PS2 "Unable to read disk" message

Post by btmgov »

I have a movie that use to play without problem that now gets to a point and I get this message. I get this message if I attempt to access any sceen past this point on the disk. So far, I haven't encountered a problem with any other disk. Anyone have any ideas? I tried cleaning the disk and that didn't help. Tried standing the PS2 upright and that didn't help. Will cleaning the lens in the PS2 with a quality cleaning device help or is my PS2 getting ready to crap out? Thanks.

Goto TechTV's website and look up their article on repairing PS2's that have trouble reading certain discs (involves tightening the lens screw). I followed the instructions on my PS2 that was having probs reading DVDs, and now it works like new. Good luck!

I opened my PS2 to fix the same problem. In the set of instructions I received, I was to tighten a small screw on the lens mechanism. (Long story somewhere in the SR archives, if they exist.) Thus accomplished, the problem went away and my PS2 worked fine for a while, but when the problem happened again, I bought a DVD lens cleaner. One pass-through fixed it, and so far it hasn't happened again. Granted, this is the more expensive option, but it won't void your warranty like cracking the Sony seal will.

BTW, if you go this route, don't use a CD lens cleaner -- the brushes are too short.
