pk,
Gotcha. That makes more sense. I thought we were watching two different games there for a while. :D

Scoop:

One more follow-up: I guess what I'm trying to say is that football is much more about execution than creativity, especially when coaches are calling all of the plays in football.

Yes, you see creativity in football. But most of that occurs after the basic play has been executed, such as when the running back is in the open field or after the catch by the wide receiver, or when the play breaks down, such as a quarterback scramble.

Soccer is all about creativity. Yes, there is some execution, such as on free kicks and corner kicks. But the limits on offense and defense in soccer are basically limited to the player's skill and imagination, on the fly.

In a nutshell, you often see European soccer coaches sitting on the bench for extended periods of time with no motions toward their players because it's really up to the players in a lot of situations on the pitch. In football, coaches are spoon-feeding plays and instructions to players on every play.

That's not a negative toward football; it's just one of the differences between it and soccer. I love football, but I really relish the fluidity and creative thinking that's rewarded with brilliance in soccer.

Take care,
PK

Hood, with all due respect, when you say recreational sports I am thinking of organized league play. Not a once in a while jaunt to the local course or driving range. I know 1 guy who plays in regular amateur golf tournaments.

Anyway, besides that, you are coming off as a "smart ass". No problem by me, whatever floats your boat.
I guess this is where I'm supposed to start laughing, right?

I mean really, here's a couple of other "exhilarting concepts." One, pulling some ho into a closet and sticking in her bunghole for a quickie and moving on. Or, two, pulling a U of Miami 7th Floor where like 10 dudes score at the same time in like five minutes and move on with it.

And even if we are talking conventional and I bust early, my goal at this point is to bust again or go to bed, it's certainly not to wait around for hours to see if my opponent/partner can get off too.

That actually sounds more like the work of a dude with a boring sex life, so I can very slightly see where one coud see soccer as attractive if you use that mess as the a workable framework through which to view the game.
You asked a question when you started the thread. I answered why I love it as much as I do. You are not the first person to find my answer nutty and you wont be the last. I am however perplexed that you would brush aside someone's explanation after you yourself posed the question.

It seems to me your mind is already made up and you are looking to purposely show off your "forum" skills by making a splash with your "audition".

Good luck, but like you with Big Mo, I will look at your posts with a "seriuosly jaundiced eye".

If this is what you define as sensible conversation instead of troll bait, you might want to have a rethink.

And from the Dungy thread:

Okay, little man. You ARE a new guy around here. Take that and fit it into my previous comment about you and take my advice seriously. There are guys around here who are much more ready to rip you a new one for being a troll and/or making newbie mistakes than I am. I think your debate and posts have been perfectly characterised by what I've said, I'm sorry you don't like it.
You haven't definied what you mean by 'big,' have not defined the parameters of your argument insofar as league/individual sports is concerned, yet you snap at anyone who disagrees or qualifies anything you say while pretending you're having a civilised argument.
Even the league/individual sports parameter doesn't work in your argument's favor, as you have to keep in mind that one game of soccer requires 22 players. That's not including subs, of which in recreational soccer, there are an unlimited number, meaning that besides the 22 guys playing, there can be 7-10 guys waiting for a sub-in. That's one game. I used to referee at a complex that had 20+ fields, and every weekend, from 8am to 10pm, each field was used. Hmm...let's say six games per field, 30 players per match, 20 fields. You do the math. And there are complexes like that everywhere in big cities.

I was also a late bloomer when it came to loving football (at age 30)...The WE8 series really got me into the game and I haven't looked back.

Being in South America for the past few months also gave me the chance to watch a tonne of football on tv and even catch a Boca game in the process. And while I didn't scale a 20 foot fence when they scored, I had teary eyes just minutes after arriving to my seat and was witnessing the passionate chants that the crowd was getting into.

As far as the MLS goes, I believe I missed the news while away, that Toronto (my home) has been granted a new stadium and MLS team for 2007. Not sure if the league can excite me after watching so much European and Argentinian football, but it would be great to watch nonetheless. I believe that most of the team has to consist of Canadian born players, so the nationalist factor certainly helps.

