I don't like the Thome trade at all. Right now the plan is to have Thome as the DH and resign Paulie. I like the resigning Paulie part but to trade Aaron Rowand for an old and likely washed up Thome is horrible.

A five year contract for a closer is crazy IMHO. That kind of contract would make sense for a rich club who needed a relief ace to put them over the top, someone like the Braves or Red Sox for instance. The BJs aren't close to contending in their division. They'd be better off with either another bat or SP.

There are always guys with live arms who can be decent closers for a year or two at a time. Todd Jones and Turnbow were examples this year.

Guys, is this deal an official one? There's reports of it printed everywhere, but even GM P. Ricciardi said that everything was too premature. If indeed this deal goes thru, he would top the contract that M. Rivera got on 01-04 from the Yankees and I don't know if that's a good thing. Mind you, since the Jays are owned by the Rogers family, they do have more cash to spend and announced so after the season.

Wow db, that TV is a good find. I checked the Panasonic site and it said it displayed both 1080i and 480p, but not 720p. Should I count that as a strike against it, or is 1080i basically just as good? I know interlaced is worse for high-motion images, but I'm talking basics here.

LOL...wrong thread Slumber. As some have mentioned in that thread, sometimes 1080i is even better looking than 720p. I would consider it a push given the price of the TV.

There's talk, rumours, that D. Jeter may move to center field replacing B. Williams, playing A. Rodriguez back at shortstop and signing B. Mueller from BOS, or T. Glaus from ARI. They're actively still searching for an outfielder but if all fails, manager J. Torre may just try that formation above.

10spro's Yankees post is the reason why I don't like the Konerko re-signing. The Yankees accumulation of talent on the left end of the defensive spectrum gives them flexibility. It's a lot easier to find productive 1B/DH/Corner OF types than it is at the key defensive positions. Although as a Giants fan, I can tell you that some unnamed teams seem to have a bigger problem finding 1B types than others.

The White Sox have locked in a huge chunk of payroll for two bats who play the same defensive position. They can stick one at DH or platoon them at first but they have no other options. I don't think Konerko is going to put on catcher's gear again.

It's tough to criticize Kenny Williams after CWS just won the Series, but I didn't like the Thome trade at the time, and it looks even worse with Konerko staying on the South side.

I don't have a problem with the Sox getting Thome, but I do have a problem with them giving up Aaron Rowand to get him. Thome essentially replaces Big Frank in the lineup at the expense of a good defensive Center Fielder. With Everett and Thomas gone they have the flexibility to get some speed that can come off the bench. We'll see what happens but I don't think having Konerko and Thome together is as big a deal as you do since it's the same as Konerko and Thomas.

I agree Scoop. Losing Rowand is the key.

It's great to have as much hitting as you can afford but distribution of talent is important. It's possible to move Pods to CF, but he's a defensive downgrade over Rowand. It's easier to find another LF but then you've probably taken two steps backward defensively (CF & LF) and one step backwards offensively (Rowand to ?).

Thome could come back strong and make me look stupid. But his contract takes him through age 38. I don't think he'll be a 2008 All-Star.

No offense to anyones opinion, but good defensive CF are not that hard to come by IMO. The Sox have a few kids in their minor leagues who are ready to make the jump. If Thome and Konerko stay healty you're looking at 80 - 100 HR and who knows how many RBI's out of those two. IMO Rowand was average at the plate so I'm not sure how much you're losing there.

I think the biggest reason many people are upset is he was such a good guy, it kind of broke my heart to see that press conference, the guy came up in the Sox organization and you can tell he was hurting.

Tell that to the Braves pitchers who are convinced that a defensive stud like Andruw Jones saves the staff era at least .5-.75 runs per year. At least that's what they claimed in Leo Mazzone's book.

Maybe Brian Anderson, another youngster or an off-season acquistion can replace Rowand, maybe not. If it's Anderson's job to lose, that's a lot of pressure on a kid who had very good but not spectacular Minor League numbers.

Well see there is a difference, Jones is a superstar CF. Rowand is a good centerfielder. I couldn't compare the two it would be insulting to Jones.

Gonna agree with Danimal on this one. Thome is a good guy also,and is reported to be in the best shape of this life. He has had one bad injury plagued year,out of arguably what could be a Hall of Fame career. The potental for him to put up some big numbers is a chance I'd be willing to take. There is plenty of talent around to protect Anderson,if he is the CF choice. Plus the free agent season (or trade) is far from over,and K. Williams will probably go out and get a serviceable back up,just in case. Its high risk , high reward,but the ChiSox seem to have been pretty good at it lately.

That would be another loss for the Braves.

Furcal, Farnsworth, Leo Mazzone.

Bobby Cox is going to have turn some tricks next year if they want to keep that division title streak alive.

Mets should have their new catcher after the weekend, Bengie Molina, Ramon Hernandez or maybe a trade to TB for Tobby Hall.

Minaya is trying to get some more help for the pen, even after the signing of Billy Wagner.

If you saw what the Braves offered him, you knew they weren't that high on him. 3 years like 2.5 a year. They weren't serious about him. They've got too many young and cheap arms. And Furcal ain't gone yet. It's just gonna be another year for the Braves...everyone counting them out. Keep it up...it works wonders.
