Not sure why I even wasted my time or had my hopes up that this year´s version would be at least a little more challanging. I picked it up today at EB (pre-owned, so already a bad omen) at 10:10am. I got it home and teed up at 11:45am. I play Bethpage Black with back tees, windy, long rough, difficult pins and I use Furyk. I shoot a bogey-free 15 under. I was at EB at 12:45pm. I got back home at 1:15pm with a copy of Animal Crossing for the Cube and didn´t even miss the start of the Winston Cup race. Another fine job EA. That effort is almost as bad as Thunder on the PC. Stick with PC golf and console NASCAR.

[ This message was edited by: btmgov on 05-10-2003 18:43 ]

Console Nascar?!? Nascar on the PC is ruled by Papyrus Nascar Racing 2003.

EA still has a long way to go to catch up to Payprus in Nascar for the PC, but I think Thunder 2004 is a contiuned step in the right direction from 2003. It is definitely a more realistic sim than the console version of the game. What did you like better about console Nascar Thunder 2004 over the PC version?

The sweet spot in the analog swing in Tiger Woods for the consoles is wider than Anna Nicole Smith´s ass. It´s almost impossible to hook or slice any shot.

Merge that with the ability to change the spin on the ball while its in the air, and Tiger is just too damn easy on the consoles. Fun and pretty with a lot of modes, but too damn easy.
did you use a new created golfer, or one of the default pros?

Were you using power boost?

Did you turn off aiming marker info?

Did you turn off cady tips?

Did you turn off Swing Aid?

Not being sarcastic by any means here. I´ve found it much more difficult with these options turned off.

Regardless, the PC version is without a doubt, the much better version. Also, even created characters shoot rediculous scores when their stats are maxed.

Still though, I think the console version is just fine.... when you accept it for what it is. An arcade golf game with a few simulation elements added. Those being the courses, pros, etc.

It has been posted here, OS, SR, etc. that the only way to make TW console challenging is to use a created golfer with low stats. Keep everything at 10% except for driving distance and it can be challenging. TW PC challenging? No way, but I doubt someone can break 60 with low stats and fast fairways, back tees, windy conditions, at least medium green speed and rough, no aids turned on, no power boost, no spin, etc.

Does it suck that you can´t use the pro golfers in the game? Yes, but there is still a lot of fun to be had in the game with created golfers IMO. What I have done is create one golfer that I use for only casual rounds and multi-player where all I have done is increase driving distance to 65. This gives me the ability to drive in the 250-300 range (default of 10 is actually too low for distance). I miss some fairways with driving accuracy at 10. Maybe I just suck, but the sweet spot is MUCH lower with a created golfer. I created another golfer that I will allow to build up some stats to work through the scenarios, etc.

I´m having fun, but there is no way I could have fun playing with the Pros. It´s way too easy.

The PC version isn´t difficult on the easier levels, but if you go into simulation mode and then bump up the difficulty level it can become much more of a challenge.

I´ve started a new golfer in career mode, and yes on rookie level it is very easy... even for my created golfer. Not until you reach the higher levels of difficulty to you have to set up your own shot, select your own club, use less than 100 percet (between club distances) etc.

Once you get there, the game becomes quite a challenge and a lot of fun.

Stanley:

I took your advice and turned all assists off except for ball spin, as pros can put spin on the ball in reality. They just can´t change the spin mid-flight like you can in Tiger.

I used Notah Begay Jr. on Pinehurst with wind, long tees, fast greens, tall roughs. Sure, I could have used a created player, but one of the attractions for me in this game is the ability to use pros. We don´t use fictitious teams in our football games, do we?

Anyways, with your settings, I still was able to shoot around par or 1- or 2-over my first try. The only assist that I missed was Caddy Tips. Reading the greens is WAY tougher with just the grid. But I was getting a much better feel for that after just 18 holes.

Otherwise, I hit the ball from the tee and fairways just as straight and long without the assists as I did with them. But putting was much more challenging.

I can´t rip Tiger. It´s quite fun, and the various play modes add plenty of depth to the game. But the basic gameplay mechanics are too easy.

I don´t want to be limited to using only a created player with 10 percent or lower in his attributes. I want to play as pros and be challenged, and Tiger doesn´t do that.
James:

Hopefully! Plus playing foursomes on XBL will be very cool.

It still amazes me that the most realistic console golf game is one of the most cartoonish-looking of them all: Hot Shots Golf for the PSX.

But I also can say the same for Formula One games. The most realistic F1 console game I´ve played remains Formula 1: Championship Edition, a PSX game that was released in late 1996 or early 1997. And yes, I´ve played Grand Prix Challenge for the PS2!

Unfortuanately, I have a really bad feeling that Links for X-Box is NOT going to resolve this issue. I hope it does, however, all the gameplay movies I have seen lead me to beleive it is a pretty straight forwrd swing and putt affair. Of course I dont´ know for sure, that´s just the sense I get when looking at the gameplay.

Does anyone else notice this ?

I hope I am wrong as I am REALLY looking forward to this title, but...

Spooky I would imagine that it would have to be different in some extent to Tiger. The "deadzone" is pretty large in Tiger to do any damage.

Hopefully they will make it a challange on the harder levels of Links rather than having your Super Tiger opponent also shoot 60.