Unfortunately not too many of my friends feel the same way about the sport. Will they ever? Not sure, but I'll try my best to convert a few. In Toronto, you have a lot of cultures, so on any weekend morning you'll find Italians, Brits, Portugese, etc..watching games from back home in local bars and cafe's. I can't see many born and raised Canadians, without strong ties to another country doing the same though.

You interpret "recreational" to mean playing in amateur tournaments? Wow.
pigpen81 wrote:Anyway, besides that, you are coming off as a "smart ass".
I do hope nobody's feeling's get hurt by a little colorful disagreement. Truly, I do.
pigpen 81 wrote:No problem by me, whatever floats your boat.
Cool, cool.

Well, you see, generally I would one-hundred percent agree with your position. However, I'm pretty sure that most people would take the "exhilirating once you get the concept" part to take it a little bit past "why I love it as much as I do" and puts you right smack dab in the middle of the "smart ass" zone.
pigpen wrote:It seems to me your mind is already made up and you are looking to purposely show off your "forum" skills by making a splash with your "audition".
Please. That's patently ridiculous. Other folks have made very reasonable points as to why they like soccer (sans the whole you-don't-get-it nonsense) and I've read those posts with interests and learned something from them. Folks start in with the "I know and you don't" on something that's strictly a matter of opinion, and I have a tendency to point out the narrow mindedness of doing so, regardless of whether or not I agree with your opinion.
pigpen wrote:Good luck, but like you with Big Mo, I will look at your posts with a "seriuosly jaundiced eye".
Fair enough.

Bonus points for misspelling seriously like I did. That's cute.

Edit: Woops, I f***ed up. I hadn't misspelled it. Thought that I had and thought you were being cute, when it really was just an innocent typo. I be dumbass.

Much better. That "seemed to be" business had me worried.

Do you realize how silly that sounds? Honestly, am I supposed to be frightened? Folks don't agree, folks don't agree. Big deal. People wanna set me straight, then great, let 'em. They offer up something worthwhile like someone pointing out I posted in the wrong thread or someone pointing out that one of those posts came across as troll bait, or someone making the point about hangin' out with high school boys, I acknowledge, pay my respects and move on.
mobiggins wrote:I'm sorry you don't like it.
Have no idea how I'm going to sleep tonight. The horror.
mobiggins wrote:You haven't definied what you mean by 'big,' have not defined the parameters of your argument insofar as league/individual sports is concerned...
That's a fair point, which rubba19 already made. By "big" I guess I meant as big as baseball, football or basketball. Of course, one could get a lot clearer than that, but I think that's a sufficient framework for some general discussion on the issue. Anyone wants to clarify, feel free.
mobiggins wrote:..."big yet you snap at anyone who disagrees or qualifies anything you say while pretending you're having a civilised argument.
Incorrect. As I already said, I have absolutely no problem, nor have I expressed any with anyone disagreeing with me. What I do have a problem with is the holier-than-thou my opinion on soccer is something that you're feeble mind can't grasp nonsense. You have an opinion stated it. Keep the perching yourself on a pedastal to yourself.
Even the league/individual sports parameter doesn't work in your argument's favor, as you have to keep in mind that one game of soccer requires 22 players. You ever tried to get a tee time at a muni on the weekend? I also see tons of 40+ dudes putting the spikes on to chase a ball in their free time. Tons of 'em.

Anyway, now this is a point of fact -- whether more adults play soccer recreationally than golf is not a matter of opinion -- so hey, you can prove
me wrong and feel free to get on that pedestal and call me a d*****bag.

Hahaha...that's hilarious...seeing as how you're the one with the issue. You claim that there are plenty of college and high school kids attempting to be "down" by using slang and rhetoric. Seems to me that your statement quoted by many, was an attempt at being "down" as you put it. I know...pulling two different quotes from two different threads is hard for you to comprehend, but it is slightly ironic to say the least. Might want to keep your "acts" straight, that would lessen the workload on your thought processor.

Yes, the point was that attempting to be "down" is a tell-tale sign that one should be on suicide watch. That's what I took away from pulling a few quotes together from two different threads. Matter of fact, all that thinking is making my head hurt. Thanks for helping me to understand, dbd. I'm forever in your debt.

I will now go rest my very feeble mind.

Carry on.
