I like Jauron but he sure didn't do very well in Chicago. Maybe a second chance will do him good.

The only reasonable explanation is that Levy REALLY wanted the HC job and he figures that if he can't have it now, he can launch Dickie J after a 1-6 start and assume the reigns

The good news for Bills fans, you have a 99.9% chance of not seeing the Bills lose the Super Bowl any time soon

Seriously, how can you look at Jauron and think, "That's our guy." Nice guy, I wish he would succeed, but he just doesn't seem to have what it takes to be a head coach.

There are so many open jobs and only so many coordinators available that it's inevitable there will be retreads hired.

True, but I would have preferred the retreaded Sherman to the retreaded Jauron.

At least Sherman had a track record of more than one winning season.

Sully is an alumnus of the Binghamton Press & Sun-Bulletin, where I used to be a reporter. But he left the paper before I arrived there in the mid-80s.

Exactly, PK. I don't think Sherman was a very good strategist, but his record showed he could get a lot out of his teams. Jauron was saddled with some terrible personnel decisions from the front office (Enis, McNown), but he still was a bad coach. Indecisive, too mild, just not cut out for a job like that. I understand the instinct not to hire a coordinator, but why give the job to a guy who did a poor job in Chicago and also didn't do much to distinguish himself in Detroit? I will never understand how people that eat and breathe football can continue to make decisions like this.

Jim Haslett signs a 3 year deal as the defensive coordinator for the St. Louis Rams. I have mixed emotions about his hire. For one, he used to call the Rams "soft" which they were. Then again, we were pretty bitter rivals against the Saints for a few years.

He didn't do exceptionally well with the Saints, though their offense was rather enemic and put the defense on its heels.

I think he'll be a great assett to Linehan as Haslett obviously has experience being a former head coach.

I'm confident Haslett can do a much better job than Martz's buddy, Larry Marmie.

My 6 year old nephew would have done a much better job than that idiot.

Im happy with the hire...also nice to see a guy take an assistants job when its clear that thats what he is...(Martz needs a house to fall on his head)
He called the Rams soft I think in response to Martz in 2000 saying that they would beat their ass.

As for how soft they were...that was a reflection of the super genius.
In 1999 they were not soft...

Isn't Steve Fairchild the new offensive coordinator in Buffalo? He didn't exactly do such a great job of play calling once Martz had to step away from the game. This hire would not excite me in the least!

Martz is interviewing for the Raiders head coaching job. Yeah, I can see him and Al Davis getting along.

Not sure if it's been mentioned yet but ESPN's MNF will feature J. Theisman ,Tony Kornheiser and Mike Tirico. That would leave Al Michaels and Madden going to NBC.

Davis probably wasn't offering enough money to put up with his meddling and undermining ways.

From an OC getting his first HC job, the situation on the field isn't that bad. A lot of offensive talent on the Raiders.

But no doubt he would have had to deal with a lot of politics, from the owner to the big egos on the roster.

Whisenhunt is 44 and has only been an OC for a couple years. He's young enough to wait for a better offer than the Raidahs. Cowher shows no sign of burnout but he's been in the job for a long time. If Whisenhunt can position himself as Cowher's successor, that's an infinitely better situation than anything Oakland can offer.

I have no idea where Al is going to end up with. Whisenhunt and Petrino have bowed out. Haslett, Martz and Saunders have other gigs lined up as well. I suppose Mike Sherman is a candidate although Oakland and Green Bay couldn't be more different. Bringing back someone like Art Shell wouldn't sell many tickets or inspire hope.

ESPN.com reported that Louisville coach Bobby Petrino also turned the Raiders down Wednesday night and that Art Shell is the leading candidate to take over. Glad to see Whisenhunt stay at least another year. As for Cowher I have heard that the Steelers may extend his contract this offseason, he will be here for a good while longer.

The thing is, he's known for the gadget plays but is he the guy who developed Rothlisberger?

That guy deserves a lot of credit, although Rothlisberger makes a lot of plays by improvising to get away from pressure.

But when he was on his hot streak before the SB, he had his timing down, especially up the middle.
