OK folks, it looks like ReDy has opened the proverbial Pandora's box here. . .
I would suggest we do a 10 or 11 game season, rather than a full round-robin format. That way, we could have as many participants as would like to be a part of it, without having a monstrous juggernaut that lasts into February.
Back in the day over at SR, pacuca set up a nicely scheduled, 2-division format for the 18 or 20 teams in the league. Divisions were determined by overall team quality, so the big-time teams like USC and Ohio St. and Miami were in the top division, and Purdue and UMD and Wash U. were in the lower division. . . no, wait. . . my Wash U team was in the top division getting it's ass kicked while the likes of ND were in the lower division beating up on Marshall
(I think after playing me, bkrich described my squad as 'the best one-win team in the league'
). Anyway, I remember playing eveyone in my division once and maybe one or two teams in the other division. We did a sort of coaches' poll to determine rankings, and at the end had an AWESOME Bowl season where teams were matched up based on those rankings. It all worked out really, really well, and created some amazingly tense situations, since the top few teams were fighting for undefeated supremacy, and that single loss loomed each and every week. The rest of us fought for a place in the standings. The Bowl game was tremendous fun, since we all treated it like a Bowl game - little pressure, guns a-blazin', wide open play. The only thing lacking was that Bowl games were against teams we had already played, for the most part, as opposed to the real deal where teams play opponents they'd never normally see.
Anyway, I would suggest we set up a similar formula. Instead of a set schedule, we had a list of the teams we were supposed to play, with home and away determined by the commish. We had 2 game nights a week where folks would gather in an SR lobby and match up according to who still had to play whom; that way some guys could miss a game night or two, or even an entire week or more, and still be able to get all their games in by the end without holding up everyone else's progress, as happens in the 2K leagues. Two games in one night was not uncommon in the early stages when everyone still had a lot of games to play. Only near the end did we have to really schedule our games with our opponents. The only thing I really missed was the ability to 'tune in' and observe the big late-season games and the big bowl matchups, but hey, that's what the game reports were for!
So, 10 game schedules, 8- or 9-team divisions (or whatever works with the numbers we have) based on the teams' overall EA ratings, two informal game-nights a week (obviously with the option to schedule a specific game any time it would be convenient to do so for the two participants), and a coaches' poll ranking system that, combined with the records, would lead to some very well-matched Bowl Game pairings.
Does that sound good?
I wouldn't know how to set up the polls or do the math to crank out the rankings. And I could never do what blublub did with the website he set up for the league. But I could assist in figuring out the schedules and setting up the divisions, etc. We would need to come to a consensus on difficulty level (probably one down from the top setting is best, but with human vs. human, any diff. would be fair, so it's not cut and dried by any means), and game length (I prefer a longer game, but 7 min. quarters could make 2-a-nights less likely), that sort of stuff. And then there is the inevitable fight among those who want the same teams that would have to be settled.
As is, I have no clue who I would want to take. UMD is a good choice for me, but then again I am always happy to suffer through with my Air Force option attack!
All this, of course, assuming that the game works well online and is fun to play. . . .

Is this one of those leagues that will start and then fall apart midway through the season or will it actually be played out until the end? I'm sorry to sound like such a d@#$ but I have yet to join a league here, or anywhere for that matter, that was actually finished. On paper the idea of a league makes me cream my pants but in theory I have been nothing but disappointed.
I am a patient boy.
I wait, I wait, I wait, I wait.
My time is water down a drain.

I'll take Florida.
And I should be able to put up the league software I had up last year (with a schedule, standings, etc.), for (relatively) easy league management. I don't want to bother doing that yet until we know the game is good (we did that last year and then the league fell apart because the game was poor). But I'll be happy to do it this year, given that the game is worth it.

Well, Scoop, no one can guarantee anything when it comes to online gaming, as you well know.ScoopBrady wrote:Is this one of those leagues that will start and then fall apart midway through the season or will it actually be played out until the end? However, I believe the bulk of your frustrations have stemmed from the games that support automated online leagues. These games require that the same number of people who start, finish the league. They also create a myriad of scheduling problems, since the schedules are set in stone and the weeks cannot be advanced until everyone plays his game and/or some games are 'coin tossed.'
My memory of the SR league a couple years ago was that everyone who stared finished, but I think that may be pretty far from the truth. It is more likely that a few guys dropped out for whatever reasons, and I never really noticed since it didn't directly affect my expereince in the league.
With the open structure of a sefl-reported type of league (as opposed to the automated online, 2K-type leagues), the first few weeks of league play should see nearly everyone getting in more than one game a week. As the schedule gets played out, it will become harder for everyone to get his games in, since there will be fewer potential opponents left to play, but guys can individually set up times to play that are outside of the loosely structured 'league game nights.'
So, to sum up, I would think there will be a few who sign up and don't en up following through to the end of the season. But that will not prevent those who are playing from finishing a satisfying season, unlike the rigidly structured 2K leagues. In fact, those rigid structures are precisely the reason I didn't sign up for Abner's big NFL 2K5 season, or the NCAA hoops tourney, or whatever else there was (a Rivals league, I think, way back when. . .). It wasn't that I didn't want to be part of league play, it was that I foresaw the rigid schedules as a major problem that would continuously rear it's head.
Also, if we agree to a ten-game schedule as opposed to a full round-robin, then as many or as few who want to be a part can feel free to sign up and we'll see how it goes. Sure it will be inconvenient if we have to reschedule some teams' later games due to teams on their schedules leaving the league, but at least individual 'deadbeats' will decidedly NOT hold the entire league hostage by missing a week or two. Outside of that, what can be said? The one thing I would really insist on is that the winner of each game post a game report, however short or long, even if it's just two lines with the score and a key play, but at least some note in the league thread, to let everyone keep tabs on what is up around the league. No, we wouldn't have stats or injuries or that stuff, but to my mind that is an easy concession to make in order to avoid 'deadbeat-itis.'
Well aparently the interest it there, the Longhorns are mine.
Redneck, this will be on Xbox.
Here's what we have so far in terms of teams taken. I won't set anything up until the game comes out and everyone has had a chance to get familiar with it and make a final team decision.
AtXj - Texas
Rally Monkey - Michigan
Bill Abner - Ohio State
Boltman - Hawaii or UCLA(if anyone wants one of these teams Bolt is stuck with the other one unless he makes a solid decision
)
Zeppo - UMD, Air Force...?(still needs a solid decision)
dbdynasty - Miami
TheTruth - Arkansas
Danimal - Iowa
Pigpen - San Diego State
ScoopBrady - Undecided
Brando - Undecided
Jared - Florida
Redneck - Tennesse
Sully - Oklahoma
Badgun - Florida St.
Again, we still have plenty of time before anything is official so feel free to change your mind as far as team choice goes.
Updates are now being made in my first post.

Actually, the NFL 2K5 league we had last year almost made it to the end. I believe it would have had the real season not ended. But we were in February and no one really felt like playing football anymore.ScoopBrady wrote:Is this one of those leagues that will start and then fall apart midway through the season or will it actually be played out until the end? Get good people in the league...mostly from here and get a good hands on guy to run it and it will work in my opinion. I nominate Bill Abner since he was really the only thing that held our league together.
