Gentlemen, I can´t still can´t believe my luck at being able to say this, but...

I WAS THERE!!

I planted my posterior in Section 211 Row 12 Seat 102 at 11:45a.m. and did not leave the immediate area until I was danced and screamed out at 6:45p.m.

In the interim I had the single greatest sports day of my life...even more exciting than Super Bowl XX, which as any real Bears fan will tell you was a fait accompli anyway

Obviously me and my buddies knew it was *possible* that they could clinch. But like the good Cub fans that we are, we saw that as easily the least likely scenario. Even as it became more and more likely, I was as much shocked as I was excited...well maybe not.

When they turned that final double play, it was as emotional as I´ve ever been about a sporting event. Granted, they´ve won a few division titles in my lifetime, and one of those abortions known as the Wild Card. But actually being in Wrigley, where I´d sat through so much misery, when they won something like this was just awesome.

I have been a major Dusty Baker critic all year. I still think he´s got several screws loose as an x´s and o´x man, but the man has some kind of mojo.

The playoffs will obviously be a tough road for a team as offensively challenged as the Cubs, but Atlanta is an issue for tomorrow. For tonight, in the gloaming, there was magic in Wrigley.

I´ve always been a big Dusty Baker fan for the simple reason, the man can Manage a team, period. He reminds me of a Phil Jackson type of manager, he knows how to massage ego´s and people want to play for him.

Sport73,

Yeah I live in Wilmette (northern suburb). Grew up in the ´North Shore´ area. How long have you been in Naperville ? Nice place. Where are you moving too ???

Rob,

Congrats on the great accomplishement of being at Wrigley yesterday. I am JEALOUS ! I was stuck at Great America all day (we had free tickets from ´Chrysler´) but I was able to get back in time to see the last half of the second game. The energy there must have been insane !!!

Spooky,

I live in LaGrange.

The energy was ridiculous. The interesting thing was innings 3-8 of game 2. The place was as subdued as I´ve ever heard it. We were all pretty much in shock. Messmer even missed some pitching changes and announced another after 3 hitters LOL It was very Twilight Zone.

But once the 8th rolled around, everyone was out of their minds

Cubs clinch and then promptly get eliminated by the Braves...just like the last time they were in the playoffs.

I was at game 3 when the Braves swept the Cubs in 98...damn it was a beautiful thing. Playoffs at Wrigley...great experience.

No piss, just reality. But yeah...it´s gonna be disappointing again for the Cubbies.

Although, I´m now digging my grave if they do come out and beat the Braves. They´ve got the pitching to do it...they just gotta hope they can score some runs.

Nice job Cubbies...the better team won the Central Division. Now you will get a small taste of what it means to be an Astros fan. Have fun while you can because the Braves are about to ***** slap the Cubbies just like they have done to the Astros year after year.

cd, Handled with class. I was surprised that the Astros players were as nasty as they were about things, but then again the way they went out was pretty awful.

db, This is a VERY different matchup than in 98. Obviously, the Braves are the favorites again, but the way these teams are built are completely different.

I´d still bet on the Braves, but it´s baseball. 5 game series in baseball are a crap shoot, as is the post-season in general. I´m sure that Braves fans understand that as well as anyone Having to face Wood, Zambrano and a tired but still dominant Prior is tough for any lineup. Good luck to you and your Braves.

What happened ? What did the Astros do ?

Anyway, I have no expectations for this series. All I know is that the Cubs have really seemed to step up and have really seemed to ´gel´ as a team. We all know about their starting pitching but now the bats are hot too(which really is not a fluke, it was a fluke that the offensive line up was not producing, now they are just doing what they normally should and can do).

There is no doubt that Atlanta is in a league of their own, but maybe they will not be totally prepared for what the Cubs can challange them with. Who knows !?!?!?

One thing is for sure, I do feel a lot more confident about this Cubs team than I did about the ´98 team.

You never know...

As I can speak for all Cardinal fans, GO Braves, GO Giants, GO Marlins! Any team but Corky Sosa and the Flubs. At least here in St. Louis, we all get a huge laugh at the Cubs "curse" and the drought of a World Series championship. Sorry Chi-town......the playoffs aren´t good enough. I still look forward to 2008 when we can celebrate 100 years of mediocrity.
