OT: Resident Evil 4 impressions

Post by Badgun »

Just finished a 4 hour session with the game and it is simply fantastic. All of the control issues that made previous versions a lesson in futility have been corrected. You now have a red laser point that comes from your gun so will know where you're aiming and this makes a huge difference for me. In the past, you could empty a whole clip without hitting a target due to the wacky controls and camera angles.

Another huge complaint of mine was also addressed. You shouldn't run out of ammo ever if my first 4 hours is any indication of how the ammo will be distributed. I literally had to quit Resident Evil Zero because I got to a part where I had to kill a bunch of crows and only had 6 bullets left. I literally could not advance any further.

There is also a traveling merchant that will pop up here and there to buy and sell with. I wondered early on why I was getting money when monsters died and I soon found out that not only will you find better weapons as you progress through the game...you can buy them as well.

The atmosphere is perfect. You will be walking quietly at one point only to have the silence broken with a blood curdling scream from one of the bad guys as he buries a hatchet in your skull. I tell you, when these guys spot you, point at you and yell, it will make you piss your pants.

The premise of the game is you are an agent hired to locate the president's young daughter who has been kidnapped by some sort of religious cult. Though these guys are human, they are crazed and probably scarier than any zombie that has been in the previous Resident Evil games. They wll run at you and run from you and double back on you later. A little while ago, I walked up on a guy on a pier. He spotted me, raised his arm in the air and yelled something, and then disappeared into the water. A minute later, he popped up out of the water and da*n near made me scream like a little girl.

This game is great fun and actually doesn't feel as frustratingly hard as the previous Resident Evil games. That's certainly a good thing as the difficulty of the last two on the Gamecube has been downright insane. The game supports progressive scan and Dolby Pro Logic II and I'll have to say it's the best looking Gamecube title to date. The sound is awesome too. If you're a fan of the series, then this game is an absolute must have. It really is a must have for anyone that owns a Gamecube.

This game is flat out AMAZING!!!

It is too bad it came out so early in the year as it might be overlooked as Game of the Year material. It is a masterpiece in every aspect. If you thought you were tired of Survival Horror games, take another look at where they have evolved now with this one. More emphisis on action with this one which some might like and other might not. BUT, the game's presentation is a true work of art and I KNOW would be appreciated by everyone at DSP.

If you have a Gamcube, like action games OR surivial horror games OR just like refreshing, artistic, well made games in general, BUY THIS NOW!

Is the game perfect? I am sure we could all find things to nitpick about, but the game does SO many other things right and is SO refreshing for a sequal that it would really be like complaining that Angelina Jolie (or insert woman of choice here) had a small pimple on her back while you were doing her from behind. I mean, in the big picture, the game lives up to ALL of the hype and the raving reviews.

Please do yourselves a favor and don't pass this up if you even remotely think that you might enjoy it.

Can't understand why the control is still so poor compared to other third person action games, but otherwise, pretty cool.

It blows when you know there's a baddy waiting just inside the door to that shack, yet you can't sidestep toward the door to meet him with your drawn gun. Nooo..you have to run up to him, blindly expose your side, then rotate to face him. Ridiculous in 2004.

But yes, presentation is jaw-dropping.

Totally agreed. Great point and the only 'real' gripe I have with this game so far, but by no means a game killer.

And I suppose it's even more ridiculous in 2005. :?

God, I hate early January...

Did you ever play the first few titles. This is like Halo 2 control compared to what it used to be like.

Concerning the baddies in the shack... Well, I had the same problem myself until I tried something new. Instead of walking in front of the door, walk in front of the window assuming there is one. He'll come for you and you'll be a bit more ready than him running out of the door towards you (This works well for the shack right before you enter the village but I'm certain it'll work other places as well).

Man, they really took a syringe full of fun and injected it into the franchise. I enjoyed the remake of the first game on GC, and it's the only one in the series I've ever finished, but this is on a whole other level. Usually with even the best action games, they sometimes feel like a chore... the presentation is so good here and the gameplay so simple, I'm always excited to fire it up.

Did the "giant" sequence remind anyone else of the cave troll from Fellowship of the Ring? And is that long haired European agent character modeled after Johnny Depp in Once Upon a Time in Mexico? Looks just like him.

Since PK was posting about older games he's gotten into recently, thought I'd mention I just started playing RE4 this past week. It was one of those games I meant to get but just never got around to.

It is truly an incredible game. I love how they combined a Silent Hill atmosphere with plenty of action. They did a great job with the enemy AI and the weapons upgrade system. The controls could still be better, but at least now when I die, it's usually not because of them. And the graphics look much better than Madden 360 :D

One other thing: the scale of some of the monsters is just astounding. "El Gigante" is one of the most intimidating critters I've ever seen in a videogame.

I've been playing the PS2 version over the past couple of days. Man I gotta tell ya, once I got used to the combersome controls I've fallen in love.

This game really is something special. I'll put this one up above Half Life 2. I really haven't been a fan of the RE series from Nemesis on, but this game is just awesome. There's really no other way to describe it IMO.

Saw this thread and decided to comment. It's been 7 or 8 months since I beat Resident Evil 4 on the Gamecube and as the end of the year approaches, it's still my favorite game this year. Great graphics, great voice acting, and a very compelling story. Even after 25 hours, I did not want this one to end. Resident Evil 5 on the 360 can't come soon enough.

Probably my favorite single player game of the Xbox, PS 2, GameCube gen. Absolutely terrific and makes me remember why I like videogames in the first place.

I finally finished this last night after 27 hours and some change. One of the best videogames I've ever played. Just bumping to remind PS2 owners they should definitely check RE4 out.

So in a blast from the past, I bought RE4 for the XBO because it was on sale for $10. My first impression was "How the f*%# did I ever shoot anything with these f*%#ing controls?" But once my slow-aim muscle memory came back, I got sucked into this game again more than 10 years after playing the original.

It's a pretty lazy upgrade -- yes, 1080p and 60fps, but otherwise nothing special. The controls blow and it's such a "game" in terms of story, puzzles, monsters, etc. But damn if it doesn't remain awesome despite the old design elements. The El Gigantes remain gigantic and the chainsaw maidens still make my pulse quicken. And it still contains the all-time best exploding headshots of any game ever made. Worth a Hamilton if you're looking for some gory retro fun.
