MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Manchester United captain Roy Keane will have hip surgery and be sidelined for up to three months, allowing him to avoid serving a potential seven-match ban.
The fiery Irish midfielder faces a three-match suspension after receiving a red card for elbowing Sunderland´s Jason McAteer in a 1-1 draw Saturday.
Keane also is in line for a likely four-match ban after admitting in his autobiography that he set out to injure Manchester City´s Alfe Inge Haaland last season.
The timing of the surgery, however, means the Football Association punishments will be irrelevant. By the time Keane returns in late December, the suspensions will have expired.
Keane won´t play in United´s game Tuesday night against Middlesbrough.
United manager Alex Ferguson said he wanted Keane to have the operation at the end of last season, but the midfielder wanted to go the World Cup with Ireland. However, he was sent home from training camp after a dispute with manager Mick McCarthy.
On Saturday, Keane was sent off for the 10th time in his career after elbowing McAteer in the head.
Yeah, you can look at this two ways. Good that Captain Insano is out for three months, but the timing is pretty suspect, isn´t it?

Keane faces a three-match ban for elbowing McIteer -- finally saw footage of it last night, pretty brutal -- and also faces a longer ban from the FA for admitting in his autobiography that he meant to injure Haaland in the savage studs-up attack two years ago.

So Sir ExLax, the defender that is all of Roy, urges him to get surgery now. How convenient.

I can only hope Adam Crozier and his cronies at the FA see through this stunt and wait to levy punishment on Roybocop for the Haaland incident until after Keane is fit following the hip surgery.

Do I hate Man U? Yes. Let me count the ways. DaveT010, you and I may support different clubs, but we´re footie brothers in one regard: We all hate ManUre.
