Torino 06

Are you fellas following the Winter Olympics? Big thing here in Asia as I am winding down my business trip and wait for boarding. The inaugural ceremony was impressive IMO, from the lightening of the flame and fireworks to the spinning of that impressive red Ferrari.

Good rendition of "Imagine" by P. Gabriel.

M. Kwan won't see her chance at a medal as she pulls out. Tough luck.

I think the coverage is horrible. You can't even look at ESPN.com or watch any ESPN tv because they are constantly updating the medals and stuff like that...a smooth 12 hours before you get to watch the actual events. They should just show the sh*t Live at whatever time it is...then replay it later. Not being able to touch the internet all day because you are going to find out who wins is ridiculous.

I don't know where is the competition when you score 17 and 12 goals a game. I guess it'll be between the US-Canada as usual.

Absolutely. I can't go to ESPN.com, CNN.com, or any other general news site that puts a sports section on their front page. When I got in the car this morning, the talk station was talking about the results that we'll see tonight. Great...way to take the excitement out of it.

NBC's coverage is generally terrible due to the cheesy-*ss human interest stories they run.

Other than that, I'm loving the Olympics. More HD than ever before, which makes it more interesting for me to watch some events that I wouldn't typically watch.

Really looking forward to the events that weren't ruined for me tonight.

Seeing the athletes try to gain an edge on each other on the long track speedskating is great on HD.

They must be trying to reserve coverage for prime time.

Because to air it live it would be early morning out on the West Coast.

But they're supposedly showing some of it on USA and Universal HD channels too.

Of course...more viewers means more advertising money. But then again, people don't tend to watch competitive events when they already know the outcome. At least I don't watch them.

I'll watch the downhill, the ski jump and maybe some of the luge or bobsled.

You know Sportscenter won't show enough from just the highlights.

Because, NBC will not allow anyone to show highlights even after the evnts have been shown.

Yes, USA, CNBC, and MSNBC are showing events but the events are like Curling (starts tomorrow), Women's Hockey which is just pathetic if the USA and Canada are not playing against each other.

Could not care less. The olympics lost me when they started having one set every two years and opened it up for pros to play. Since then I think I've watched a total of 10 minutes.

I'm recording a good four to five hours of coverage per day and zipping through to find the events I like, which is a lot of stuff. I plan to watch as many men's hockey games as possible, since this basically is the World Cup of hockey, the absolute peak of the sport in terms of collected talent.

AWESOME!

I love the Winter Olympics, if you couldn't tell. :)

Take care,

Gotta love the super slo-mo camera on the downhill course.

Those skiers have some serious stones.

The camera work for the downhill was top notch. As noted, the super slo-mo shots and the time lapse sequence with Aamodt (?) added a lot for the viewer.

The commercial interruptions were pretty ridiculous though. The worst example was commercials-short human interest story on Daron Rahlves-1.5 min of action-more commercials sequence. PK has it right by zipping through a recorded version. For a company that lost $8B in 2005, Chevrolet sure seems to have a heavy ad budget for the Olympics.

When was the downhill on?

I'm only seeing speed ski jump, snowboard on the half pipe and skating.

The Gold Medal winner from 4 years ago just failed to qualify for the medal round.

Damn missed it.

You would think the Downhill is the signature event for the Winter games, just like the 100 meter sprint is for the Summer games.

So why not build up to it, a week in or so?

Instead, ESPN keeps doing this Michelle Kwan story to death. Boring.

She never won the gold so she will likely be forgotten. But she's going to have a lucrative career with the skating tour or whatever it is people waste time watching.

I'm sure they'll screw up hockey coverage again. Show the first 5 minutes, break away for some curling, come back in the second period after 3 goals were scored, break away 10 minutes later for some ice dancing, come back 45 minutes later with 2 minutes left in the game.

Why in the hell can't they show an entire game?! It's even tape delayed and they don't.

The downhill has been the first men's alpine event of the Olympics for as long as I can remember watching them, and the first I remember was Sapporo in '72.

I agree with you, though. But the protocol always has been to run the men's downhill first. Sort of like starting the NASCAR season with the Daytona 500, I guess. Blow your wad early.

CNBC has been showing entire women's games, so I would hope it would do the same for men. What we might get is live coverage of complete games in the morning (Eastern time) on CNBC and then taped snippets during the prime-time highlight-a-thon from 7-11:30 p.m. each night.

Take care,

US Womens hockey team very impressive. They work the puck around and cycle...cycle......cycle! They really play a nice game. The always find the open "man". Be interesting to see how they do against tougher competition.
