Hopefully, this will not be intrusive here, but since many SR regulars seemed to have moved here for good, I will use this thread to continue the former SR thread that posted any news, mods, addons, patches, discoveries, etc. as it pertains to racing sims (both PC and console). As always, just ignore this one if you are not into racing sims of any kind.

Link to all old info in the SR Racing Sim Thread

Looks like The Pits Touring Car Championship mod is coming along nicely for the Trans Am Physics in Nascar Racing 2003. It appears they are beta testing now and hopefully should be releasing soon. Check out the pics of the cars running on the old Watkins Glen Road Course as it was in 1948.

They are also working on a 1970 Grand National mod that looks promising.

[ This message was edited by: DChaps on 20-11-2003 10:12 ]

The GPLEA just released version 4.0 of the Eagle-Weslake for Grand Prix Legends. Everytime I think there is no way they can get more detail out of this 5 year old game, these guys prove me wrong. Main changes appear to be body shape (check out the improved 3d nose), more detailed textures, and 3d mirrors and stickshift. Even better still, here is a quote from the GPLEA news section.

Quote:

The driver car with the Belgian GP winner no. 36 & high resolution cockpits will follow within the next days.
It would have been too many options to put them into the original release

Excellent! I have wanted to drive as the #36 for a long time, as Gurney is one of my all time favorites.

PS - Apparently Gurney was on Wind Tunnel (Speed TV call in show) this past week and I missed it. Anyone catch it or have a copy? I heard he got choked up talking about Jimmy Clark.

[ This message was edited by: DChaps on 23-11-2003 13:42 ]

Oh, man, I´d love to see that show with Gurney. Clark is my all-time motorsports idol.

Remember what Clark´s dad said to Gurney at Jim Clark´s funeral: "You know, Dan, you were the only driver who Jimmy truly feared ... "

That´s pretty heavy praise for one of the most underrated American drivers -- hell, drivers, period -- of all time. Gurney belongs just a step below the Sennas, Prosts, Fangios, Andrettis, Foyts, Mosses, Graham Hills, Earnhardt Srs., Michael Schumachers, Clarks, Jackie Stewarts and Richard Pettys of the racing world, but he never seems to get his proper due.

Take care,
PK

[ This message was edited by: pk500 on 23-11-2003 17:05 ]

I wish I had kept it on the Tivo. I would have made vhs dubs for you guys. Anyway, with Wind Tunnel on hiatus for the offseason, they are re-airing the best interviews for two weeks.

I recall seeing Dan Gurney´s name on the list. What I don´t recall is what day the interview is running.

Ahh the temptation to hook up the wheel again and update GPL (which is probably my favorite sports game ever). Been a while but I think it may be calling me back. Must resist. Too much to do. No time. Must. Fight....

Don, I´ve got to bring my GPL installation up to date once again. It´s been neglected while I´ve been working so much overtime. This does sound exciting! Thanks for bringing us up to date.

Looks like The Pits Touring Car Championship mod for Nascar Racing 2003 is now available for download!!

That is great that they got this out before Thanksgiving, as for once I will be at home with "a little" free time on my hands. This looks like it will be a great mod for the racing sim community.

Quote:

TPTCC is now an Open Source Mod! They also have an updated version of Norisring for racing with the TPTCC mod. If you have NR2003, go get this thing now.

Project Wildfire has just released Mosport International Raceway for Nascar Racing 2003.

Of course this should work well with The Pits Touring Car Championship mod which has already seen some updates inlcuding the Cleveland track and some nice new dashes and gauges.

Here is a picture of me thrashing the Corvette from the TPTCC mod around the new Mosport.

Holy Cow Don!! This Touring Car mod is fantastic! I am totally stoked by the quality. This is the Daddy of all mods, IMO! I downloaded the Norisring track while I was at it, and the Bull Run car pack. This is another one of those career games... and it´s a mod, of all things!

I can´t thank you enough for putting us on to it... don´t miss this one guys!

Don,

I´m now hearing that this mod is still in beta form, and that what´s being linked to here was leaked. What have you heard about this? I´m enjoying the heck out of it as it is, but I´m wondering what else is left before it´s "official".

Hmm... Did not hear that it was unofficial or leaked, but it is the first release. Additional releases will offer more car models, and more tracks from what I hear.

Since there is an official TPTCC site for it and the forum links above contained press releases from The Pits founder Jan Kohl and longtime member Uncle Goy, I assume that everything is on the up and up.

Keep in mind, this TPTCC mod is not to be confused with the Project Wildfire Trans Am mod for NR2003 that will try to accurately reflect the 2003 Trans Am series.

Where did you hear it was "leaked"?

Don, I now think I was reading an older news post at one of the websites that came up in a history search. Apparently, there was a leak of an earlier beta. The one up on the Pits website is indeed legit! Have you tried the Norisring track? I liked it pretty well, but I can´t figure out how to setup these cars though... especially for this track!

