I understand that the PS3’s future may be filled with awesome games, but what I just don’t get is why so many are freaking out at their launch. Are people really that excited about Resistance or Motorstorm!?!? Are these really all the people that held off on a 360?

I love video games and new tech. gadgets, but I am just not fully understanding this launch and it’s excitement. It must be because I had a 360 for a year already…
And I think the hype and anticipation over the PS3, despite its high price and lack of a killer launch title, adds ammunition to Tjung's belief that Sony will win this round of the console wars.

If people are getting this geeked over a $600 machine with only two original games, what's going to happen when the gaming library blossoms at the end of the console's first year, much like what's happening now with the 360? And if Blu-Ray catches on as a format, that will boost the PS3 even further.

Take care,
PK

Some of the people that preordered from ebgames have traded in their 360's as credit towards the PS3 and games. I guess ebgames might be offering a better than average deal if you trade in your 360.
That must be a isolated local thing because I called 3 EB Games here in the Houston area and they each claim to have had maybe one or two people ask about trading a 360 for a PS3. They also stated that they would take PS2's in trade for pre-orders towards a PS3, but they would not take a 360 in trade for a PS3 mainly because the allocation of PS3's has been cut so drastically.

One manager Jeff, that I have been buying from at EB for 15 years did state that if EB Games ever did take trades of 360's for PS3's it would not be until well into 2007 when the supply chain is such that they have sufficient stock of PS3 systems (both versions).

EB Games Manager's words, not mine.
They are not taking trade for trade. People are getting credit on their used 360's and using that towards their PS3 purchase. All Ebgames will buy your exsisiting 360's. I just figured maybe they were giving more credit if you are buying a PS3.

I don't see that at all. The people that are camped out in St. Louis are camped out for PS3's...not Wii's. I'm feeling fairly confident that I'll find a Wii this weekend.

My policy is just like the 360, I will wait until I can get one without jumping through any hoops. I ain't standing in lines or paying a nickel over retail. If that means I get one in April, that's fine... I have several unopened 360 and PS2 games to play anyway. I do have a couple of "connections" that may or may not come through (likely not) where one could be made available to me. One thing that definitely made me more receptive to buying a launch unit was the fact that Sony upped the ante and matched Nintendo's 1 year warranty for the console (M$ offers only a paltry 3 months, as did Sony with the first two Playstations). So if I rang it up on one of the warranty doubling Platinum cards, I'd feel pretty protected against a console meltdown.

That being said, I can't imagine how getting $180 for a 360 Premium (that is the number I was quoted at all 3 EB's I called) in store credit is a good deal at all. I think you would have had to be sucking pretty hard on the Sony Koolaid dispenser to be making such a trade.

That kind of fits my thinking as well and I have to give Sony credit for upping the warranty for a full year. To any experienced 360 owner, there is alot of value in that feature. That being said, I will likely wait until I have the cash in hand and I can walk into a CompUSA and buy the $599 unit off the shelf and get the 2 year TAP warranty along with the purchase. From the looks of current projections, that will be in late Spring.

I just talked to a friend of mine in Florida whose family has a HUGE contracting business...ie. they have some connections. They are corporate sponsors for Costco (not familiar with them) so he is trying to get a PS3 thru them. Evidently his father has some serious pull. He told me he would grab me one tomorrow morning if I wanted and ship it to me. I'll believe it when I see it. You never know though.

These people standing in lines are most likely early 20's that might only work part time, or not even work at all. $180 credit might seem like a good deal to them at this current time if they really want the PS3.

If that is the case, I feel sorry for them because I don't see any way that a PS3 is worth $380 to $480 more just for the unit. I have seen nothing that indicates the output of the PS3 will be worth that much or anything more than the output of the 360. However, people are entitled to their perceptions, but I can't help but think they are going to be disappointed if they perceive that the PS3 will be worth the trade off. That being said, I am sure that those who make such a trade will have to find some way to justify it in their own mind. I wish them luck.

The reason being is that there will be plenty more Wii's than PS3's at their prospective launches. People aren't going to need to camp out to get a Wii more than likely. Plus, how many of those who are camping out for the PS3 truly want one? How many are just looking to make a quick profit?

Divot:

So I take it you don't like the PS3 and think it's poor value for the money? I never would have known that by reading this thread -- stop being so f*cking opaque.

Forget the launch...how sad is it that I'm excited just to sit here and watch you guys discuss the damn thing. Figure it will hold me over until college hoops comes out early next week.

It seems I spend way too much time here.

Resume discussion.

You are not alone Mutt, I'm the same way. I have probably read a dozen articles about the PS3 and Wii launches in the past week and monitored this thread, but will not buy either one for 6 months, if ever.

LOL, that obvious, huh? The only way I would trade my 360 in for a PS3 is if I could walk into CompUSA and do a TAP exchange which would give me full purchase price towards a PS3. If another 360 dies (on my third now) I might go that way, especially if the PS3's show they are well-built and not susceptible to all the quality issues that the 360 has had initially. The one thing I would have to consider long and hard about moving to the PS3 would be losing XB Live. To me, that feature alone is the key feature that separates the two systems.

Ironically, I also posted above that I will likely buy a PS3 when I can walk into a store and buy it off the shelf. Alot will depend if I have purchased another HDTV by then. As I have stated before, if I did not have a 360, and it was not available or out yet, I would be all over a PS3 because now that I have enjoyed HD gaming and with my interest in PC gaming waning, I am hooked on this generation of consoles. Because of XB Live, and the fact that I am no longer spending money on computer upgrades, having both consoles is conceivable at some point in 2007. Who knows how they will both shape up at that point in time, but it is interesting to discuss and speculate, aint it?

So are we talking Little Carmine type pull? Make sure to check your unit for bloodstains.

It's the Jimmy Hoffa Limited Edition. Fragments of Hoffa's skeleton are embedded into the shiny black plastic of the unit.

$10,100 final selling price.

There's no way someone is actually paying that price. Or is crack more of a widespread epidemic than I thought?

Take care,

If it's a millionaire dollar athlete or some rich actor, $10k is a drop in the bucket.

Coincidence that the winning bidder has a similar username to a longtime DSP/SR member (floridagators)? Hmmm.

I'm getting vicarious kicks out of reading about the launch insanity, but I sure hope hope nobody gets seriously injured in the mad rush tomorrow.
