PSP - How does it stack up after 9 months?
With all the giddy talk about our shiny new XBox 360's, I thought it would be appropriate to look back at another console launch from earlier this year. Has the much-anticipated, hyped, and applauded PSP lived up to its potential?
I was among the most vocal champions of the PSP upon launch. It's sexy exterior, impressive graphics, wireless connection, and 'media' possibilities had me fantasizing about the many long flights I take for work and how I would never be bored again...Has it lived up to its potential? How does it stack up against the XBox 360 in terms of launch? What might that tell us about how we'll feel about the 360 in a a few months...
In case you can't tell where I'm headed; I'm disappointed in the PSP. Much like Pam Anderson, the plastic and silicone won me over at first, but after spending some time with it you realize that it's just the same 'ride' all over again; if you close your eyes it could easily be a DS, Gameboy, or PS2. The point is that the games (what few there are!), for the most part, are watered down ports of their console brethren.
Were it not for World Series Poker, I wouldn't be using my PSP at all. As is, it's a pretty expensive poker player since I have a cheap $30 handheld that plays almost as well. Also, since picking up a new iPod Video, it's clear that while the PSP screen is beautiful, getting content onto it is nowhere near as easy and fulfillling as with Apple's solution. I love videopodcasts, and RSS feeds to 'funny' videos; I like having ALL my music with me; I like having a single application to manage it all. The PSP has a great screen, but it's clear Sony wanted us to get the content for that screen at $20 a pop in the form of PSP-based movies. I don't want to pay that much for a film I can only watch on the PSP.
As a sports gamer, Madden on the PSP was the first glimpse (other than Sony's MLB Baseball) that the system might have 'legs'. But in reality, it was not a well-balanced or polished game, and after seeing/playing the 360 version, I know I would never touch it again (so I traded it in).
Burnout is fun, but the small screen and aliased graphics make distant objects difficult to see coming...Again, a watered-down port of a great console game.
Online gaming? Never do it. Without an XBL, getting into a match with a friend over the web can be an exercise in frustration.
The system certainly has prospects for the future, hopefully the second generation sports games will be tight, polished, and complete. I haven't given up on it, and I'm not trading it in.
BUT, a system I might have rated as an A- at launch is quickly becoming a C+ in the harsh light of nearly a year's use...How will the XBox 360 fair?
I don't believe I'll be making a similar claim about the 360 in a few months. The 360 promised multi-media functionality - and unlike Sony- it DELIVERED, big time. The 360 promised an evolution in the already superb XBox Live experience, and it DELIVERED, big time. It promised great graphics and good games at launch, and it DELIVERED, big time. While there isn't a Halo to capture EVERY gamer on the 360, the breadth of launch titles is unlike anything we've ever seen. I had Madden on the PS2 at launch; Madden and the fantasy of other sports games to follow...On the 360, I have Madden, NBA 2k6, and NHL2k6 (all the 'in-season' sports!) and they're all BETTER experiences than they were on my old XBox.
Now, the 360 will face a slow period of game releases between now and January, and again in February (judging by EBGames release list. But the content and breadth of launch titles in conjunction with the machine's many other abilities should keep it active in my life through that time...
In closing, my HATS OFF to those of you who managed to avoid the PSP hype; you saved at least $250 that you didn't need to spend, and you weren't made 'punchy' by it's sexy looks. It may rebound, but I wouldn't advise a purchase until that happens.
And for the 360, congratulations to those of us who bought into the hype AND managed to score one at launch...And to those that did not:
Sucks to be you.
PS> Poll only accepted 4 options and I can't seem to fix it...#1 was supposed to be:
1 - It's in a drawer somewhere...I think?

I traded mine in for $200 (with a couple accesories) towards my 360 a few months back. I was very dissapointed in the slow summer. Not only were there few games that were released crappy, no one was taking advantage of the 'infrastructure' WiFi to play online.
The system itself is very well made but after being let down by my most anticipated titles (MVP being a rehash of the previous years game, MC:3's horrible load times and no online mode, ect...) I gave up. I have a DS now and love it. The whole family uses it and enjoys it. I have Metroid Pinball right now and am addicted.
Oh well...

