idea to me.A Circuit City source tells me that, company wide, their shipments of Playstation 3 20GBs have been completely canceled. The rumor is that this is something happening nationwide.

LOL! Or better yet, make them go around the chairs in a circle to music... seriously, WTF???jondiehl wrote:pk500 wrote:The manager set up ten chairs outside the store and then moved the crowd to a different location. Perhaps they should make obstacle courses for them. Or maybe timed laps around the parking lot. Fastest 10 times gets a chair/ticket, fat kids go home now.

Or keeping in the violence theme, just have someone open fire until only 10 people are left standing. They get the PS3's.Kazuya wrote:LOL! Come to think of it, that sounds like a new game concept for Rockstar -- Grand Theft Console.

That level of slobbering, sweaty palmed (or hairy palmed) fervor over a videogame system is idiotic. I just don't get it. I was in Wal Mart this evening, and the lady in Electronics told me that some dude had been sitting at Wal Mart waiting for a PS3 and a Wii for about 44 hours-a college student.
And we wonder what's happening to education...

Reviews are coming in and it doesn't look like Sony's claim that "HD gaming begins when the PS3 is launched" is coming to fruition.
Here are a few excerpts:
http://www.gamebrink.com/forums/showthr ... #post28670
This kind of information makes me glad I skipped this launch because compared with the past two Sony launches, this one is a disaster for the end user. Hopefully in 6 months or so, Sony will have many of their current issues resolved.
Here are a few excerpts:
"From start to finish, Call of Duty 3 is an intense experience and a great game. The visuals are mostly excellent and the sound is some of the best in any game to date. However, an inconsistent frame rate and fewer multiplayer options make the PlayStation 3 version slightly inferior to the Xbox 360 version. Ultimately, if the Call of Duty series hasn't won you over previously, Call of Duty 3 isn't going to do much to change your mind. But for anyone who considers themselves a fan of the series, Call of Duty 3 is a must-play.
Oh, and just for argument's sake, we popped in the 360 version of Ultimate Alliance to compare and we have to say... the PS3 edition just isn't as polished. Comparatively, there's a lot more framerate stutter with our game compared to theirs (expect hiccups when turning the camera in highly-populated areas) and the colors are deeper and seem to be in better contrast with the 360. At least Sony owners can take solace in knowing that in 1080p, their game's textures certainly look better, and that regardless of resolution, Ultimate Alliance has better bloom lighting and more particles on PS3.
Visually, the PlayStation 3 version of Need for Speed Carbon falls short of its Xbox 360 counterpart. The two games run at roughly the same framerate, but the PS3's filtering effects, specifically the blurring, can be ugly. Road textures look nice and detailed at low speeds, but when you're flying down the road and the game blurs everything, they simply look poor. A few other odd things don't match up either, like the Drafter's wake, which is a transparent cylinder on the 360 and some rather ugly blue streamers on the PS3.
And this shows that with all the extra time developers had with PS3, they still had issues with at least one game...Were there only a leap from the current gen to Sony's next gen system, Madden NFL 07 for the PS3 would be a much richer feat. However, since this is the exact same title that's come out on the 360 with minor adjustments to some of the gameplay and the visuals, it's hard to be blown away with its debut on the PS3. If you're moving from the PS2 to the PS3, you'll most likely be impressed by the title, but if you happen to own the 360 version, there's not really anything included here that would make you want to purchase this title again.

Oh great. This is only 2 miles from my house. Way to represent.

What's ever sadder is that the clutz that ran into the pole is going to sue Wal Mart.

I just looked at today's Fry's ad and they are only selling the PS3 in a bundle. They are selling the 60gb system and 8 games for $1079.91 and the 20gb system and 8 games for $979.91. I'm not sure if the 8 games are preselected or not but the 8 games they show in the ad are:
Marvel:Ultimate Alliance, NBA 2k7, Dark Kingdom, Resistance, Madden 07, Gundam, Tony Hawk's Project 8, and Ridge Racer 7.

It is a damn shame that the PS3 is getting such negative feedback from users who have had the system for a few days....the article below is a couple of Game Informer employees who have had the system for a few days. Interesting read....

NBA wasn't great on the PS2 or the PSP, so it shouldn't really be a surprise that the PS3 version is below NBA 2k7. With the same team (including Chris and Kolbe) working on the PS3 version of the Show, I'm not worried a bit.DivotMaker wrote:Here's hoping they do a much better job with that game than they did with NBA 07....GTHobbes wrote:But I sure will be excited to lay my hands on a PS3 whenever The Show comes out...Diablo, are you with me?
They're two completely different games; it'd be like worrying about Capcom screwing up Resident Evil 4 just because Devil May Cry 2 wasn't so hot. As you pointed out, MLB has been consistently good and NBA has been consistently bad. Now, there are a lot of reasons why MLB may not make the jump smoothly to the PS3, but they don't have anything to do with NBA 07. There's no reason to link the two at all, unless you're just being a negative nellie.GTHobbes wrote:NBA wasn't great on the PS2 or the PSP, so it shouldn't really be a surprise that the PS3 version is below NBA 2k7. I was not aware of the history of the previous generation games. What I was referring to is how it appears that this first batch of games for PS3 are not faring as well as their 360 counterparts. Understanding that there is no 360 version of NBA07, that was the gist of my remarks....GTHobbes wrote: NBA wasn't great on the PS2 or the PSP, so it shouldn't really be a surprise that the PS3 version is below NBA 2k7. So what's the deal with the changing of resolutions? The article above states that one must use the composite connection in order to access the menu to enable particular HD resolutions on the HDMI output? That seems a bit archaic, but after this is complete, can you seamlessly switch between the HD and non-HD inputs? I travel pretty extensively with my 360 and the fact that I can snap into my HD set at home and non-HD sets on the road is a big plus. The 360 even improved over the Xbox's implementation by maintaining separate aspect ratios for the HD/non-HD inputs so I no longer have to remember to switch in/out of widescreen when gaming home or on the road.DivotMaker wrote:It is a damn shame that the PS3 is getting such negative feedback from users who have had the system for a few days....the article below is a couple of Game Informer employees who have had the system for a few days. I'm laughing pretty heartily at that one. Funny, plus I'm in a chipper mood because the Oilers are up 3-0 in the first period.

Who's dumb, the thugs who shot and stabbed people or the stores for not managing the situation better?
They shouldn't have let people camp out.
They could have tried to create a more orderly situation, like having people sign for a drawing weeks ahead and then drawing for just the number of units on hand.
If they paid attention to the speculation from just the preorders on eBay, they'd know there was a potential for incidents like this.

I agree. Other than the Sony stores whose ulterior motive is to drive perceived demand, I think retailers had more to gain than lose from launch day chaos.
It's not like Black Friday where the game is to get customers in the door to buy things other than the loss leader sale items. I don't think PS3 buyers were lingering in the store to shop for other items. They were probably running from the door to electronics to the register to the parking lot.
I'm surprised the Corporate Offices didn't learn from the 360 launch and send out more standard instructions on how to handle the launch. It seemed like the chains left it up to individual stores on how to deal with the details. I suspect in some cases the responsibility got delegated down to a shift manager leading to ridiculousness like the musical chairs race in Wisconsin.
