OT: LOST Season 3 Discussion **** SPOILERS ****
This was one of my most anticipated season opening shows in a long time and I must say I was not disappointed. Another great episode and now really looking forward to next week to see more of what is going on in the hatch and what happens with Jack's encounter with the guy from the stadium.

Agreed. Great opening episode. Love how certain camera angles created even more suspense.
I also watched "E Ring" last night on NBC with Benjamin Bratt and Dennis Hopper and wasn't impressed. I just can't wrap my head around Hopper as a colonel, and Bratt's wiseguy character is annoying and cliched.
Enjoyed "My Name is Earl" -- quirky, different -- and am anticipating "Everyone Hates Chris" tonight. Those three shows are the only new shows that interest me in the slightest.
Take care,
PK

Sorry for the threadjack...pk500 wrote:Enjoyed "My Name is Earl" -- quirky, different
We were part of a "focus group" for that show back in March. My wife and I both thought the pilot sucked. We were waiting for them to call us for impressions, but they never called back. We just assumed it was because it was so bad. They never told us the title or network. We just assumed it was something for the WB

I will keep an open mind though as I generally do like "quirky and different" comedy and I like them thinking outside the box. I can't wait to see another episode because the reviews have been good for the series.

I'll agree that the pilot of "Earl" wasn't that funny. But the script was clever and filled with one-liners that you picked up on if you rewound and listened again. Sort of "Trailer Park Boys Lite," well, very light.
"Earl" definitely is a risky comedy for NBC. It's not politically correct; it doesn't involve handsome and beautiful singles living as friends in New York; it doesn't involve a middle-class husband and wife trying to make it through the absurdities of everyday life.
But it does have potential. A lot of potential to be something really quirky and clever like "Arrested Development" is based on its critical acclaim.
I love shows that push the proverbial envelope like that, so I'm willing to give "Earl" a few more weeks. But if it drags by the end of week three or four or so, well, I've got better things to do with my time. But I'm hopeful.
As I watched "Earl" I thought, "Man, anyone born after 1975 won't have a clue to any of the subtle humor and setting of this show." Not good when trying to reach the lucrative and valuable 18-34 advertising demographic.
Sadly, Americans want stupid, in-your-face, laugh track comedy. "Earl" isn't like that, which makes it an early candidate for the Trio network's "Brilliant ... But Cancelled" series of shows. Hopefully that's not the case. After all, "Seinfeld" was considered off-beat and quirky when it debuted.

Thought Lost was great! The opening scene was well done.
I watched Threshold last week, and liked it a lot as well. X-Files from the side of the government.
My Tivo Seaon Passes-
Lost
Survivor - Still the King, but the premiere was a little boring.
Apprentice (both Trump's and Martha's) - Caught Martha's last night, and thought it was well done. It goes to show how much of the show is actually Mark Burnett.
House - Great show. House is a great character.
West Wing - Thought the series picked up nicely last season after kind of coasting for a few seasons.
Threshold - The pilot has sucked me in.
The Daily Show - Never disappoints!
Family Guy - Duh!
Curb Your Enthusiasm - Duh!
Extras - New HBO show from the creator of The Office.
Real time with Bill Maher - Starting to tire of it. Was looking forward to P.J. O'Rourke last week, only to see him have to deal with two of the biggest nitwit liberals ever on the show. Made for really crappy TV.
NFL Matchup - EA tries to ruin something else I love! Been watching this show for years, when it to Edge NFL Matchup. They breakdown game film each week, showing how team succeed and fail, and what to watch for the upcoming week. You will learn more in a half hour, that an entire season of NFL Primetime. Now that EA is sponsoring, we also get to see plays run on Madden as well. What a f***in waste!
Wow! That's almost pathetic. I really need to get a life!
edit: Almost forgot to include the new season of The Office. Not as good as the BBC version, but great stuff.

Lost definately did not disappoint last night! The end of episode one left me with the same hightened anxiety I had after nearly every episode last season. Great stuff. One thing that was interesting (Spoiler below)
Was the guy in the hatch. He was the same guy who was running with Jack in the stadium (which was obvious). If you remember, he said goodbye by saying, "see you in another life" Might mean nothing but I found it interesting.

I think we can safely assume it means something. When the episode opened I was like, well there is some guy living down there and he thinks there was a nuclear war or something. But in the end when we found out who it was, I am thinking wtf is going on.Diablo25 wrote:One thing that was interesting (Spoiler below)

I caught that "see you in another life" bit too, which would seem to reference the idea the characters are in some form of purgatory, but from what I understand the show's creators have categorically denied that the Lost "survivors" had actually died.
Solid premier for Season 2, I thought. It pretty carried the same traits I thought last season had which was that it's a highly entertaining popcorn show with some compelling characters, but not nearly as deep as it seems to want to fancy itself.
They simply cannot provide enough screentime for Hurley..

I beg to differ: 48 minutes of screen time for Evangeline Lilly (Kate) per week isn't enough. I could look at her sweaty, tight body in perpetuity. Oh, and she's a beautiful girl, too.ubrakto wrote:They simply cannot provide enough screentime for Hurley..![]()

Great assessment of "Lost" as a highly entertaining popcorn show, Todd. Right on.

