I was struck by how polite the ladies are when they go to the penalty box.
I'm so used to seeing the NHL guys go in there, throw their gloves down, kick their sticks, SLAM the door shut, and then leap up and cuss out whoever happens to skate by.
The ladies just go in there and quietly take their seats like they're preparing for Sister Rosa Marie's third-grade spelling class, in some cases their feet dangling because their legs aren't long enough for their feet to reach the floor.

Nah, they're just happy because BDunn is going to slide them the beef when they return home from Torino.lexbur wrote:I was struck by how polite the ladies are when they go to the penalty box.

After his designated driver took his skis, he had to use whatever skis he could find.bdunn13 wrote:Zlax45 wrote:Alot of the Women's hockey players are hideous...There are always exceptions to the rule.
Anyone see that joke Bode Miller?? He tried some new skis on his Olympic Downhill run and ended up coming in 5th. Smart move Bode!!
I never heard why. What was the logic behind the new skis?
The new skis where suppose to be faster from what I got out of the broadcast.bdunn13 wrote:Zlax45 wrote:Alot of the Women's hockey players are hideous...There are always exceptions to the rule.

Also, Nice job by Apollo Ohno

I really have no problem with the USA team but I have a problem with how NBC tries to make these athletes better then they are.
Wow, Bode sure has developed quite an anti-fanbase from what I've seen here and heard around the office. The guy finished 5th--it isn't like he fell or finished dead last. The other American was favored over him and he did beat the Herman-ator.
Ohno slipped up, but in that sport, sh*t happens.
The media is all over those guys for not making a big deal out of losing. So what? They both have two more events. The last thing I'd want is for them to mentally beat themselves up and lose confidence before they get after it next time.
Yes, I'm a Bode apologist.

There's no way Miller would have won the downhill even if he skied his best. Deneriaz put up a run for the ages, beating Walchhoffer by seven-tenths. That's an eternity in ski racing, like winning an auto race by a lap.
Walchhoffer has been the world's best downhiller this season, so that's really something for Deneriaz to spank him and the rest of the field like that.
Everyone else was skiing for second, including Bode. He knew that, which is why he seemed non-plussed about his run.
Plus you have to understand the ethos of downhill ski racing. These aren't NFL players, banging their heads against lockers or slamming pads before and after competition. These guys put their lives on the line EVERY SINGLE TIME they leave the start house, so I think there's a sort an eye-in-the-storm mentality as they start their run, finishing their final mental preparations before launching down the hill.
Take care,
PK

Yep, she's not a looker. But I respect the hell out of her for being good enough to be an Olympian after having a kid.Danimal wrote:Pk selectively picked out the one or two good photos of those particular women. go look at a bunch of shots of them. Or better yet go look at jenny Potter <shudder>
Plus, what U.S. women's Olympic team is filled with hot chicks? Hoops? Nope. Track? Nope. Skiing? Nope. Snowboarding? Nope. Swimming? Nope.
All I care is that these girls can play. And they most certainly can.
Take care,
PK

They hit. The US women were getting racked with penalties when I was watcthing.wco81 wrote:Do the women do a lot of hitting or is it more like grass hockey, they just move the puck aroundand shoot all the time?
Is 5:3 the worse it can be? I thought the US had women in a que ready to go sit down as soon as another woman got out of the box.
They are not allowed to body check. They get penalties for it.wco81 wrote:Do the women do a lot of hitting or is it more like grass hockey, they just move the puck aroundand shoot all the time?
"Body contact, but no bodychecking
For new fans used to watching the men, there'll be some differences. The most obvious will be that bodychecking is not allowed, although that doesn't mean there won't be contact.
Hitting and bodychecking are penalty-worthy offences in women's hockey. (Photo: Elsa Hasch/Getty Images) "You're going to see a lot of contact and physical play without penalties, but you're not going to see the typical lowering of the shoulder to remove the puck," says Page.
According to the International Ice Hockey Federation rules, the main difference between body contact and bodychecking is that in the former there is an attempt to play the puck first.
Accidental checks or contact between two players heading in the same direction also fall under the definition of body contact, and are not penalized. But if a player is called for bodychecking, she'll receive a two-minute minor penalty. "

I've always wondered how they compare to guys... to see the relative skill level of these girls, vs guys... checkout this:
http://www.hockeycanada.ca/5/6/2/3/index1.shtml
And on the left side under statistics, click on "NWT vs. Midget AAA"
I've been following Team Canada and there was no hitting period. It was like David & Goliath vs Italy. It might change in the later rounds with more skillfull teams and USA of course.wco81 wrote:Do the women do a lot of hitting or is it more like grass hockey, they just move the puck aroundand shoot all the time?
In terms of coverage, I know NBC has been getting footage from CBC for different events and when it comes to Hockey you can be assured that they won't cut gamepay here and there with the CBC. So those of you with a satellite dish try the CBC coverage if you don't want to miss any action.
I don't know, PK, they are almost impossible to score onpk500 wrote:Nah, they're just happy because BDunn is going to slide them the beef when they return home from Torino.lexbur wrote:I was struck by how polite the ladies are when they go to the penalty box.

A couple of the U.S. women's curlers are cute in a "girl next door" kind of wholesome way. But deep down, they probably like the rock in the dirt chute, too.
