OT: Metal Gear Solid 4

Post by tsunami »

For anyone interested, here's a link to the newly released trailer for MGS4: Guns of the Patriots. From what I've read it is running real-time on alpha dev kits but it is not actual gameplay. Still, looks pretty impressive. I don't think it matches up the Killzone footage, but we all know that was pre-rendered. So, PS3 is looking like quite a powerful machine. Leave it to Kojima to start pushing the envelope already.

(Had to dig this one up.)

Anyway, rumor is that MGS4 will feature 90 minute, that's NINETY MINUTE, that's ONE AND A HALF HOUR, cut-scenes.

http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3167942

lol

Even if that's true I still bet you the mainstream gaming press will give it a 10/10. :)

90 minutes...lord have mercy.

Some of the cut scenes in MG2 were just painful to watch.

And if I remember correctly YOU had to watch them as I don't think there was a way to bypass it.

OT but I wish Konami would release Zone of the Enders. That game was really cool on the PS2 and I remember buying the game and it coming with the MGS2 demo disc.

More justification for why I have absolutely no interest in this title. Five minutes worth of cut scenes are too much from most of the Japanese games- the plot lines are just painfully ridiculous.

I didn't even bother preordering MGS4, once Splinter Cell came on the gaming scene I lost total interest in the MGS series.

I'm more into realistic scenarios which is what Splinter Cell tries to do, a believable, this could happen storyline. I now lose all sense of immersion whenever I see a startled guard with an exclamation point over his head.

MGS depends to much on over the top dramatic storylines whereas SC goes for modern day scenarios.

I never said I preferred it to SC....I dont...I like SC better but MGS2 was fun to play except for the cut scenes.

Sorry, I was referring to me in the post as to why I prefer SC over MGS. The only MGS I liked was on the original Playstation back in 97 or 98 I forget which year it was released.

I loved MGS 1 and played it to death. MGS2 was a massive dissapointment, mainly because of the insanely long cut-scenes and asinine (I'm being kind) plot. The bait and switch with Raiden was particularly stupid.

I think the part that did it in for me is where you are trying to snipe bad guys from across a dam-like structure while Otacon is talking about having sex with his step-mother.

(Yes, that last paragraph is TRUE.)

That said, I thought MGS 3 was awesome and almost Kojima's 'apology' for MGS2 - the plot, while still over the top, at least made some sense and I loved the camoflage aspect and the brilliant boss battles. The last 30 minutes of MGS 3 are some of the most fun I've had in a videogame.

I was looking forward to MGS4 but if it's true that it has 60 or 90 minute cutscenes I think I'm going to pass. Like 99% of the guys here my playtime is limited and I'm not going to spend the majority of my time sitting through a cut-scene when I could be actually playing. It's also indicative of lazy game design/story telling - games like Half-Life tell a story without cutscenes and even RPGs like Mass Effect don't have insanely long cut-scenes.

I never cared for the MGS games, at least in so far as I couldn't STAND the story; incredibly cheesy, Japanese-to-English dialogue and an absurd premise.

The gameplay did keep me playing the games for a bit though.

I played the MGS4 Online Beta, and enjoyed it very much, as a much more cerebral and tactical form of shooter. I will probably pick the game up just for the online play.

Maybe I need to try MGS3 sometime. MGS2 was such a massive disappointment after the truly great MGS1 I haven't touched the series since.

I'm on the fence too. Like others here, I really don't care for the storytelling and hour cut-scenes.

However, the stealth gameplay still looks great and I'm sure the overall presentation and immersion will be stellar.

There are just too many games to get through these days - but it's something I will consider picking up if the impressions/reviews are through the roof.

That is all but guaranteed to happen. As many of us here lament the disappointment of MGS2, even that got a 9.7 from IGN and a 9.6 from Gamespot, along with perfect 10s from other websites. Unfortunately reviews for such a beloved and hyped franchise have become pretty useless.

"Just a box" is still a running joke with my wife and I.

I saw one 100/100 review for this on Metacritic. I guess when you're young, single, and need a break between hentai beat-off sessions, 90-minute cutscenes seem inviting.

I'll be waiting for reviews on MSG4. I haven't played the series since the PSOne. I still haven't bought a game for the PS3 other than MLB The Show.

Well being a huge fan of the first Solid game on the PS1 and a huge fan of the ship portion of MGS2 I had to get this game. I thought MGS3 was a step in the right direction but felt it was overly difficult having to fight the controls after playing games like Splinter Cell. I know MGS3 Subsistence mapped the camera to the right analog stick but I wasn't about to buy the game again.

That being said I am pretty darn blown away by MGS4 so far. The graphics are gorgeous, the controls are solid (pun intended  ), and the story (so far) is interesting. I've played for a couple of hours and while there are definitely cutscenes, and lengthy ones at that, they are so well done that I find myself enjoying them more than I thought I would. Being a player of JRPG's cutscenes don't really bother me though.

I was not a fan of the Metal Gear Online beta either yet I find myself having more fun with the final version. Maybe it's because it isn't scaled back but whatever the reason the online was actually fun when I tried it earlier. It's pretty deep too since you have one character with 4 ability slots and around 12-16 abilities to choose from.

I can't say what the future story will bring but I can say that if you enjoyed the first Metal Gear Solid and the Snake portions of Metal Gear Solid 2 I'd be surprised if you didn't eat MGS4 up.

Weird, I would have thought this game would have interested me but after reading the Eurogamer review and a couple of others about the insane installs and humongous cutscenes I lost all interest in the game.

So has anyone figured out what the actual length is on the gameplay side.

I've never played any of the games in the series, but I'm interested in renting the game. IGN gave it a tremendous review.