Honestly, I'm extremely disappointed with the PSP. Giving it a grade at this point, I would rate it a C.
Any games other than puzzle games or one button push games such as HSG and MLB, the PSP feels awkward and clunky. Games that require fast reflexes such as Madden and Virtua Tennis, just don't feel comfortable playing using the nub or the directional pad.
While the marketing for the PSP was strong initially, it seems to have died down here in the U.S. While I didn't expect to see advertisements and commercials everywhere for this portable game, music, and movie player, I did expect there to be a stronger push by Sony. It's almost Christmas, and I rarely have seen a commercial for the PSP being played on tv.
I really believe the PSP came out a year or two too late. I think they would have made a killing on this machine few years back. PS2 was at the height of the gaming world and no one was really thinking about next generation at that point. Now, with the next generation consoles being released, it's more or less an after thought. I really have no hope that developers are looking at this system other than it being for a select group of gamers. Because of that, we'll continue to see lesser gameplay and options.
If anything, the PSP has soured my interest in the PS3. Why should I trust a company that obviously doesn't believe in it's own portable gaming system?

If I had spent $250 and $40 to $50 a game, I think I would be disappointed too.
Having said that, I finally get a chance to sit down and play some PSP on Thanksgiving over at a friend's house. He had 5 games (Namco Museum, Hot Shot Golf, Lumines, Mecury and GTA VCS), I was impressed with the machine itself, and Lumines, HSG and GTA were really really fun games that I can see myself enjoying for a few months, but as a sports gamer, I don't think it has much to hold my attention.
And those overpriced UMD movies are ridiculous, I love the idea and the quality is better than I expected, but the price is laughable. I would never buy one, not even for LoTR EE
I am waiting for PSP to go down to under $200 and sub $30 games before I even think about getting it.

I'm in the minority, but I love the PSP. Too many people like to compare it to a PS2 or even an Xbox 360. I like to compare it to the GBA or DS and I think it compares quite favorably.
I think there were more good to very good games within 6-9 months of launch for the PSP than the PS2. GTA, Socom, Burnout, Hot Shots Golf, Virtua Tennis, Lumines, and WE9 are very good games. I'm not a MLB fan, but I would also put it in the very good game category. I haven't played X-Men, but have heard good things. Untold Legends was also fun.
The worst part about the PSP is the cost of the games. If the games were appropriately priced at $29.99 or a max of $39.99 then I think a lot of the complaints would go away.
The PSP is almost exactly what I expected when I purchased it. I didn't expect fully-featured games during year one just like I wouldn't expect those on X360. The load times are worse than I expected, but the newer games have substantially improved times. I'm not a huge fan of the "anolog nub", but it can easily be replaced with a more traditional option.
The sleep feature is priceless. The ability to play near-PS2 quality games while stuck on a runway...also priceless. I also enjoy the ability to download rosters without the need for an Xport/Action Replay. The web browser is functional and easily allows me to check out this board, a scoreboard, fantasy stats, etc. quickly. I haven't played much online, but when it works it is very cool. Hopefully, it will get better.

Over the past couple months, I've played my GBA more than the PSP and watched more movies on the PSP than I've played games.
Part of it is due to the fact that the games, while advanced for a handheld, are watered down current-gen games instead of a unique experience. Along with that, it turns out I don't care for sports gaming on handhelds as much as I thought.
It is an awesome (but expensive) movie player, my wife bought me the Clerks UMD before our Thanksgiving travels.
I also think Sony doesn't know what to do with it--they expected it to sell out because it had the PlayStation name on it. Bringing out an even more expensive bundle is a dumb move when you're already $120 more than your competition.
In short, I'm disappointed...

A lot of the GBA games were mere ports of Super Nintendo games or near carbon copies. I can't think of many unique experiences during the first year of the GBA or many at all for that matter. Almost the entire top 20 at Gamerankings for the GBA are rehashes. Only Advance Wars and Wario Ware offered new experiences.Dave wrote:Part of it is due to the fact that the games, while advanced for a handheld, are watered down current-gen games instead of a unique experience.
How old is the DS now? It sounds like some of those experiences are unique, but have there been any unique experiences for sports games? What's the best sports game on DS?
I won't get rid of mine, but I hardly play it anymore. I just can't get excited about any of the games anymore. Madden was fun, but with all the delays and load times, it felt almost as much as a chore as Tiger Woods did.
I had no desire to pick the the GTA title and and one time I was psyched for Infected, but not anymore. Once they get the Tivo thing going, I will probably use it again to watch some of my shows while I'm out.
I still think it is a fantastic little system, but $50 games for a handheld is ridiculous and there's just no exclusive titles available for it that excite me.

