Zeppo wrote:Well, as a Redskins fan, those two playoff games this season that you seem to forget were huge and had been a long time coming. Maybe they weren't important enough playoff games for others, or something, but I remember them well.

The goal now is to win the division (one hopes this season every team in the division will get an equal number of home and away games), and get a playoff game at home.

What big-time free agents did the Skins go after last year? What top players at their position did they target? Gibbs being in charge makes a very big difference as to the offseason strategy of the Skins. Besides paying Moss a multi-year deal that everyone thought was ridiculously out of bounds (in order to move the disgruntled Coles and his bad toe), they didn't do much last offseason except shore things up with depth. This year, the coaches know what areas they need to address, what specific players they want, and the Danny pulls out all the stops and signs 'em up, assist to Gilbert and the Wizards beating the Pistons on the 'boys night out.'
OK, so now they played 2 playoff games last year. Heh, that's how memorable they were to me, I didn't even remember them, and one was against the Seahawks :) Still, wheen was the last time they won a playoff game prior to 2005?

Didn't they sign Springs and Brunell in recent years? They've had much better luck in trades, getting Protis and Moss than they have had in signing meaningful free agents.

Over the past 5 years the Redskins have left the impression on me that they have a habit of overpaying FAs.

Pre-Gibbs, and you are right on. the Danny made his big splash in the offseason after Norville's group, led by Brad Johnson, won the Division and beat the Lions in the WC round. Then they went down to Tampa and lost a really, really close one. That was 98 I think, the year the Rams won the whole thing, I believe.

Anyway, that was the year the Danny tried to play Fantasy Football with the team and signed Bruce Smith, Jeff George, Deion, etc.

Shottenheimer cut all the fat and fixed all the cap problems, but then he was gone after one. Spurrier came in, and the inmates were in charge of the prison for a while.

Since Gibbs cam back, they haven't been too active in free agents, at least they haven't been in the game for the big names, but they have gotten some key guys that way. Springs, Griffin, Daniels, Marcus Washington, I'm pretty sure they were all FA siginings. They got Thrash back as a FA, and Patten last year. Brunell was a trade of draft picks, and Moss was a trade of sorts for Coles, but they gave him a new deal right when they got him. Portis was a trade for Champ Bailey. So, they haven't been too wild in the FA market the last couple of seasons, though they have gotten a lot of very key players. This year is essentially the same, but they went after the big fish in Randle El, instead of guys a little more under the radar. But hey, this year they feel they needed a WR, two years ago it was an OLB and a D Tackle.

So for the fans, it's the best situation. the Danny has his wooing ways (hey, I'll send my jet down to pick you up and bring you to town! Don't sweat it!), and Vinny Cerato is under the command and control of the very good minds in the massive coaching staff who seem to be targeting who they think they need.

I tell ya, when Gibbs came in and made that huge trade of draft picks for Brunell, and paid him that big contract, people though he was nuts. Maybe he was (it looked like it that first year), but it worked out OK last year. Brunell only has a few years left, so one hopes Campbell develops rapidly. But my point is, it was very clear right away that Gibbs was making the decisions, that Brunell was his guy. Gibbs was the only guy, it seemed, who really felt that a new veteran QB was a need for the team, and definitely the only guy in the league who thought Brunell could still play at a high level.

So it looks pretty good from here that Gibbs and his staff are in control and the Danny isn't going off sigining people willy-nilly, and then saddling his coach with unwanted players, like he did to Norv. I certainly can't complain, if they can keep all these guys for more than a couple of years (doubtful; surely some will have to be cut for cap reasons). And maybe every team does, but the Skins seem to restructure the same guys' deals every year it seems. Like I said, losing Arrington is a big hit for a fan, but he did open up a lot of cap space.

The good news for Steelers' fans is that the entire starting lineup, except for Townsend (McFadden ready to step in) and Taylor, is signed at reasonable prices for at least the next 2 years.

