They've had a couple of episodes, like the finale last season and maybe one of the other last episodes leading to the cliffhanger where they minimized the backstory and let the action and tension flow.

Last night, there was the potential for a big confrontation (actually two if Sawyer had been able to take off all the armed ones, including Juliette) so the tension was building up.

Then they'd go to commercial and when they got back, they went to the back story. So Sun can hold secrets from her husband and she's capable of deception. And it was a long back story which detracted from the suspense.

It's as if the writers heeded the criticism about not too much being revealed about the Others. So for now, they've dropped the other questions, like Michael and Walt and the other survivors. Or how long since the monster/security system made an appearance?

At the beginning of the last season, it was about the hatch. Then they had a lot about the Dharma Initiative. They've cooled that for a couple of episodes but the previews for next week go back to the hatch apparently.

They have a lot of irons to keep in the fire, even without the backstories.

Trixie's warning may be telling, that we're not you're enemy but if Sun shot her, they would be. They're not your enemy but they send spies to abduct some of you and even kill some of you, then enslave you, then play mind games with you, then make sure you can't escape the island.

So lets see a real war then.

Anyone else find it interesting that Henry (i forget his real name) said he's been on the island his entire life. That surprised me.

And as a Red Sox fan i howled at Jack's face when he watched the replay...i had the same one when i saw it live. 8O

I'm not going to sit here and try to defend the show, I understand a lot of people loathe the slow plot and backstories etc. If people want to hate a show but continue to watch it, who am I to question that logic.

I was hoping that we could discuss the show here again this season, for the people who like its direction and enjoy tossing around those questions. It is very apparent that this thread is not going to turn out that way however, which is unfortunate.

When it does then I will be happy to contribute, but I'm out of the debate on whether the shows formula is good or whether it is giving us enough information as that is personal preference in my book.

I've gone back to watch the show this season since Ive decided to not take it too serious. It is still entertaining even though I hope some of the plots would take faster to develop.

So far, I do like the show this season. It seems to have that mystery to it again like it did in season 1.

Well, it seems obvious (as it would to the characters) that it's not like the Others would volunteer any answers. Jack basically asked this last week and this, and received ambiguous answers ("Who we were isn't important, all that matters is who we are now." and "I've lived on this island my whole life and I have the power to get you home" essentially).

I think I would intuitively know that the folks who have enslaved me and seem to enjoy tazering me at any given opportunity may not be interested in exchanging biographies. :)
Yeah, I agree. I wouldn't expect the "Others" to answer but I know I would get pissed if some nerdy jackass tasered me and then said, "we are not the enemy." Could have fooled me. :)

BTW, I can't stand Julliette (the new blonde lady that seems to have a big stake in things). She has a way about her that I would love to see someone just smack the spit out of her mouth...maybe Kate :)

I'd love to see Juliette and Kate steam-clean each others' carpets -- although I doubt there's much more down there than a small area rug on either broad -- in one of those cages.

Now THAT would be Must-See TV. :)

Take care,

I loved how Sawyer set it up to get into a fight with the others so he could get a feel for everyones strengths and weaknesses, too bad Ben heard everything he told Kate in the cage though.

I still like the show for what it is, I look forward to it every week and it's fun discussing it with people at work.

Well, for what it's worth, that helped confirm that the baby that Sun is carrying probably isn't Jin's because he's infertile and she was slapping skins with "that other guy".

It was previously speculated by some that Sun had become pregnant through some miracle provided by the island.. I don't think we can be completely certain yet, but I would assume that it isn't Jin's.

Oh, and it wasn't just a Sun backstory, it was a Sun AND a Jin backstory. I actually found it to be pretty entertaining, especially seeing Jin go all insane on that guy.

Okay, so someone give me their take on Desmond now. Wasn't thrilled with the episode (liked it but didn't blow me away) BUT that was one cool twist. His eyes as he was tossing rocks in the ocean were freaky.

Thoughts?

The thing where he seemed to know the future (the speech Locke would give) was a nice touch. I agree, the episode wasn't the best, although Locke's backstory had a good twist and ending.

This is one thing I think the show does well. I know a lot of people hate the pacing and want them to bring their A game every week. IMO, that would get tedious and ridiculous. It's like a boxing match, they jab and dance for a few episodes, then deliver a great series of punches.

I didn't notice anything strange with his eyes? Did I miss something obvious?

This is definitely not a show to watch with kids (or a wife) around to distract you :)

Matt,

It wasn't like they did anything strange, just that wide eyed kind of psycho look. You probably didn't miss it at all, it just looked sinister to me.

But his knowledge of Locke's speech before it happend was more what i was referring to. That was a cool twist.

Also, am i the only one who thinks this "polar bear" looks like something out of Oblivion and not your normal run of the mill, zoo polar bear?

This ep. is probably setting the stage for a big confrontation. Locke snaps out of his funk, becomes a hunter again, rescues Locke and Desmond shows up.

So now they can go rescue the hostages. Because if Locke had to go with Charlie...

The back story seemed pointless. So he was a pot grower and didn't clean up a mess he created so this time, he does it. Does he really have to have screwed up in the past to drive him to rescue Eko?

If they're going to do a Locke back story, they might as well get into how he lost the use of his legs, instead of saving that.

I thought the episode was ok, I enjoyed boone coming up in the vision quest sequence a lot. The Desmond thign was a nice twist, Ecko talking to Locke when he was unconsious.

I know that hte backstories are what a lot of people dislike, I though Locke's was interesting this week.

but here is the thng that drives me nuts with this show and it keeps getting worse. No one tells anyone anything or is the least bit curious. Examples:

1. Here comes Locke limping out of the woods, he has been missing for a day and no one has apparently bothered to look for him, he is bruised and bloddy. What do we get, a classic exchnage between claire and charlie with an "oh gee there is john, wonder where he has been since the island imploded" (I threw in that last part)

2. Hurley witness Desmonds new future telling ablities and just sits there and says nothing to Charlie.

3. No one is the least bit curious to see what happened to the hatch and determine if, oh I don't know if there is danger.

Oh yeah, those two people who talked at the end, those will be new cast members this season, because the red shirts don't get lines usually.

I have a feeling this backstory will tie into that. I suspected last night that there would be some shoot out and that would be what left Locke paralyzed. They didn't resolve it last night but that could be part of the arc.

Danimal, I agree with you on points 1 and 3. Hurley not saying anything wasn't that surprising since it was at the very end of the episode. But it was also weird that no one knew Jack et al were missing.

Plus, someone should be investigating the continued assaults on all the DUI perps :D

Desmond being able to tell the future is one thing but what I want to know is how did Locke "know" where Ecko was...and that he had to save him. He didn't get all that from the sweat shack. I liked the episode but I agree with the above post about how no one asks anything at certain times.

I think you're wrong here. Characters talked a lot to each other about past events in this episode, e.g. Hurley said exactly what happened to Jack, Kate and Sawyer. Why would you expect him to blurt out something about what Desmond said to him to Charlie when it would just make him look crazy?

"Charlie, guess what! You know that speech Locke just gave, well, when I came across Desmond in the jungle he mentioned the speech to me before it happened!"

"Eat many mushrooms when you were walking back across the island, Hurley?"

Could've been suicide (he had the pearls, which is a romantic gesture consistent with suicide) or it could've been...Sun. That would be thematically consistent with the opening scene and the title of the episode: The Glass Ballerina.

The big theme of the episode was how Locke was a hunter. Finding Echo further demonstrated this because he went back to the hatch as a starting point and tracked down Echo in the woods using his hunting knowledge to track his location.
