Tremendous episode last night! Ecko is quickly becoming my favorite character on the show. Very interesting background info on Ecko. I loved it when he stared down the "Black Smoke" creature.
Couldn't agree more Diablo. Just like when he was on Oz, his character is completely engrossing. Although part of me wanted him to take that "Jesus Club" to Charlie's head last night.

Question about the "black smoke". Based on the premise that these people are trapped on this island to right the wrongs from their past, are we to assume that this black smoke signifies their past and his "staring down" of it last night, and it's retreat, are to mean that Ecko is willing to face his demons so to speak? OR does the smoke signify something more evil and his faith in God caused the "creature's" retreat.

Just wondering what you thought.

It's killing me that we didn't see the rest of that final sentence that "Walt" wrote to Michael. Next weeks episode looks fantastic.

"This is our island..."

Can't wait 'till next week.

BTW, people in the Lost forum(abc.com) are saying the black smoke had some images of a cross on a hill, a nigerian woman, the man that young Eko killed etc etc.

All I saw lightning. Anyone noticed any of this things?

Yeah, there were images within the smoke I just couldn't make them out.

I thought that there were images too but they're impossible to just catch from watching the show casually(especially with an SDTV).

It was a good episode, and Eko's backstory was a lot different than I had thought.

It looks like the next episode is going to be a bit more forward moving.

As for the message to Michael, I think it read something like:
"Dad, you've got to co..."

I'm thinking it reads something to the effect of "you've got to come get me" and some sort of directions. I'm assuming that it's the "Others" trying to lure Michael into a trap though - it's highly unlikely they'd let Walt use the computer, especially when they probably know the ins and outs of the system.

This is also the reason I think that the splice was cut out of the film - so that people would try to contact the "Others" and the Others could gain information from those who try to keep in contact.

Next episode's looking good though. Does anybody know how many eps are in this season?

Great episode last night. I think Ecko's backstory was the best one yet, and it also related directly to what was going on in the episode.

Thanks for the link about the images in the smoke, Javi. They happened so quickly I didn't catch them. That scene reminded me a lot of The Abyss.

I like the backstory but how does that small plane get from Africa to the South Pacific?

Also, the smoke is the security system, aka the monster.

So they've dispensed one of the biggest mysteries since the show started. Not completely but they took the menace out of it. Locke and Ecko stared down the "monster" and lived to tell the tale (or not, since everyone seems to be keeping secrets or just not communicating).

See they raise more questions as they unravel some of the plot. It's like you're driving up a mountain and you think you've reached the peak and then it levels off for a bit and there are more peaks.

Also, I don't think something big is going to happen next week. Wait for Feb. or May sweeps for that. We've been headfaked before. All the mystery of the hatch fell flat and now it's a place to chat or take showers.

Golly Gee, thanks for informing us how the show works. I mean 30 some od episodes and I still didn't understand that I was only going to get a bread crumb every week.

I tell you what I want to know. I want to know who the hell the other 30 people are that are always milling around in the background on the beach! Why have that many people survive if you're not going to use them? I guess so they can use them as a pool to pull from if they need another character to develop.

I love the show, but it is getting a little frustrating as it is moving at a snail's pace right now. Plus if you're trying to create a sense of reality around these people and you want your audience to believe that this can really happen, you can't have a puff of black smoke as the enemy. I agree with keeping the audience in suspense, but at least throw something at us that we can believe in. I would have settled for a bigfoot or some kind of 2 legged monster, but a puff of smoke?

Don't get me wrong, I love the show, but I think the producers have been reading too many fansites and now they're trying too hard to be unpredictable. I read on an entertainment site that they are literally making it up as they go along. Like I said, I love the show, but I can see it unraveling if they continue to let the viewers influence where the show goes.

I agree with you, I am getting more tired of this show. I thought the black smoke thing was a real cop-out. They couldn't have come up with something more interesting?

Everytime I see or hear Ecko I think of him ramming some guy up the ass in Oz or chasing Jim Carey in Africa.

Not to be too critical but I don't know what some of you guys expect from the show. The producers/writers just can't give away all the secrets of the show. I enjoy the episode format where they choose a character and explore his/her life before the island. Sure, some weeks it is frustrating because you want more but ABC isn't going to throw out all the juicy stuff in a season and a half when they can take their time and have a solid show for 3-5 seasons. I just enjoy each episode for what it is...and that is usually a pretty cool ride. Now maybe I'm easy to please but thats the way I see it.

I highly doubt that. It's a small handful of people like yourself who b*tch and moan every week about the show, and it not giving you the anwsers you want. Yet somehow you continue to watch, which is more astonishing.

The audience for Lost is only growing stronger, so I've yet to see this mass exodus of people who just can't take it anymore. But even if they lost 50% of their audience they would still be pulling in about 9 - 10 million viewers, which is higher then Alias (another ABC formula series) did and it ran for 5 seasons.

For most viewers the show is moving along just fine, I'm not saying it is perfect...for example it makes no sense to me that no one shares information. If I'm Chartlie in this last episode, I am telling everyone about the plane and Ecko's brother. But Lost is breaking new ground, with add on Web sites and other tie ins, part of the show is finding out the things you missed in each episode.

While I understand that this is not for everyone, I don't understand how someone who can't take this type of series still watches it. It's been like this from day 1, it's not going to change, even if the ratings dip.

ABC screwed with Abrahms last series Alias and made it go self contained episodes one season, and the show had been in the shitter since and it being canceled. I don't think they will do that to their golden child again.

I can understand why some people have issues with the show, but to expect it to be "realistic" or move more quickly just doesn't keep with the way Lost works. It's part sci-fi, part action flick, and part soap opera. I would be the first to agree that they hit a real slow patch for a few episodes this season, but since the other survivors have entered the picture, the show has returned to what makes it great for most of us. Ecko's episode was terrific -- a compelling back story that directly related to the present-day events.

As for making it up as they go, there's been a lot of great TV, books, and movies created that way. I remember reading an interview with Elmore Leonard, and he said he never writes an outline or necessarily knows how his books will end when he starts them. He said they wouldn't be fun to write if he did.

It looks good in HD.

Make the cynical delaying tactics, repetitive warm moments and filler somewhat tolerable.

Agreed, Doby. That's a head-scratcher.

Super episode tonight. Maybe my favorite of this season so far. Sawyer is hard core. "There's a new sheriff in town" :) The Hobbit was a bit creepy tonight. I like Locke but I liked seeing him get duped tonight. Hurley is still good for a belly laugh an episode even though he's only on for like 5 minutes every week. Looks like Sayid will be getting medievil again next week.

Agreed. It's good to see the con man putting his skills to work. He had some classic lines last night.