Geeze, what got into the Browns? Savage has been flinging cash all over the place this week:

-Willie McGinest
-LeCharles Bentley (hometown kid from St. Ignatius HS)
-Joe Jurevicious (another local kid from Lake Catholic HS)
-Ted Washington
-Kevin Shaffer
-Dave Zastudil

I like it! :)

I hate to admit it, but I think those are good pickups for the Browns as well. Is Winslow expected to make a full recovery this year?

Yeah, but he'll probably have a rollerblading accident...ruining his season again.

Between Winslow and Braylon Edwards, they're both supposed to make full recoveries, but I guess we'll be really lucky if either one of them is ready to go by opening day. :(

T.O. to the Cowboys. That should be interesting...seeing as how they have a statue for a quarterback. I'm sure TO will love all the sacks Drew takes.

Damn, I was kind of hoping that he'd destruct an AFC team this time around. Oh well, at least I already hate the Cowboys so it's a good fit.

What's more interesting is to see if the Cowboy fans embrace him or still hate him for the infamous star celebration.

Cowboy fans are already on the guy's jock and defending him. "T.O. never hurt anybody!" LOL ok. These were the same people that killed him everyday after the star celebration and when he was an Eagle.

Not the signing I would do if I ran the Broken Back Cowboys of Valley Ranch Mountain  T.O. at this stage should only be your final piece of the puzzle. The Eagles were at that stage. Not the 'Boys. They have too many holes on their team. Spending dough on a cancer like Owens is a bad move, IMO.

Cowboy fans defending a nutcase...wow, what a surprise. Thank goodness there are a faction of them that actually don't like this move.

This could turn into a nightmare, which equals great soap opera material for the rest of us :D

You had Jerry Jones, that weasel...Owens, which is self-explanatory...and that lil' slimeball Drew "Miami" Rosenhaus.

And then having that gotdamn Dallas star in the background!!!

I swear to you...it looked liked Satan, Death and Damien were sitting there and smiling after coming to an agreement to destroy the world.

same s***, different site. Yes, Philly was one player away and what did that get them? TO did his job in the Super Bowl, so obviously then needed more than one guy. You sound like another bitter Eagles fan whose team when from sugar to s*** in one year.

Say what you will about TO and his agent but Jerry Jones is Top 3 when it comes to the best owners in the league. Not to mention he led the charge in getting the new CBA deal done.

I'm on board with the signing. If it turns out to be a bad deal. Oh well. This is basicallly a 1 year, 10 million dollar deal. Next year and the year after are option years as he'll have roster bonuses due next March. As long as he behaves, he'll get his money. That was all it was about in Philly. Jerry is giving him his money as long as he produces on and off the field.

Why do you have to come over here and get on my nerves? Stay away from me!

The 'Boys are not in the same place the Eagles were. Plain and simple, baby. Just because McNabb had a bad game and Reid made him throw the ball 50 kabillion times doesn't mean they needed one more player than Owens. The Eagles played against the best coaches in the league and the best QB in football. Only great coaching could've maybe stolen that game and well...Andy Reid is not a superior coach. He's also an arrogant bastard to think that running the ball should be an afterthought.

The 'Boys are not good enough, even with Owens. They aren't going to a Super Bowl until they fix that more important holes they need to fill. T.O. is just a fancy, cancerous band-aid, baby.

LOL...there is a poll at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette asking if the Cowboys made a mistake signing T.O. and the leading vote getter is "don't care."

Unless you live in the metroplex, there is no way you can comprehend the weirdness that the Owens signing has brought on. While Owens was universally loathed throughout the NFL, no team's fans can touch the distaste for Owens that the Cowboys fans had.

I personally don't really care, free agency shocked me a decade ago when the Cowboys signed Deion after he helped the 49ers kick our butts on the way to the Super Bowl. That and Rodman on the Mavs for his brief run. After that, free agency can't faze me any more.
