Euro PS3 launch delayed until Mar 07

Still Nov for USA and Japan, apparently. I'm not sure what the score will be regarding games etc being region free, but I suspect that MS will be quietly chortling at another free run at Xmas, so price cuts and bundles may be in the offing.

"The players come from all over the world, the money from deep underneath the Persian Gulf, but, as another, older City poster campaign put it, this is their city. They may now exist in the global spotlight, but they intend to keep it that way."
Sheesh... any more delays and the PS3 is going to be considered in a different generation than the 360. Interesting that Blu-Ray and not the complexities of the Cell has caused the numerous delays. eBay is gonna be crazy...

Whats more surprising is that they are only launching with 100k in Japan. So the US gets 400k and Japan gets 100k. I just can't believe that is true and if it is then sony is much more concerned about the 360 then they are saying.

From IGN:
By the time I see a PS3 on a store shelf I will probably be on my fifth 360 replacement unit!!
Ouch!"I don't think it's unexpected but I must admit I'm disappointed," said Jon Murphy, marketing manager for Konami UK. "The people who will lose out most are the European consumers, who will again have to wait for months after the US and Japan to get the latest console. Microsoft managed a global launch and the same is expected with the Wii so it's a shame that Sony will not manage to do the same."

I recall Sony babbling something about how they'd be doing a world wide launch, but done right. Something about being on pace to have such and such amount of units being ready to go etc.
Hmmm, same defects that they went through with the PS2 launch production?
You gotta love how each of these companies (all of them, from software to hardware) will flat out lie during the hype phase.

Who knows, but with so few units available at launch, there is far less incentive for publishers to have their games ready for launch now. At some point all of the delays (and frustration with the platform itself) has to erode the faith of publishers and ultimately development support for the PS3 platform. In spite of their arrogance, it seems that Sony is really feeling the pressure to get the PS3 out, however weak the launch may be.
They haven't done a single thing right in quite a while. That Sony mindshare they've been cultivating for the last 10 years in the gaming market better come through for them big time.

If there are only 400,000 units for the NA launch and a half mil worldwide, that's not a launch, that's a desperation move. They're going to take a big hit on the hardware, and that base would have a hard time providing enough software sales to make it profitable.
Can't wait to see how much the bundles will be. They will probably name them after the colleges whose tuition the cost approximates -- this is the Harvard bundle, this is the Michigan bundle...

Could not agree more. $ony's arrogant misinformation campaign regarding PS3 has come back to bite them on the @ss. Had they not been so aggressive in their criticism of M$ and the 360's launch (which was surely a ripe subject), I might not be so glad to see them suffer. I just wish $ony and M$ would focus on getting issues with the systems right BEFORE launch instead of after, because ultimately they lose even more when they don't get it right initially (360's coming back and replacements being shipped at no cost to consumer, etc...).ScoopBrady wrote:Talk about instant karma coming to get you. Sony was extremely vocal about the 360's shortcomings at launch and now their launch is looking to be worse.
Another "feature" they hyped at E3 is how robust their online capabilities and featureset would be and how ultimately it would be better than XBL...for FREE. Not a WORD of this to this point makes me even more skeptical than normal.....
Wouldn't the number of software sales needed to make up the hardware cost be relative to the number of consoles sold? They would still need to average X games sold per console no matter if they sold 4 consoles or 4 million consoles.Brando70 wrote:They're going to take a big hit on the hardware, and that base would have a hard time providing enough software sales to make it profitable.billharris44 wrote:That 400k unit doesn't include component or HDMI cables.

Here is what I don't get. they say they will only have 500k by launch which is Novemeber (supposedly, I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't happen) and we know manufacturing hasn't started. but lets say they start soon. They are going to produce 500k in 1-2 months. but then there going to produce another 750k - 1 million in a month to make their claims of 1.2 million by the end of the year.
Smells like more BS to me, they have really hurth themsleves here. sure if they manage to spit out 500k they will sell and be hot. But all those other holiday buyers who couldn't get one will buy a Wi or 360.

However I still believe this calculation is correct:
$600 + shortage of consoles = doh!
What's the point? It looks like the chain stores like EB will get about 2 or 3 units apiece, if that many. The big box stores like BB might get more, but they have far fewer outlets. What's going to be really interesting is what happens at Fye's or at TRU, where they've been taking preorders for months now. Crazy.wco81 wrote:So who's still going to preorder?
Of course, if you can get your hands on one, I'm sure you'd get a big profit through an ebay sale.
