College Hoops 2K6 Impressions thread

Ok db thanks. I kinda liked the working my way up in the coaches mode, but I wanted to start with Dayton, which like you said, I could not use closed mode. No biggie, still a great game.
Does anyone remember the problem last year with a few of the schools, mostly MAC, BGSU, Miami of O, having a problem with choosing a specific camera. This was a known issue, just wonderig if this has been fixed. Sorry for all the questions, have yet to pick the game up.

Oh and to avoid confusion there is a Coach Mode where you you play a single game as the coach usijg any teams (like quick play). I was confused by this since I never used it.
In 2K6 and 2K5 you can run a Legacy/Dynasty (closed - limited teams) or (open - any team you want). Hope that makes sense.
I will check on the camera on those two teams in a sec.
Great thanks, since the Drive cam is advailable we will be good to go. And I hope the ranking engine and the award enging has been tweaked, as it would would have a few oddities from time to time.

Do 360 games detect USB flash drives as a potential save location? If so, that's cool (I don't have a USB flash drive to test).bdoughty wrote:I am sure it will be a simple memory device that plus into the USB port.Sudz wrote:any word on named rosters for the 360? have we figured that out yet?
I figured the only way to get the names would be the same as the Xbox, via a memory card (and I don't think they've made a Action Replay 360 yet, although you gotta think it's coming).
USB memory would be much slicker though. Connect it to your PC, connect it to your 360, no more Action Replay cable/jack thingy for the PC.

I have no experience with Isomotion. And I have to hand it to 2k Sports for their half-assed training mode. There's no training, just a popup on what move you pulled off.
So how do you pull off special moves. I saw the NBA 2k list, is it mostly the same? Personally, I'm not that adept at button combos so for me, the joystick skill required to pull off some of the moves is a bit much. That's my minor complaint. I like how EA does special moves although they are mo-cap heavy. But it was still user friendly.

Except for the jab step/headfake move from the triple threat position. This is in X360 NBA 2K6 but not in Xbox CH 2K6.

So all but the one listed are the same. Plus this is college basketball. Worry less about the man on man shake and bake crap with isomotion and practice setting picks, moving the ball around and using the Dual player control to set players up for a 3, or to post up, etc.
Bill, are you going to start a 64 team tourney with this version or are you going to wait for the 360 version?Bill_Abner wrote:I blogged this tonight but since impressions are light, here's a my one take.
Another busy day for me so I wasn't able to get a game of CH in until this evening. First impression is a good one. Here's a few thoughts based on a game with East Carolina (me) and Utah State on All Conference level w/o any slider changes.
* I won 63-56! This game rules!
* Not one funky reverse layup animation! Thank god.
* The control feels a lot like NBA 2K6 although not quite as refined.
* Same FT system as NBA 2K6
* Gameplay has the same feel as CH 2K5. (A good thing)
* Much better animation from top to bottom. Still a tad on the stiff side but several new animations which look a lot better than last year. (being able to crossover and take it to the basket ...awesome)
* The play by play is very quiet on default settings. I had to lower the crowd and other sound settings just to hear the PbP.
* I don't miss the ESPN license at all (thus far).
* My biggie: 3 pointers. On default settings and 10 min halves, Utah State took 10 3's, which is a lot better than last year. That said, there is something that I need to keep an eye on: the Aggie SG (an 85 rated 3 shooter) took several shots where his feet were barely on the 3 point line. The set play seems to not take the SG out far enough. If the 18 footers were counted as 3's Utah State would have fited about 15 3's for the game.
* Of the 10 3 pointers, the 3 point stud took 6, and a 77 rated SF took 2 and the backup SG took 2. If the CPU will shoot 10-20 per game that will be much better than a team shootiong 1 or 2, which happened a lot last year. I'm gonna try a game with a team w/o a 3 point ace to see if anyone fires off a 3 next.
Holy crap, this game is good. I love it with the Drive camera and fouls and 3pt attempts up a few notches. There are a TON of loose balls, errant passes, fouls, three point attempts, and plenty of variety. The press is really well done. They've come a long way in that regard as it now seems to be a valid strategical option and is a lot tougher to break than before...at least for me.

Yeah, they did a damn nice job with the press. I just don't see how I can go back to the game after playing on the 360 though. I should probably just shelve it and wait for the new version...although there is no guarantee that we'll have rosters for that version. Maybe I will just have to keep it around.Leebo33 wrote:Holy crap, this game is good. I love it with the Drive camera and fouls and 3pt attempts up a few notches. My wife was going to pick this up for me for Xmas. She is having trouble finding the game, though. How can that be?
Anyways, she has gone to a few places and actually had the NBA 2K6 in her cart then noticed it was for the 360. She knows that we don't have a 360, but she then asked me last night why "that big Shaq dude was on the college game".
I think I better pick it up myself.
I am loving the NBA game. It is the best playing basketball game I have ever played. Better than Inside Drive. The shooting just feels perfect. Having Rip come off a screen and hit a jumper is nirvana on this game. I can't wait to get my hands on the college game.