The only things I don't like about the PSP are
1. lack of games - it's taking time, but slowly some better titles are coming out
2. awkward control for some games - perhaps it's the drawback of having adult sized hands. I feel cramped at times
3. web browser - sucks. crashes all the time on me. I use it in a pinch (e.g., when the wife is taking up the laptop)
4. price of games - I like going to Japan and picking up titles. I can get 3rd party games 20% cheaper there then here
For me I wanted a portable that would have good games and clear graphics. Gameboys were fine for the times, but the DS just doesn't do anything for me graphically. I've always pretty much stayed with puzzle games on handhelds because everything else looked terrible and the poor graphics would affect gameplay.
I personally don't mind ports of games for the PSP. What I wanted was a console for the run, and that's exactly what I got. It's a great way to waste time on the plane or get a few minutes in before bed. I don't expect to have unique experiences on a portable. For me, unique experiences require peripherals - things like Bass Fishing on DC, Samba de Amigo, Taiko no Tatsujin/Taiko Drum Master, Guitar Heroes, etc.
My PSP library is growing, and every title has some merit to it:
1. MLB 2005 - I can't sit through an entire game, so the sleep feature has been great for this one. A quick, easy playing baseball game
2. Mobile Train Simulator - Japanese title that is really a Densha De Go game. It nicely integrates FMV and CG for a "unique" experience in terms of a game but it's not unique to a handheld.
3. Minna no Golf - same as Hot Shots. Great game.
4. Namco collection - I'm a sucker for the arcade classics. Plus the new versions are good. Hard to rate arcade classics anything but great
5. Lumines - video game crack
6. Ridge Racers - classic RR which is either good or bad depending on your tastes. An average racer.
7. Twisted Metal - hardly played it
8. Burnout Legends - essentially a port but I'm enjoying it
9. Winning Eleven - good quality soccer on the go
I bought, completed, and sold the Tokyo Xtreme Racer port. Was not a very good game. I don't have any UMD movies as my PSP is Japanese so I can't play the US movies.
I didn't get a DS, but I'd think there would be more dissappointment with that device. Same games, not a leap in graphics, etc.

Good point on the GBA, always forget about how nostalgic that machine really is. But older games are simpler. But Advance Wars is one of the games I play the most on it, along with the Mario & Luigi RPG...Leebo33 wrote:A lot of the GBA games were mere ports of Super Nintendo games or near carbon copies. As I mentioned, handhelds are the one area where I don't care to play sports games, it turns out. The DS seems to have a pretty crappy sports lineup, to be honest. I did see that a golf game developed by Nintendo is coming out in early 06. In my opinion, a golf game using the touch screen could be great...we'll see how it turns out.

I'm also in the minority, but I still love mine. It's been a stormy relationship and nearly didn't survive the drought of titles over the summer, but after WE9, NBA Live and GTA it is squarely back in favor. I still tend to pick it up before I touch a console just because it's so convenient for a quick gaming fix.
My titles in the order of the rough percentage of time (probably doesn't add up to 100%) each has spent in my machine since I got it at launch:
1. WE9 (40% steady). Thank God there's no ML or cup mode or I'd probably have to quit my job.
2. CMR 2005 (15% steady). Hugely unfortunate bug that makes it nigh impossible to complete first two career stages without knowing a secret handshake has tarnished the reputation of the best driving game on the system, IMHO.
3. MLB (15% in decline). Loved it plenty when the season was on, but little interest in BB now and the KOs and WPs did get tiresome in the end.
4. Tiger Woods PSP (15% stagnant). Load times and stupid putting system aside, a very solid title.
5. NBA Live (5% but growing). Real sleeper for me. Arcady no doubt, but immensely playable.
6. GTA LCS (3% but growing). Never all that big a fan of the series, but perfectly executed in a portable it's awfully hard to resist.
7. World Tour Soccer (3% dead). My first title and still not bad for what it is.
8. Ridge Racer (3% in decline). Fun for a while. Looks nice.
9. FIFA 05 (2% and dead)
10. Virtua Tennis (1%). Again in the minority, but hugely disappointing. Mini games are tedious, and otherwise is just too fomulaic to keep me interested.
11. Lumines (.5%). I'm definitely in the minority here but I just can't get into this one, it also seems way too repetitive for me. After a few minutes it feels like I've scraped my brain with sandpaper. Great music, though.
12. Gretzky 05 (.1% dead). Abysmal title, momentarily got somewhat excited when I found it ran without slowdown at higher clock speed, but turned out that the AI is too crap to even bother.
13. TW 2006 (.05% growing). Just got this yesterday (thanks Leebo) and amazing how much faster it loads now, but for some reason still think I like the feel of the original better.
And MIA:
14. Madden. No idea since DVD Planet "lost it in shipping" months ago despite charginig my account with no replacement ever sent. Protracted legal battles may get it in my hands at some stage.
15. Burnout. Same as above.
My biggest beef with the system so far is the idiotic copy-protection dance between Sony and the hackers and Sony's refusal to add the option to let the thing run at its proper clock speed.
And for anyone complaining about difficulty installing media files and using a Mac, check out PSPWare - I can't imagine how it could be any easier.

