Goodbye Dallas Burn...
...hello FC Dallas.
The Burn, to coincide with their move from the po' side of town (the Cotton Bowl in Fair Park, a mostly black and hispanic, economically disadvantaged area for those of you not familiar with Dallas) to the soccermom suburbs, have changed their name and unis for next year.
They will now be known as FC Dallas in keeping with a certain soccer tradition.
Thought I'd toss that out to you guys. Personally I'm happy with the name change, but I think the move to Frisco (not San Fran, but a high-dollar Dallas 'burb) will completely wipe out whatever latino fanbase they had. Mexicans in Frisco usually get pulled over.
Plus not playing in Dallas proper makes them feel more like a minor-league team rather than a full-fledged pro club.
But, whatever it takes to survive, I guess.

If they wanted to feel like a full-fledged pro club shouldn't they move to Arlington?mobiggins wrote: Plus not playing in Dallas proper makes them feel more like a minor-league team rather than a full-fledged pro club.

You've obviously never been to Frisco...Naples39 wrote:It's hard to argue with the name change and move when you've seen the Burn's crowds this season, last night being a great example.

I still consider Frisco a rural area. If I ever want to make a night of soccer followed by cow-tipping, I might check it out.mobiggins wrote:Yeah, slimer, although Arlington, Irving, etc. don't really count because they're sort of 'in the heart' of the metroplex, whereas Frisco is way the hell up there and was considered rural area a decade ago.
Unless you work up there or in Plano, I can't understand why anyone would ever go to Frisco.
I was forced to when my inlaws lived there. They moved there when it was just starting to get rolling. Now it just looks like an extension of bland Plano. Now the only reason for me to ever contemplate heading to Frisco is if I get into track racing and take a trip up to Dallas for a race in the Frisco velodrome.jujuhound76 wrote: Unless you work up there or in Plano, I can't understand why anyone would ever go to Frisco.
yeah, man I hear you there. They can make up any old excuse they want to, the real reason they're changing the name is because of that chant!!TheMightyPuck wrote:This totally sucks. One of my favorite chants when the Burn came to town was:
If it's not gonhorrea it's the Burn
If it's not gonhorrea it's the Burn
If it's not gonhorrea
If it's not gonhorrea
If it's not gonhorrea
it's the Burn

Seriously though, IMO these stadia need to be in urban settings, so that getting to them is not a huge adventure. What a pain in the ass it is for me in Manhattan to get out to the Swamp, it's really not much of a stretch to realize why the trip would be so unattractive to someone in Queens or Brooklyn. I feel the same way about baseball stadiums, too. The absolute best thing about camden yards was that it was placed at camden yards, right in the revitalized Inner Harbor area, near downtown, easy to access via a varitey of access roads and interstates. Or the MCI Center in DC, which is a HUGE improvement over the exceedingly rural and remote Capital Centre.
So, I'm none too happy about the placement of this one, or the new Chicago Fire one. But I guess having their own stadium is the trade off, so maybe it is for the best. If the Metros ever get their stadium (not holding my breath, here), it will be accessable via public transportation from the City. What a huge difference that will make to any fan in the 5 boroughs (or at least the four that are not Staten Island).
Still, I'm glad they are building the stadium, and i like the new name that is not a name. Metros are after all EFC, you all know that, right? The Empire Football Club. They won't acknowledge it, but we know that's the case.
