Sorry to hear that Squid. What were you doing?

Right now, I'm working on a 9-12 month project with Bausch & Lomb as a buyer. It pays fairly well, but I don't get any benefits. Not good. So here's my dilema.

I'm still looking for something full time, but there just isn't a lot of opportunities right now. Just got turned down for a job yesterday that I really wanted. However, I was offered a job to work in claims (auto, property), but the pay is sh**ty and the hours are from 10:45-7:00. I'd never see my kids except in the morning and right before they go to sleep. But of course they have excellent insurance and benefits. If I take that job, then I'm going completely the other direction with my career. The wife agrees I should stay on at Bausch and we'll figure something out. If anything, it'll look good on my resume.

Regardless, keep your chin up Squid. You're not alone. It just feels that way at times.

Here's the funny thing. I'm not laid off yet. Basically one of my good friends at the firm here is part of that management team that makes those decisions. He basically told me that myself and 2 others are gone, but he doesn't know when I will be let go.

So, frankly, this is kind of a blessing in disguise. I'm now able to search for jobs while still getting a paycheck. Only bad thing is that I'm sitting here at work knowing that I'm gone, but I have to act like I don't know!

Squid, if you need someone to talk to about this, I'm your man. I went through the EXACT same scenario back in August. They called me in and told me my job was bein eliminated. I had 2 choices; stay on until the end of the year (approx. 4 months) or take the (measley) severence package of 4 weeks. With the way the market was, I stayed at the job, because at least I had 4 months to look.

I found another job after about 8 weeks of active seeking. The job hunt was slowed by still working, but at least I didn't have to hide the fact I was looking ;) In the end I took a step up postion-wise, with my first raise in 4 years. Only drawback is the drive, which is about 35 miles each way.

I was in shock for about a week. Finding a new job may take a while, depending on what it is you do, where you are located, how open your search is, etc... The market still isn't great, but there are jobs out there. It just may take a little time to find one.

BTW, what is it you do anyways?

I'm located in Memphis. I work with owners, senior executives, and advisors of public and private businesses to overcome ownership issues. Most of these issues require business owners and executives to have a precise understanding of the value of their companies so that they can maximize their opportunities or minimize their financial, regulatory and legal threats. These opportunities range from selling or buying their companies to developing formal reports and opinions used in the legal, tax and regulatory environments.

Can anyone tell that I was working on my resume this morning? I'm looking here and in Charlotte since the wife is from there and I can tell she wants to go back.

That sucks.

I bet you it'll be Friday, or the end of your pay period.

I got laid off a couple years ago. It was on a Friday, but I had a feeling it was coming just by the way some people acted around me from about Wednesday on. That's when they made the decision. It sucks knowing, but not "officially" knowing.

Plus the 5 or 6 people that got laid off before me also found out on a Friday.

Good luck!

we get paid again on the 15th, that's a week from Friday. We'll see. No use worrying, need to push ahead.

Good luck squid.

Your book is on the way as well, so keep an eye out for it.

Sorry to hear that squid. Hang in there man, I've been through getting laid off and there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Things can get tight for a while but whatever doesn't kill us makes us stronger right? Good luck on the job search.

Getting laid off sucks. Must be time for it or something. My brother told me he got laid off last week (nice severance though so he's not freaking out yet) and 2 of my coworkers are toast (including one who's been here for 7 years plus) by the end of April. On a positive note (gotta keep positive right) things like this can lead people to opportunities they never would have seen otherwise. Good luck.

That's why I'm not freaking. The man upstairs has a plan. It could be to smite me, but I'd rather think he's doing it for the better.

My company stock goes down like a lot of other stocks whenever the price of oil shoots up (and the oil price doesn't have much do with the fundamentals, apparently).

We sell some consumer products and purely discretionary items so the reasoning is that higher energy prices makes people spend less on these types of products.

Makes you think about what kind of money to spend on vacation, which is basically reinforcing the same thinking which makes the markets react to daily price fluctuations.

Does anyone else get an Office Space vibe off this? "I work with the customers so the engineers don't have to. I have people skills dammit!" :)

Seriously, FSquid, sorry about the bad news. I think most of us have been around that block before and it sucks. Best of luck finding something new that's hopefully an even better gig!

Sorry to hear the news Squid, keep the chip up and look at it as time for a career change.

At the rate Calapri is going there might be an opening for you. ;)

I kid because I care.

I am amazed that Hallmark's headhunters missed you as you were graduating from college. You have the compassion and warmth of a witches titty in a brass bra.