Two great new tracks have just been released. The first is Oulton Park for Nascar Racing 2003 by Madcowie. Check it out here.

The second is the long awaited Lakeside track for Grand Prix Legends by Madcowie, Jim Pearson and Robert Hunter. This track is really well done, and even if you don´t have Grand Prix Legends, check out the site for some really nice history and pictures about the actual track and the 1967 race.

[ This message was edited by: DChaps on 01-12-2003 08:01 ]

It looks like Project Wildfire may be close to releasing their Trans Am mod for Nascar Racing 2003, as they have just posted a features list on their news page.

Quote:

- Models: Chevrolet Corvette, Dodge Viper, Ford Cobra Mustang, Jaguar XKR

- Vertex Damage and 10 Levels of Detail (LOD) providing excellent collision representation and graphical detail while maximizing frame rates.

- Models are scaled so that collision detection is as accurately portrayed as possible for online multiplayer games. Depending on latency, there may be slight morphing of one car into another before physical contact is made.

- Trans Am type physics including different tire & aero models, weight, horsepower, torque, RPM´s, suspension & steering geometry, and 6 speed gearbox.

- Trans Am cockpits including custom dashboard, gauges, switches, steering wheel, driver orientation, mirror perspective, chassis/roll cage, shifter knob, ventilation hoses, and other cockpit items.

- Enhanced windshield reflections of objects in the cockpit.

- Two Selectable cockpits

- Ability to have separate wheel colors per model (Built into each model´s template.)

- Rollbar color is derived from the base template color.

- Wheels and BF Goodrich tires have multiple LOD´s to increase framerates and are textured for low, medium, and high speeds.

- Wheels and tires also have enhanced damage, white lettering can be rubbed off and tires look marred.

- Each model now has it´s own shiny map (Allows external light sources to display correctly on each model.)

- Over 20 Trans Am series drivers and teams are represented. Additionally, Project Wildfire fictional and default multiplayer cars are provided.

- External Sound Swapper tool (Allows you to pick Trans Am engine and transmission sounds and starts the sim. Starting the sim without using the Sound Swapper tool will retain the original NASCAR Cup sounds)

- Pace Car: Convertible Camaro

Known Issue: While driving, all cars will appear to be at the correct ride height. However, when viewing the player car from a replay or out of cockpit view, the player car may appear to sit too low.

There is also a nice movie available showing off this mod under the PWF Movies section of their website.

The forums over at RaceSim Central are buzzing with rumor and speculation that the 1965 Mod for Grand Prix Legends is also nearing release.

[ This message was edited by: DChaps on 29-01-2004 16:35 ]

The new Brands Hatch is out for Grand Prix Legends. This has been a long time coming, and it looks like considerable attention to detail has gone into this project. Check it out!

Bob Stanley of Project Wildfire has just posted the following in their forums:

Quote:

For those that haven´t noticed, the FAQ button on the main page works. I´ve tried to answer the most frequently asked questions but I´d be happy to take input for anything I might´ve left off. Not guarranting it´ll be answered but I´ll listen

As far as the PTA mod goes... I believe stanmart and a few others nailed it when they mentioned that it´s not about getting something out as quickly as possible, it´s about getting a road course type mod out that is feature rich and of the best quality we can provide. Personally, I´m extremely pleased with what the team has accomplished. The list of features which has grown even more since being published on the main page is quite significant I think. The guys have done some things that were previoulsy not thought possible even by the experts. Some of the credit for that is the fact that we´re taking the time to experiment and not tied to a hard time line.

Having said that, I guess we can upgrade "coming soon" to "coming very very soon"

For those out there that would rather see us work on NASCAR related tracks and mod´s; we´re not done yet. There is more to come but in the mean time you have a lot more to ´play´ with than folks that enjoy road racing. I would venture to say that some of the things we have learned making the PTA mod will probably find thier way into updates of the other mod´s. That´s not a promise at this point, just a probability.

Regards,
Bob

I like the sound of coming very very soon. Click here for a direct link to the FAQ here refers to.

Just a heads up, I noticed over at EBGAMES, they are currently selling Nascar Racing 2003 for $9.99

http://www.ebgames.com/ebx/product/232168.asp

That is a steal for what is arguably the best overall PC racing sim of all time (multiplayer, physics, AI, damage model, etc.)

Yes, its just Nascar out of the box, but with the free patch, the free Mods, the free tracks, etc. its worth 10 times that price.

This truly is a steal Don; I can´t believe such a quality product is already marked down to such a ridiculously low price. IMO, it is the best overall race simulation of all time! I still love Grand Prix Legends, but it didn´t have the out of the box multiplay player capability of NASCAR 2003.

BTW, I saw it at Comp USA for this price this past weekend.
