MVP Impressions

Post by JackB1 »

thought I would start one up :)

there is some guy over on the OS boards who has been playing all night and has posted some favorable impressions....he mentions that you can draw walks this year and that the lefty HR bug is no more! Seems to be a ton a sliders this year. Sounds promising.....

They have it over at my local EB Games, but the pre-order Nazis won't let me have one. GOD he was so f*cking smug when he asked me if I'd pre-ordered it. I am going to march down there and put a pencil in his eye.

Ha! I ran into the same Nazis at my local GameStop trying to get GT4 last night. The only difference was there's a Game Crazy store not 200 yards away with a big sign that said "GT4 IN STOCK NOW!"

I wanted to get it at Gamestop because I had a few bucks leftover on a gift card. It was 8:30 pm. They close at 9. They had a stack of GT4's sitting there. They said since I didn't reserve it I'd have to wait until tomorrow. I said, "C'mon man, don't make me go to Game Crazy."

They still said no.

So I just shrugged and went over to Game Crazy and got it no problem. I guess I'll use the gift card for a baseball game.

WTF? Were they expecting a mad rush of people who reserved it in the next 30 minutes? The store was empty.

Whatever...

They do it to encourage presells. From my understanding stores like EB and Gamestop are judged by corporate on how many presells they can generate. Fortunately my local EB doesn't do that but my local Gamestop does. It's the first thing they ask you when you inquire about a games release. "When are you expecting MVP Baseball for Xbox?" "Did you preorder?" "If it makes you happy then yes, I did."

did you walk by after, hold up the game then flip them off?

i did that at the dmv. wouldn't let me get my NC plates w/o NC insurance, my insurance co wouldn't let me get my insurance switched to NC w/o NC plates....just went to another DMV. stopped on the way back..went in to the mall where it is located, held up the plates, tapped on the glass....finger up.

iot wouldn't have pissed me off so much if they weren't complete c*** about it.

played for a few mins at the kiosk...seemed like last year...but a bit harder to hit the red pitching mark. all hits were fly balls. seems like last year's game.

just went to EB at lunchtime intending to purchase both MVP and ESPN, but came home with only ESPN. They had MVP running on the kiosk and it looked horrible to me. The graphics look too cartoony for this day and age. Kind of kills it for me. It plays OK, just looks unrealistic to me with the too bright colors, huge heads and overall cartoonlike appearance. No thanks!

I've read alot of goofy stuff going on in ESPN over at OS, but take that for what it's worth.

I traded in MM 2005 for MVP, heck for $10 I'll take the dive. I really like what I'm reading from most over at OS. (I hate all the kiddies at that site).

I still plan on getting MLB 2006 as soon as I read some impressions.

I've played a few games now, and I really like it. There is good variety to the foul balls, you even see guys foul them off their feet and hobble around. All star level feels identical to all star level last year so far. The game feels a little quicker and more responsive this year, especially when it comes to diving in the field. I've drawn 3, 3 and 4 walks in my games I have played. You can argue and call in the game, and depending on how fast you tap the Y button, your argument is more intense. If you pound on Y, you will see contact and an ejection. In the game I got Baker tossed, the CPU managed my bullpen well, bringing in Farnsworth in the 8th and Hawkins in the 9th. Some other cool things I've seen are more injuries, especially on plays where you dive. There seems to be more interaction with the ball and the stadium after a homerun too, as I had a homer by Nomar bounce on Waveland. The stadium graphics are there normal shimmery jaggy selves, but the player faces are extremely well. All in all, so far it is everything I had hoped for, which is a blast to play.

A couple of more impressions to add:

The variable strike zone and umpiring are really well done. I've had pitches show up as a yellow x outside of the zone a tad, only to be called a strike. Also, the umps will clearly blow calls on occassion. Playing as the Cubs, I caught a break in the 9th when the first bag ump called Jack Wilson out at first when he was clearly safe. This prompted McClendon to charge out of the dugout and chest bump the umpire, and be immediately ejected.

The CPU pitchers definitely have times where they lose control for a bit. I have seen guys throw 7-10 balls in a row during a few stretches. As for the human pitchers, it is much harder to throw strikes this year. You have a much smaller sweet spot for your location of the pitch on the meter. I've aimed pitches well inside the zone, only to miss by a relatively small margin and end up throwing a ball.

Man...I'm impressed with MVP too...weird. This season is going to suck. I'm sure MLB will be the dogs balls next week too, so I'm going to have to wade through 3 seasons. LOL.

The cannon sounds in MLB 2k5 aren't cartoony?? :)

Anyway, MVP was my must have baseball game and so far it hasn't disappointed. I haven't played it enough to start to give in-depth impressions. I think its fun and that's all I care about now in gaming.

I have MLB 2k5 coming through gamefly so I should be set later this week. It helps to stop the WE burnout that was coming. And I am also waiting for MLB 2006. If its good who knows what I'll be playing when the "real" season starts.

That's the exact same word I would use to describe MVP. I'm highly impressed with both games. There's just something about MVP, it's a blast to play. It's fun. All I wanted was last year's game, minues the bugs. It looks like it has delivered.

The manuals for both games really suck. I wish they would just outsource the manuals. Give me the game 2 weeks before it goes gold and i could do a better job.

I wish Take2 would start doing what Sega used to do and put an enhanced manual online. The 2K manual says nothing about franchise mode. And it says nothing about whether you can turn off the 2 button hitting like you could last year.

As for actual gameplay, I will know in a while. It is 70+ in Atlanta today and I am throwing on some shorts and grilling out tonight. 2 new baseballs games that I have anticipated is great, sitting outside in shorts in February is greater!

70+ ??

In Manchester, it is currently -5 and snowing (-5C, not F, thank goodness).

Still, the Forces of Darkness went down to defeat, so all's well with the world.

It's always 70 in LA...that's why there are a way too many people living here. I'd rather have sh*tty weather and no traffic personally.

That is why I have been playing it!!! To me, it is the most fun, especially multiplayer.

I still can't hit for spit in this game, but I think they did a super job with the fielding. That lag I used to feel when attempting to make throws as the meter filled up is totally gone. Smooth as silk.

Agreed. They also got rid of the lag with manual fielding where there was a little hesitation when taking control of the fielder. I'd have no complaints if I can get the hang of batting.

I have the PC version and the graphical choppiness has returned. Any throw across the diamond from 3B - 1B or vice versa is choppy as hell. I can't believe it. Its almost as bad as last year...maybe worse. Other than that its playing a favorable games of baseball.

I'm glad I went with the console version...it is quite a bit better than it was last year graphically.

Slumber,
I feel they toned down the hitting this year. I had a fantasy draft team single me to death. 20 hits 8 runs only 1 double and triple. I think they over corrected from last year's version. Good thing the slider's work...

Did I mention I'm having a ton of fun with MVP. :)
