What are you listening to?

Thought it might be nice to have a constructive thread where we're not yelling about basketball predictions, baseball games, and right-to-die issues. :D

A few things I've been treating my ears to (with some singles highlights for your downloaders):

--And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead, World's Apart. I was pleasantly surprised to see these guys pop up in MVP 2005. A very good album, although not as good as their last. Fuses the energy of punk with the structure of Pink Floyd, down to the "Shine on You Crazy Diamond" female vocals. The title track and "The Rest Will Follow" are particularly good.

--Interpol, Antics. This is what 80s retro rock is supposed to sound like. "Evil" and "Slow Hands" mesh drum beats and guitar riffs perfectly.

--The Mobius Band, City vs. Country EP. One of the best music tips I've ever gotten from Entertainment Weekly. Bloopy electronic pop like The Postal Service, but with guitars that give the tracks an extra bite. Check out the title track and "Starts Off With a Bang."

--Ted Leo and the Pharmacists. I heard "Where Have All the Rude Boys Gone" and downloaded a bunch of tunes from their Web site. Very energetic, a bit raw in parts, but also very melodic in a Clash sort of way. You should definitely check out the Rude Boys track and the sweeping "Biomusicology."

--The Jam, boxed set. The Ted Leo discovery got me back into a Jam kick (thanks to a cover of "Ghosts."). After The Clash, I think these guys were the greatest band to come out of the UK punk scene. They were the only ones who completely changed and expanded their sound without losing their edge or running up against musical limitations. I am enough of a fan to own the boxed set, but check out "That's Entertainment," "In the City," and "Down in the Tube Station at Midnight."

The new Kings of Leon cd is excellent, if you liked their first album. I saw that they're opening up for U2 on their tour, so maybe some more people will begin to hear of them that way. Good ol' simple rock and roll.

Off topic, but there's a new Johnny Cash concert dvd coming out next week that I'm really looking forward to watching. I've always wanted to see the Man in Black doing some of his 90s work and, while it will not have the last couple of cds, it does have Delia and Let the Train Blow its Whistle so I'm sold.

Pre-Yankee Hotel Foxtrot Wilco - I was late on board with them, so I have plenty of back catalog to work through. Interesting to hear the band progress...might even like the older stuff better.

Bright Eyes two new albums - two different albums, but both are enjoyable. My first time listening to Oberst; while I think it is very good music, it doesn't seem too groundbreaking for all of the fuss about him.

Whatever pops up on my archos 20 gig unit. It's on a random playlist. Currently listening to Bob Dylan's "Desolation Row" from the Live 1966 album. It's #2148 of some 3500+ songs on the thing. Takes me about 3-4 months to get through the rotation. Also heard some Wilco, Moby, Ella Fitzgerald, Hooverphonic, Jewel, and Replacements, and Indigo Girls today.

Yes, it definitely was...even though that was one of my least favorite tracks on the album.

some good calls there, PK - is the Boards Of Canada one just a single track, coz I've got both their CDs. Been listening to Talking Heads again, after 'The Name of this Band is' got released on CD recently..I remember buying the vinyl in 83 or 84....

My recent listening pleasure

Joy Division - 'Unknown Pleasures'...is it really 25 yrs since Ian Curtis did himself in ? Half my school was walking round with black armbands the day after, but then JD have been described as 'Manchester in vinyl form'.

Morrissey - 'You Are the Quarry'...back to form for Mozza

Durutti Column - 'Without Mercy'

Wall of Voodoo - 'Grandma's House'

and for some amusement on the way to work...

Half Man Half Biscuit - 'Cammell Laird Social Club' Great as this is, and it still raises many a wry smile on repeated listening, I think that you'd probably have to have the Englishman's traditional sense of the absurd to really get it, plus the social and TV references wouldn't mean too much. Still, give them a go..try this album or 'Trouble over Bridgewater' If the 2 titles give you an idea of what's inside, you won't be disappointed.

Dave:

"Obtained" Boards of Canada from a "sharing source," as I did all of these albums, so I'm not sure of its origin. Honestly, I heard Boards recently on a streaming ambient Web station and really liked it, so I did a Boards search at one of my "sharing sources" and found this.

Take care,
PK

You'll have to forgive me...it's been a LONG time since I had that album, and I don't remember much more than that, except that I think I wore out 2 or 3 cassettes of that album back in the day...

I liked "Walk this Way", but it got very overplayed...

PK - if you want the full things, let me know and I'll stick them on a CD for ya, with some other stuff.

You ever get your way through that Manchester CD I did for you..not exactly sunny pop tunes.. :D

Dave:

I did, and yeah, I was reaching for a bottle of Johnnie Walker after listening to that. Still some compelling stuff there that I've enjoyed again, thanks.

I'll take you up on your Boards offer. No worries, no hurries, mate. At your convenience.

Thanks again!

Kaiser Chiefs - Employment
Bloc Party - Silent Alarm
Head Automatica - Decadence
Interpol - Antics
Morrissey - You Are The Quarry
Queen - The Platinum Collection
Green Day - American Idiot, still...started listening to Kerplunk again too.

Will shortly be adding the debut album by obscure, very peculiar Brit band Do Me Bad Things to that list. Eagerly awaiting the new Oasis album, although I'm certain I already know what it'll sound like. In truth, I guess that's why I'm eagerly awaiting it...also going back and listening to old Britpop, being an indie kid at heart - Suede, Supergrass and all that.

Dave, given that I only know one Half Man Half Biscuit song (Bob Wilson Anchorman), is their back catalogue worth me exploring?

Cheers,
Adam

*Edit - now with added Dave.

As for me:

The Complete Motown Recordings (1959-1961)
-Kids, this is MUSIC.

The Jesus & Mary Chain, 21 Singles
-Motown music with a guitar feedbacking over it.

The Psychedelic Furs, "Love My Way"
-Screams '80's.

The Arcade Fire, Funeral
-First Canadian band I have ever really liked. I know, sad.

Queens of the Stone Age, Lullabies to Paralyze
-They just f'n rock!

Jay-Z, The Blueprint
-I dismissed Jay-z before, but the boy is bad.

Miles Davis, Bitches Brew
-It takes a while to "get it", but I've been known to be slow.
