OT: NFL offseason thread

Post by ScoopBrady »

With as many football nuts as we have around here I'm surprised we don't have one of these going. We have the Marv Levy thread but there's been so much else going on this past week to with nary a discussion.

Childress hired as Vikings head coach
Edwards traded to Chiefs for 4th-round pick
Brees needing surgery
Alexander is MVP
Cadillac Williams is Offensive Rookie of the Year
Shawne Merriman is Defensive Rookie of the Year
There are currently 17, 436 coaching vacancies in the NFL

Urlacher has been amazing. His vast improvement in shedding blocks this year has been key to the Bears defensive surge.

As for the low pick for Edwards, that makes me think he was on the cutting block and the Jets just took an opportunity to get something for him. I'm not sold on him. Like his fire, but he reminds me of Jim Mora (Sr.) a bit, maybe too emotional to deal with the pressure cooker of being a head coach.

I think Dungy will get Coach of the Year. He's certainly worthy of it, but I think Mike Shanahan getting 13 wins out of Jake Plummer and a RB by committee approach makes him more deserving. The Seahawks schedule was a bit too easy for Holmgren to get it, and as much as I'd love to see Lovie Smith win it, it's hard to put him ahead of coaches who won more games and played a tougher schedule in the AFC.

With all due respect to a fine man who underwent an unimaginable loss, if Dungy wins Coach of the Year, it will be a sympathy vote. With the talent Indy has, it should have won 13 or 14 games. I'm not surprised one bit at the Colts' record this season.

My vote for Coach of the Year goes to Lovie Smith. I don't care what kind of schedule the Bears play -- did anyone outside of the most hardcore Bears' fan expect that team would be 11-5 and winning the Central, especially with the two-headed QB of Orton and Grossman?

Shanahan would get consideration from me, too, as would Jack Del Rio in Jacksonville. Both of those guys stretched their talent further than Dungy did, in my opinion.

Take care,

Joe Gibbs, Lovie Smith, Nick Saban, Mike Shanahan, Marvin Lewis, Jon Gruden, Tom Coughlin, and Jack Del Rio.

You can make a great case for all of the above, over Tony Dungy.

Martz is supposedly going to get an interview with the Saints. New Orleans fans have suffered a lot over the years, and especially last year. But it might be interesting to see Martz develop the QB they draft at #2, or Adrian McPherson for that matter.

Bears D coordinator Ron Rivera will soon be hired away by either the Packers or the Rams. Rams also are considering Mike Zimmer from the Cowboys, the O coordinator from the Dolphins (Lenihan), along with Tim Lewis. Lenihan would be a huge mistake, but I like Rivera and Zimmer.

I also vote Lovie Smith as head coach of the year. He's done a remarkable job in just his second year. He just doesn't seem to fit that tradition rich Bears coach. Still, how can anyone root against him. What a stand up guy.

I do think Martz will give them or which ever team hires him a quick fix, a short burst, but over the longhaul everything will turn to crap.

Great offensive coordinator...Terribe Head coach.

I agree 100% on both counts...

I want Rivera on the Rams and Lovie is My coach of the year.

Parcells to stay put in Dallas. He just signed a 2-year extension according to ESPN bottom line.

I really hope Rivera doesn't get any offers just yet. I'd love another year or two with him as the DC before he inevitably moves on.

Dont think it will hurt Bears...Its Lovies system...but sure as hell would help Rams...
Rams went from leading league in forced turnovers Lovies last year to setting an NFL record for fewest the next year...With 10 of 11 D starters returning...

It certainly is...even though they were the hottest team the last half of the year. Oh well...maybe next year they won't be on the couch watching the playoffs like I am.

Saban definitely impressed me in the second half of the season. Beating the Chargers in San Diego really f***ed up their season. Some stability at the quarterback position and the Dolphins are in the playoffs next year.

And for the record, the only reason I started the thead even though the playoffs are still going on is because there's so much going on now with the teams whose seasons are over.

Lovie Smith gets AP Coach of the Year award. Obviously I felt he deserved it but it's nice to see that the AP felt the same way. After they started the season 1-3 Lovie said in a meeting with his coaching staff that they'd all be laughing about it at the end of the year when they were the NFC North Division Champs. Some of his challenges are questionable in my mind but he sure knows how to prepare his team. Now let's see how far this dream season will last.

WAtching Inside the NFL and they're showing highlights from the Giants-Raider games.

Gets to the part where Raiders are down 9 with the ball inside the 5. The Giants hold and stuff the big package of OL and backs.

You see Moss pointing at the coaches and shouting "You don't never take playmakers off the field."

Oh well the coaching staff is gone.

Al Davis and Randy Moss. Which coach wants to sign up?

You can't depend on turnovers happening every year. This year, the Bengals are one of the top teams in turnover ratios. They have a ball-hawking defense. But lets see if they're defensive front is tough enough in the playoffs.

Who drafted all those first-round defensive linemen who didn't pan out? Martz or the front-office? Rams defense had a bigger problem being soft than not getting turnovers.

As far as I now Martz had final say...you know sorta turn the entire thing over to one egomaniac...This is why there was much tension. The other guys upstairs got sick of his arrogance.

The team got a bit softer when Martz took over...they turned to complete mush when Lovie left and Martz gave the job to close personal friend...

The window has closed on that team...They will probably blow for a while...but at least they will have a timeout when they get to the final 2 minutes of a close game...

Martz said this morning he wouldn't take a coordinator's job.

"Not to sound arrogant" was how he started his reply.

According to the Houston Chronicle, Vince Young is declaring for the NFL draft.

http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/3573146.html

Could go to the Saints but more likely to go to the Titans. Steve McNair is sort of a mentor for Young and is obviously reaching the end of his career. I'm a fan of Jeff Fisher and think this would be a great move for the Titans.
