Sega or Mitsubishi come to mind? I wouldn't say the Japanese support their own companies. Foreign goods, especially luxury, are EXTREMELY popular in Japan. I think it really has more to do with the fact the support for PSX and PS2 is huge there from developers so diversity of games allows more consumers to find games (and therefore hardware sales) that fit their tastes. The Xbox library in Japan looks very American. They just have different tastes and MS has been able to convince software developers to cater to the Japanese market.Danimal wrote:There are no compelling launch games for the Japanese market. If DOA 4, FFXI or RE5 was a launch title they would have sold much better.
But unlike here in the USA, japanese people support their own companies (Sony & Nintendo) and you're not gonna do a lot of damage with PGR3 as your main launch title.
Hell I looked at the list today, WTF is coming out in the next 2 months besides CH2K6?
One thing about the Japanese is that their culture is very traditional. They don't like surprises or necessarily to try new things. It can take years for them to catch onto a new product. Just their way.
Well I'm late to the party but damn... the 360 is freaking cool.
I haven't even played one game yet. I've been screwing around with stuff. From the design, the controller, bonus remote, to even the interface.
Damn this is one cool machine. I thought I was going to have buyer's remorse because I paid for a bundle. Atlest I got $800 worth of 360 stuff not just a premium for $800.
Geez, I haven't been this blown away by a system since the Dreamcast.

Don't play GeoWars if you are drunk or for some of you, high. That game is like listen to Pink Floyd hanging out with Morrison or Joplin while you are watching some Japanese seizure inducing cartoon.
Fun though.
All I can say is that the 360 is not just a gaming console in one day it has turned into my media machine. I think that's the goal of MS anyway. But the damn thing is so well designed from inside out that I dont' know what Sony can do at this point. Maybe actually have their console available at luanch.

26 premium units arrived at my local Wal-mart (Windsor, ON, Canada) yesterday and sold out in about 4 hours. There was a snowstorm so there wasn't many people around.
Oh, and for those thinking they got bought up by the staff, my friend who was working at the time had to wait until his lunch to purchase his.

That's what I've heard. I'm going to try to hit the BB out in Westbury, LI. They're supposedly getting in 66 units. Use this hand dandy inventory tracker to see how many 360 units your local BBs will have in stock on Sunday.Brando70 wrote:For the 12/18 Best Buy shipment, does that mean the BB stores are supposed to have them when they open on Sunday? I'm going to try and get their early to snag one, as the 8th Circle of Hell cold snap we're supposed to get might deter campers.

Phew...Finally got my 360. Futureshop had a shipment of 44 units while BB were adverstising a minimum of 30 per store. Needless to say it sold out on the hour. They were trying to advertise the extra warranty for 3 years for about $70 Cad which would have covered overheated issues, problems with the discs (some people are claiming they are scratching their DVD's) etc. We know about the overheated issue, but how many of you decided to go for the extra warranty? I didn't but left the store wondering.

I don't have a 360, but I'll most certainly get an extended warranty when I get around to buying one in 2006.
My first Xbox in 2002 crapped out after about 70 days -- thank God for Wal-Mart's 90-day return policy on electronics. And it wasn't even a unit from the launch manufacturing run, which had confirmed problems. After I returned that defective Xbox, I bought another one at EB and paid $32 for a two-year, no-questions-asked warranty. Money well spent, even if I never had to use it. Peace of mind was worth it.
With the problems reported with this first batch of Xbox 360s, there's no way I would buy one now without getting an extended warranty. Especially since Microsoft is reportedly cranking them off the assembly line as fast as possible to meet worldwide holiday demand, Japan the exception. That's a recipe for manufacturing flaws.
So I think buying a 360 without an extended warranty right now is gaming Russian roulette: the equivalent to boinking a cheap whore without a condom. You might get the drip; you might not. I'd rather slip it on before I slip it in.
Maybe that's the paranoia talking, but I had an Xbox take a sh*t on me. And what new console in the last few years hasn't had launch quality problems? The PS2, Xbox and now Xbox 360 had widespread reports of defects at launch, with the crap disc drives on the PS2 and Xbox and now the overheating and disc read problems on the 360.
I don't believe in extended warranties for products without reports of defects. But when reports of defects are as widespread as they've been with recent new consoles, extended warranties are a smart move, in my opinion.
Glad you got a 360, though, man! Enjoy it.
Take care,
PK

I did. Got a 2 year TAP warranty from CompUSA. I have had 2 PS2's go bad and with this warranty, I paid nothing for a brand new unit. VERY sound investment.10spro wrote:We know about the overheated issue, but how many of you decided to go for the extra warranty? I didn't but left the store wondering.

You lucky bastard!laurenskye wrote:Man you guys have had bad luck. I still have original at launch PS2, Cube, and Xbox and have never even had a "dirty disk" message.
I know some of these "problems" are caused by user abuse of the systems. But man, I treat my electronics stuff like the Crown Jewels. I always back out of every game to the main menu before ejecting the tray, never use the tray eject to turn on the power, have a ton of ventilation around my Xbox, never stack anything on it, dust often around it, etc., etc.
I think most of us around here are similarly cautious with our stuff.
Guess my number was up with my first Xbox!

I still have my original launch PS2. Works fine. My launch Xbox was working when I EBAYed it back in October.laurenskye wrote:Man you guys have had bad luck. I still have original at launch PS2, Cube, and Xbox and have never even had a "dirty disk" message.
PK, I'm very much the same way with my consoles. All my cosoles have their own shelf in my entertainment sytem and they are well ventilated. If I'm gonna drop $400 on something I'm damn sure gonna take care of it.

I didn't get an extended warranty, and I'm not worried about it. MS seems to have been responsive and generous regarding malfunctioning/defective Xboxes and 360s, at least judging by the experiences posted here. Look at Seminole (at least I think it was Seminole): the Core system he got had freeze-up issues. Within 3 days of calling MS on the phone, he had a brand new Premium system, complete with HDD, under his TV. So not only did they turn it around super fast, no-questions asked and no shipping costs required, but they didn't mind giving him a free HDD for his troubles.
And look at Xbox owners' experience with bad Thompson drives over the years having their Xboxes fixed or drives replaced free of charge even 2 years after warranty.
I'm happy I got the EB replacement program for my PS1 and PS2 as both had issues and needed to be replaced, and for a PS3 I would get one too. But it seems like MS is putting a lot of effort into customer service, particularly at this early stage in the 360 launch. I'm betting they will continue to do so, and if any issues develop with the Core system I have, I expect to get good results by calling MS.
Not only that, but if I had gotten one at EB and paid for their replacement package, what would they do for me now if my machine broke down? With the PS1 and PS2, they would just give me a new unit off the shelf. Not so with the 360 at least not for some time. I don't know what they'd do other than tell me to call MS.