Huh? Who's worried about the jab step w/ headfake move being missing? I was just stating the fact that this move isn't in CH 2K6 for those who aren't aware about it. If this doesn't concern you, then fine. But don't try to turn this into some pro vs. college basketball debate.bdoughty wrote:So all but the one listed are the same. Plus this is college basketball. Just wait until you get pressed by an athletic team while controlling a PG with less than stellar ballhandling skills. Talk about a nightmare scenario.Leebo33 wrote:Holy crap, this game is good. What makes it tougher to break the press in this game is that trapping animation comes a little quicker whenever two defenders in the backcourt converge on the ballhandler, and that forces you to pass the ball off quicker than you may like. Plus you can't just have the player receiving the inbound pass immediately throw it over the top of the press beyond the halfcourt line anymore like was possible in 2K5. If you do it in this game it results in an instant turnover because that pass will get picked off. You really have to be patient by either breaking the press singlehandedly controlling a PG and using slick dribbling skills (check that Fullcourt Iso drill to practice on this), or by looking for an opening in the pressing defense to throw that diagonal crosscourt pass over the halfcourt line at the right moment.
I have X360 and NBA 2K6. And while NBA 2K6 looks truly awesome and plays great, I can still see myself continuing to play Xbox CH 2K6 just for the sheer number of extra options and features. Plus X360 NBA 2K6 have some nagging issues as far as online play is concerned which is a big issue for me since I play at least 90% of time on Xbox Live with my basketball games. Hopefully those problems gets fixed with a patch or something.dbdynsty25 wrote:Yeah, they did a damn nice job with the press. I've only played a few games, but I feel like the series has worked out most of the flaws that kept it from being a great game. I started a Colgate legacy and enjoyed the Midnight Madness scrimmage.
I am still a little bit in the dark about recruiting. There's a lot of depth, but even the in-game manual doesn't seem to explain it as well as it should. I never am quite sure if I should be focusing on contacting recruits early instead of training (in those couple of weeks before games), whether to pursue a lot of recruits, etc. I have one assistant who has a B- in recruiting, so I used up all his time in week 1 with asking for tapes of players with more than 50% interest.
I was happy to see that, after going through the first recruiting week, my prospects were still on the list and hadn't been wisked away to a secret detention center.

Whoa there nelly. I was replying to Jrod and his questions on the new Iso controls and was having issues with it. It was not a reply to YOU on how to play the game, college-pro debate, or whatever other conspiracy you might have bottled up. I only quoted your reply because it showed what moves had changed based on the list you had posted, that Jrod already mentioned. Just a simple explanation to Jrod that to be successful in CH 2K6 he needs to focus on other things beyond iso moves.
Damn David Stern ought to put you on retainer. 90% of all defendants in trials do not get such zealous representation.

Oh. Sorry, man. I misunderstood your post. Looks like my sinuses got me going this morning.

If IGN had one shred of credibility they lost it RIGHT HERE.

Yet the following games would be considered to possess that greatness based on this logic.
NCAA 06 March Madness 8.7 (Greatness to the reviewer at least)
ESPN College Hoops 2K5 Sports 8.8 11/18/2004
NCAA March Madness 2005 Sports 8.6 11/18/2004
ESPN College Hoops Sports 8.7 11/14/2003
NCAA College Basketball 2K3 Sports 8.6 11/26/2002

They gave CH 2K6 an 8.3 because it did not posess that special GREATNESS.College Hoops 2K6 is a dream for simulation basketball fans. The deep Legacy mode and great broadcast presentation will keep you coming back deep into March. IGN gave EA's NCAA 06 March Madness an 8.7 earlier in the year, but I feel that was a bit of a stretch, and that 2K6 is still the better basketball game even though I will give it a lower score. Simply put, I disagree with the Madness score, and I feel that 2K6 is an impressive game, on the cusp of greatness. And here at IGN, greatness is higher than 8.5.

I agree. I've had to take a little more time adjusting to the new control schemes, but now that I've gotten a little better...wow. This is one of the best representations of college basketball I've ever seen...

If anyone get this far this early. See how dynasty stats look for the CPU.
I hated last year seeing three first team all americains from a 12-13 Western Illinois team all averaging between 11-13 points a game. I also could not stand the Wodden award winner going 10 10 for the 15th team in the country. For some reason, stuff like that just bugs me to death. But the game play is excellent.

I am loving this game, but I did have my first freeze issue tonight and of course it came after playing 3 legacy games without saving, including a last second win over Vermont.
Anyway I went into the leaders screen for the firsdt time and the game froze, it reminded me of the recruiting freezes from last year. I am chalking it up to a quirk, but was cvurious if anyone else had this issue.

No issues so far in my Colgate legacy. Completed a couple weeks of recruiting, all the recruits are still there.
Played against Utah Valley St. in the opener and lost a close 59-55 game. With under a minute left, I had a 55-54 lead. I dropped into a 2-3 zone, figuring the CPU would go for 2. I wound up leaving a guard open and he took the 3 and nailed it. Thought that was pretty cool.
Tweaking the sliders a little really helped. I bumped up 3 pt shots and all the fouls a few notches, and saw a good amount of long-range shots and trips to the line.
I'll have to keep an eye on the stats and other quirks that occurred last year.
