Racing Sim Thread

I'm actually playing it too, and I think the cars are easier to drive with the assists off than the first one. I get butter-smooth framerate, and my machine is an upper-mid-level system at this point in time I think. I love the driving school. You unlock "Custom" championships as you go through the training sessions one by one. I've unlocked like 10 of them so far in addition to the standard GTR FIA 2003 and 2004 seasons that come stock with the game.
Pretty ridiculously good first impressions.

AMD Athlon64 4000+, 2GB of RAM, and a Radeon X850...nothing all-world, but upper middle of the pack, I would guess.wpw721 wrote:I am looking into purchasing a reasonably priced system that will run GTR 2 and R factor, what are your specs? Terry's machine is a pretty nice gaming rig IMO, If anything the GPU is holding him back now, with all the new cars that have come out in the last few months.
I have a model below his X700 pro and it runs all 3 games reasonably.
On a side note to update about fps and gtr2, I have since been experimenting with race weekend and season and my frames are half what I get in open practice. I know there is some more stuff going on but HALF the fps. Also when it rains I am getting very MINIMAL loss in FPS. I am not sure what the deal is when its race weekend LOL.
I am still liking it a lot and yes, the drving schools are damn fun. Its so addicting I HAVE to get gold on them all LOL.

Terry's rig is middle nowdays with mine slightly below that. There are some ridiculous machines out there today. It's just crazy...two years ago when I built my rig it was top of the line...now it's peanuts. My video card is definitely the bottleneck right now, but I'm not willing to invest in a whole new processor and motherboard since my current stuff is fairly decent (AMD 64 3500+). My X800 Pro is on it's last legs in terms of performance though, so I'll probably have to upgrade to dual core this fall/winter...and then I can replace the video card as well.
And I'm on my way out to Fry's to see if I can find GTR2.

Hey, don't insult the X800 Pro.......
Times like this I wish i had an office for the computer and a big desk to keep my Momo wheel out all the time. Right now our computer is in the bedroom, and I'm usually too lazy to go to the closet and dig out the wheel to play, and then put it back after.......

I am pretty much in the same boat. 1 Fry's, 2 EB's, 1 Best Buy = no luck, and I have the game on pre-order from GoGamer. For the first time ever, they have seemingly failed me.dbdynsty25 wrote:Yeah, I can't find it anywhere, so I'm probably just going to order it online from somewhere. Oh well...only hit up 2 Fry's, a Best Buy, a Circuit City and 3 EB Games. I really need to learn how to use the phone.

PS - Terry and SEMINOLE where did you guys find the game already?
According to a well know poster from CA on RSC:
I've got to cancel my GoGamer order if its really $19.99 at Best Buy. With shipping my GoGamer order was going to be almost twice as much. Once again my impatience gets the better of me (what a dumass)slider916 wrote:Just returned from Best Buy in my area and they have lots in stock.
$19.99 pretty cheap too.
It's on 2 CDs too and not DVD..Not exactly the smartest way of putting the online code on a sticker that's on the plastic tearoff to be thrown away.
I can see alot of online codes being lost this way.

I'm proud to announce the release of Watkins Glen V2. This is Watkins Glen with all 3 track layouts. I hope you all enjoy this as much as, or more than, V1. The track was originally done by RSDG for F1C, and was also converted to GTR by GMilno. Feel free to post any issues here, I will try to take a look at them. There likely will be no further development done on this track, except for crucial bug/fix issues.

Got mine at Best Buy for $19.99 on Wed. - If you want I will pick you up a copy. I cancelled my GoGamer order when they told me they would not have it until next week. Plus it was going to cost me $40 through them.dbdynsty25 wrote:Still haven't found GTR2...anyone else find a place to get it?
wpw721 - Definitely the graphics card. Your system is better than mine on every level but graphics card, however, GTR2 runs pretty well for me at 1024x768 with high detail settings (not full). I have a 128mb nvidia 6600GT AGP that would be considered pretty low entry these days. Anything better than that and you should be in good shape.

Yeah, definitely upgrade the graphics. I picked this card up last week:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814150182
I can now run the GTR2 demo at 1280x1024 with AA and it's butter smooth. My cpu is a bit below yours (3700+ single core) but the rest of the specs are the same.
That card is going to run anything I want to play until DX10 hardware hits next year along side Vista.

I got the review copy from OperationSports, and hopped online with it this weekend a bit. Bunch of Swedes or something that didn't even speak English, every one of them in the Ferrari 575...and I was in a Saleen. Something I must be missing, I guess
.
DEFINITELY easier to control than GTR. There was 11 guys in the race and I had a solid 3rd, until 2nd spun in front of me and took us both out. What was cool was he pulled off to the side until I passed him and then we went to the line (it was in the last 2 corners of a 5 lap race). I took 4th, but I'm definitely not a hot shoe compared to the GTR online crowd. Code was rock-solid through several races, and I still think the "Online Garage" is the most brilliant piece of code to ever come down the pipe for a racing sim.
The cockpits are gorgeous, the sound rocks, the control is tighter than the already-awesome GTR. This thing is ridiculous. I kind of equate it to Nascar 4 vs Nascar Racing 2003. GTR was hardcore, as was Nascar 4. Yet I refuse to believe that Nascar rides are THAT difficult to drive...it was like driving on ice. NR2003 comes out and "eases up" a bit, and yet makes it more realistic. I think that's what GTR2 has done. They made obvious strides to make it appeal to the less hardcore, but I think in making the driving model a bit more predictable, it may end up with tighter racing all the way around, and no sacrifice in realism.

Agree with everything you've stated Terry. There are several groups complaining on RSC that it is now too easy, but I always thought GTR was way too difficult for the cars being modeled. Great Nascar 4 vs NR2003 analogy. I saw this funny quote over on bluesnews.com
I've been busy trying to get a feel for all the different cars in the game. I think there are about 25 different models and hundreds of different liveries. I have been concentrating on one of the new tracks , Zhuhai GP 2004 , which I love the flow of. So far I have done hot laps with 15 of the cars there. All the times suck, but I love trying out the different handling. All these laps were set with default setups. Download my laps and have a go. Even the worst of you should be able to beat them.

I have not even checked out the "Online Garage" yet. What is it?"Absolutely authentic physics" that's completely different to the "Absolutely authentic physics" they claimed the last one had.
CEO Carlo Voelker commented, "We kind of fooled you before, but this time it's really authentic."

Basically, it's an online setup swapper for people like me who don't want to figure out how to use the tylemetry and all of that. I can go into the "Online File" section of the garage and grab a setup from the servers, all integrated within the game. It's easy to upload and download, so no hunting the web for a setup guru's files. It helped a lot with the 575 alone (not a lot of files there yet, for obvious reasons), as the setup there that somebody had uploaded turned much quicker, had less body roll, and improved my lap time around Hockenheim in the car by about 3 seconds on the first pass.
Every racing sim should have a feature like that. Period.
