Not sure why you are debating the point i am trying to make which is very basic....Sony is putting a BR drive in every PS3 so that if we want a PS3, we have to have the BR with it. MS is giving 360 owners the OPTION of adding HD-DVD or not adding HD-DVD to our 360. The driving force behind PS3 is BluRay. The driving force behind the 360 is gaming and online gaming.Diablo25 wrote:I'm not being forced to do anything. You are looking at the BR player a bit too much like an add-on though from what I'm seeing. While the whole DVD format war would seem to justify this position, it's also fair to claim that the BR is essential to what PS3 wants to do with their games. Perhaps it will allow developers to put in more content, graphics, who knows....DivotMaker wrote:Not sure why you are debating the point i am trying to make which is very basic....Sony is putting a BR drive in every PS3 so that if we want a PS3, we have to have the BR with it. I used to write it off as well, but I'm starting to think that it might pay off for gamers in the end. I could be wrong- I'm only piecing togehter information here.
You just don't buy the PS3, you buy another console if you don't want to be "forced" to get a Blu-Ray drive.
Looks like there will be no shortage of buyers willing to pay the $600 (or more on eBay) so they don't feel they're "forced."
There's a rumor that they will pack in a Blu-Ray movie or some disc of clips so Sony's is going to force you to take that disc.

I would have if DVD wasn't the clear-cut choice for next-generation movie discs.wco81 wrote:Did you object to the DVD drive in the PS2 as well?
But as a gamer, I'm not a fan of Sony using the PLAYSTATION 3 as the big gun in the HD disc format war. We are probably years away from a victor in this format war (and the answer could be neither HD-DVD or BR), so paying extra for a potentially-useless feature and getting fewer consoles at launch is a pain point for many gamers.
I also find it funny that the leaders of the "true HD" movement aren't even including component cables in either system pack.

I'll tell you what is surprising to me. It's not the fact that the PS3 will obviosuly sell out their launch or that sales on Ebay will reach record $$$ figures.wco81 wrote: Looks like there will be no shortage of buyers willing to pay the $600 (or more on eBay) so they don't feel they're "forced."
It is that someone is willing to pay money for a slip of paper from EB / GS that might get them a console they will have to then pay more money for to purchase.
That is insane in my book.

Hardly...wco81 wrote:I understand perfectly fine.
I have stated repeatedly here that I am sitting out this Playstation launch for the first time ever. WHY? I don't think the PS3 is worth $200 more than a 360 Premium. The BluRay drive is the primary reason that the console is OVERPRICED and LATE. Were Sony offering the $500 unit for $299 without BR, then I would likely be in the game. What you fail to understand is I do not see VALUE in the BR drive at this point in time.wco81 wrote:You want Sony to give you a console with specs and a price that you prefer. That's if you had any intention of considering a PS3 at all in the first place.
I did not buy my first PS2 on launch day because of a DVD drive. I used the PS2 as a DVD once and never used it again when the quality of picture and remote convinced me that it was a poorly conceived product. I later got the XBox and had much better results with that DVD player.wco81 wrote:Did you object to the DVD drive in the PS2 as well?
If you played any PS2 DVD-ROM games, you are using the DVD drive whether you think it's poorly conceived or not.
You should have just stuck to the CD-ROM games from EA the first year or two after PS2 launch.
Likewise, there will be PS3 games with more than 8 GB of content. More than the capacity of dual-laer DVD-ROMs.
So will you boycott those?

The real idiocy is that they're packing Blu-Ray into the $500 system without the capability for HDMI, which will likely be necessary to get true 1080p output (which is the whole point of Blu-Ray).
The launch list is definitely the reason I'm not getting a PS3. If you don't already have a 360, I could see it, but why pay extra for games that likely won't be much different on the PS3?
Really, arbitrary price points are not the issue. It's value. If a $600 system really blew me away, I'd consider purchasing it. Gaming is one of my main hobbies, and spending a few hundred dollars on a new console every 4-6 years isn't too big of a stretch for me. It's still much cheaper than PC gaming.
But the difference here is value. I look at an XBox Premium, and I definitely see $100 of extra value over the XBox (comparing launch prices to launch prices). Wireless controller, component cables included, bigger hard drive, and completely redesigned console and XBL interface, plus HD output on games.
Do I see $200-$300 worth of extra value from the PS2 to the PS3? Definitely not in the case of the $499 model, because of that lack of HDMI. With the $599 model...am I going to really notice $300 worth of difference between Blu-Ray movies and movies on my upscaling Sony DVD player, especially if I don't have a 1080p TV? Hard to say. Plus, considering how expensive the regular Blu-Ray players are, you have to wonder about quality shortcuts Sony is taking with the PS3.

The $500 model has HDMI now. And you could supposedly replace the internal 20 GB drive with a bigger capacity drive yourself.
So the difference between the two SKUs now is bigger drive, built-in Wifi, memory card reader and some cosmetic features on the 60 GB model.
Yeah the launch list doesn't look that interesting. There are games scheduled for March, when they launch in Europe, that looks better. But of course, schedules always slip.

I think I will finish replying to you now because you have chosen to take everything I state out of context to twist it to fit your delusional argument. I DID NOT BUY THE PS2 AS A DVD DRIVE. I BOUGHT IT AS A GAMING MACHINE. I USED THE DVD DRIVE AS A DVD MOVIE PLAYER ONE TIME AND DID NOT CARE FOR ITS PERFORMANCE NOR THE REMOTE'S PERFORMANCE. TRY TWISTING THAT INTO SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT...wco81 wrote:If you played any PS2 DVD-ROM games, you are using the DVD drive whether you think it's poorly conceived or not.

Geezus...I am not "boycotting" anything Mr. Stone. I am choosing not to purchase a product because I do not see its value as beeing worth $200 more than the 360 that I already have. The fact that the BluRay has made the PS3 non-competitive with the 360 as a gaming machine in TODAY'S gaming market means that there is $500-800 less I will need to spend for my HD gaming needs. Excuse the hell out of me if I think Sony has lost their minds with the PS3 launch....wco81 wrote:So will you boycott those?
Geez, for the last time the PS3 that's comparable to the 360 is $100 more, not $200 more. I honestly do think that you believe if you say something enough times, it will come true. You may now continue your weekly blowing a gasket about the PS3... props to wco for giving me a week off and bearing the brunt of his mindless obsession.DivotMaker wrote:I am choosing not to purchase a product because I do not see its value as beeing worth $200 more than the 360 that I already have.

What you consider is comparable is completely irrelevant to me.Kazuya wrote: Geez, for the last time the PS3 that's comparable to the 360 is $100 more, not $200 more.
So you just dropped by to try and start yet ANOTHER meaningless fight because some of us here at DSP don't get on our knees and bow towards Sony and the Land of the Rising Sun every day like you do? How many more warnings from Jared and Scoop to YOU need to quit starting this s***? Pretty obvious it is the ONLY reason you post here...nice contribution.Kazuya wrote:I honestly do think that you believe if you say something enough times, it will come true.