Actually, I started watching it in the second week. I was flipping channels and was surprised by how good some of the performances were. I had heard of the show before, but thought it sounded like it was going to be pretty awful. It ended up as must see TV this summer.sportdan30 wrote:Btw, did anyone catch Rockstar, INXS? I caught the last four episodes and surprisingly it was a decent show. I agreed with the choice of whom they chose to lead the band.
My wife and I were both thought JD was the right guy, as well.
Lost was good but not one word about the guys out at sea or the kid.
While they did reveal the hatch, they introduce another mystery, namely the Aussie guy.
So another coincidence piles up since Jack met the guy before his first miracle, where the girl he operated on makes a miraculous recovery from a severed spine.
And the lotto numbers that Hurley explains to Jack gets a "meh" from Jack? They set it up to be a big deal and Hurley won't tell anyone else, because he thinks the numbers are cursed?
BTW, the Aussie guy was obviously out of that geodesic dome within the last 5 years. He could have gotten some CDs, get modern computers and other modern equipment instead of looking like the poster boy for Buckminster Fuller circa 1960.

i enjoyed ty alot but figured he wouldnt make the cut sweet suzie mcneil was just hitting here stride but she was obviously not getting the gig
all though mig was solid he still a little to stage show like
marty was our pick most of the way as he was quite good....we couldnt belive week after week how jd held on...then when he did his original we were very impressed and when i finally heard him do a inxs song shortly after we were 100% on his bandwagon he just nailed the sound of inxs over any others

Yeah, JD's original song, "Pretty Vegas" will certainly be on INXS's new album. I think it's going to be one of their bigger hits, though it's not very INXS sounding. For a while, I too thought Marty was going to win, but JD has a much better stage presence. He definitely looks young, but maybe that's what the band needs. And you're right, he nailed the INXS song in the finale.
Mig was good, but you're right...too much stage show for that guy. I'm not homophobic whatsoever, but at least to me, he came off kinda queer. Great voice though, but not the right sound or look.

That was my wife's, as well as my problem with Ty. When he sang Can't Get What You Want, he sounded like a female gospel singer. What made the song work for the Stones was the contrast of Mick Jagger to the back up gospel singers. JD's version on the finale just blew away Ty's version.sportdan30 wrote:Yeah, JD's original song, "Pretty Vegas" will certainly be on INXS's new album. JD was the obvious choice, but he really annoyed the hell out of the other contestants, and came off very arrogant and cocky. What the rest of the contestants never understood was, that arrogance and cockiness is what makes for a great lead singer. Marty figured it out, but he came off as kind of creepy as he would explain the direction he was going to take the band in.
What set JD apart early on was the way he re-worked songs. California Dreamin' was incredible, as was his version of Joe Cocker's, The Letter. His perfomances began to dip as he tried to play too many mind games with the others when it came to song selection. But from the second week, it was pretty clear JD was their first choice, as long he didn't have a melt down, or become too much of an ass.
The rest were just too nice. Early on, Jordis did a great job on Nirvana's Heart Shape Box, but she smiled through the whole damn song. That is not a happy song! It just rubbed me the wrong way.

I personally thought JD sucked.
His 'original' was cheesy as hell lyrically and that's the only contribution he had to the song. The music from that 'original' song was written by INXS so of course they liked it. Some of his arrangements he did with the covers were horrible as well. I don't even want to get into what he did a few weeks ago to a Nirvana song. It was pure shite though Dave and INXS actually gave him props for it.
He was a total asshole too. I don't like him as a person so I certainly won't want to follow INXS from now on. His Elvis impersonator roots would come through a lot of the time too. At times he sounded like Elvis singing some of the songs. Just terrible. At one point I turned to my wife and said "So that's what it would sound like if Elvis sang for INXS" and she laughed. He did have some good moments, like Money, but they were few and far between to me.
That being said, he was still the best fit for INXS out of the contestants.
Marty is way too good and hip to be a part of INXS. He was head and shoulders above everyone else when it came to the total package (voice, stage presence, attitude, performer) it wasn't even funny. I'd like to see him and Dave Navarro put an album out together. I still, for the life of me, can't get that song Trees out of my head.
Jordis is one hell of a singer and I really hope she puts out an album. I could listen to her sing all day.
Mig wasn't right for INXS either. You could tell the Australian votes kept him in til the end. He has a great singing voice but he was doing what he was meant to do, singing on stage, already. Really nice guy though. He was born too late. He would have been perfect for one of those 80's hair metal bands.
Susie's got a good voice but didn't fit the band either. I actually thought her performance of Bohemian Rhapsody was terrible.
Ty was aboslutely right with what he said when he was voted off. I thought he had an outstanding voice and would love to hear him put something out.
The rest were decent but not memorable. Overall, the show turned out better than I expected and can't wait to see which band they use for the next one.
Edit: Anybody notice that ex-NFL qb Gary Hogaboom is on Survivor this season?

Getting this thread back on topic:
Last night's episode was pretty cool, although it mostly was filler. We got to see what was going on on the raft, how Desmond found Locke, and the "others" are very real.
There wasn't too many surprises with what was going on on the raft, and the showing of a shark was, well, inevitable. I guess it did show that Michael doesn't really hate Sawyer as much as he might make it out.
That Desmond guy just seems really confused at this point and maybe he's not really all as bad as he seems to be. It was interesting when Locke reset the timer that was above the computer, which leads to the question of what the hell does that thing actually do. I'm thinking some sort of security system that would inititiate self destruct or contact an outside source if it runs out. Who really knows? The code for the system was the "numbers". It does seem that Desmond does work for some sort of corporation as he wears a jumpsuit with a logo and one of the panels underground that Jack looked at bears the same logo.
The others seemed pretty damn creepy as they were chasing after Michael, Sawyer, and Jin with clubs, sticks, etc. Seemed very primitive. Maybe these are the diseased and Walt's supposed to hold some sort of key to the cure?
Anyway, in the preview to the next episode they've found survivors from another section of the plane.
I hate waiting for the next episode. I watched the first season on DVD so there wasn't this waiting period. Damn.