Damn that sucks about the games not showing up. Hell, last week I ordered a 1gb memory stick for my dad for christmas from NewEgg. The box arrived, but it was obviously opened on one end and the item was taken out. NewEgg took two days to "investigate" and they sent me out another one free of charge. So the first came Friday and I just received the replacement today. Damn I love NewEgg. I will ALWAYS recommend them to someone looking for an electronic component/part/accessory. Their service is absolutely top notch. Even if their prices are slightly higher, I will always go with them because of that service they provide.
I still enjoy my PSP quite a bit, and a lot has to do perhaps with the fact that I do a lot of travelling and spend countless boring times at hotels and airports. The only feature I'd like to use more is the online option but I have and still enjoy the games like MLB, WE9 Ubiquitous, Hot shots Golf and VT.
I am expecting PES 5 next week. I have a 1GB memory card which I can squeeze the odd movie ( I just converted Mr & Mrs Smith), music and pics, in other words stuff that would make my time away from home go faster. But I understand those of you that have the xbox or 360 around, why your PSP starts collecting dust. Is it me, or there seems to be more UMD movies lately on the shelfs than games?

Any word on who took it?dbdynsty25 wrote:Damn that sucks about the games not showing up. Hell, last week I ordered a 1gb memory stick for my dad for christmas from NewEgg. Wipeout Pure requires fast reflexes and plays great with the pad or the nub if you can get used to the nub's low position. I should be getting Pro Evo 5 for my PSP soon, but at the moment Wipeout Pure is the only game I own. I never got into Lumines and traded it in after a month. But I am really glad I bought my PSP back in early April. There were plenty of times this year I would have been bored to death with nothing to do without my PSP. Like when I had to wait while my wife had a 3+ hour dentist appointment.sportdan30 wrote:Honestly, I'm extremely disappointed with the PSP.
Wow, Blublub. I can't believe you've played 15 PSP games and none of them were Wipeout Pure. You seem to like racing games well enough, so what put you off Wipeout?

I got mine with the thought that it would not get everyday use but rather be used at various times for trips, visiting the inlaws, nights stuck oncall in the hospital with downtime. For that reason, I dont mind that my use is sporadic. It frustrates me though that I need to pay 49 bucks a game for my sporadic use. Anytime I try to rent a game locally- they are out of what I want. My use is too infrequent to justify a gamefly or similar subscription.
I would love to know if at any point 2K sports are going to port any of their titles over such as hoops or hockey because that would be a huge seller for me.
Has anyone tried the Video vault software for transferring existing dvds to psp format????

I'm still in love with mine. Moreso now that there are new games out for it. I've read where some people call it a stripped down PS2, is that such a bad thing? For people who travel daily and for a living it is truly a godsend.
I came across this site:
http://www.flixpo.com/
It has PSP and IPOD videos for download, I hav'nt tried it yet but will later and hope its all it says it is.

I'm a little disappointed in how few really great, polished titles there are, but there has always been at least one game at a given time that completely hooks me. The first couple months it was Burnout, and lately it's GTA, which I think is a terrific translation. From subway commutes to clothes shopping with the woman, it has transformed formerly mind-numbingly boring moments into perfectly tolerable ones.
I think its been a worthwhile purchase - I've had a lot of fun with the emus (finally got to finish Link to the Past & Legend of the Mystical Ninja for the SNES) and the PSP games themselves have been pretty good. My favourites are:
i. Burnout Legends - a damn good port with tracks from BO2 and 3 and good controls
ii. FIFA 06 - even though it doesn't have a manager mode, this has been a lot of fun
iii. Lumines
iv. Virtua Tennis
v. Wipeout
One problem for me has been the whole firmware/copy protection thing - I'm really enjoying the emulators but at the same time I'd love to play GTA: LCS, unfortunately you pretty much HAVE to upgrade the firmware to play it.
