Who´s Getting MVP?

Post by grtwhtsk »

Just a week from today, it will be shipping. Anyone out there got that baby reserved. I think I´m going to put my money down today or tomorrow. I am just dying to play some baseball!

I´m sure I´ll end up picking another baseball game up sometime down the line.

In the past. I´ve jumped at ASB. This year I´m going to wait and see.

For those getting it for sure, Xbox or PS2?

Originally had ASB reserved, but I changed it over to MVP the day I picked up WE:7. There just appears to be a bigger overhaul in terms of improvement when comparing the two games. Getting it for the Xbox as I don´t envision having a whole lot of time to play online with a 2 year old and a 12 day old getting most of my attention.

I ordered it for Xbox. If MLB turns out to be great I will get that for PS2.

Will probably get it. Circuit City probably will have $10 gift card with it. Should show up on the Sunday circulars. Only thing is they typically don´t get games until Thursday or Friday but sometimes they´ve had it as early as Wednesdays.

Definitely PS2 for the online play. Will wait for word on the others, particularly how many people are playing them online.

Definitely the PS2 version, for the online support. Hopefully the servers they´re using are okay. Everyone talked about how NBA Live was unplayable online.

I´ve been playing MVP 2003 for Xbox with ´04 rosters just to bridge the gap until next week. Still a very fun game.

Dan:

First things first: Congrats on the new bambino!

As for baseball, I will buy nothing until I´ve rented the three games available this year for the Xbox, ESPN, ASB and MVP. If they´re all as mediocre as last year, I won´t buy a baseball title.

With Colin McRae 04, TOCA Race Driver 2 and IndyCar Series 2005 scheduled for release between now and May, I´ll have plenty of hopefully great games to keep me busy. I´d rather race than do anything else on my Xbox, so if the baseball games are a flawed lot like last year, no sweat off my ass.

I just preordered my copy of MVP (Xbox) yesterday. I´m even going to take off Wed. afternoon to play

I´m sure I´ll end up getting ESPN as well. ASB is not even on my radar. I read the previews, saw the videos, and it looks like more of the same. I bought ASb 2004 last year, but after a week a noticed too many gamekillers, and I don´t trust that they have all been fixed.

MVP looks and sounds vastly improved. I´m playing 2003 with updated rosters to keep me from going crazy waiting for 2004. 2003 has some issues, but it sound like they have been addressed this year.

I reserved MVP (PS2) last Friday. I may pick up ESPN also, but MVP is the only 2003 games I still play. The minor league play has me intersted.

I think because of the nature of the game, online performance should be better than basketball games. Should be more like football than hoops or hockey games.

BTW, what is everyone paying for game rentals? Out here, Blockbuster charges $6 plus tax for a week rental. You rent 3 games to decide which one you like and you´re in effect paying $40 or $50 plus $20 in rentals.
WCO:

I only rent on Wednesdays because a regional chain, Video King, has a promotion on that day called "Wacky Wednesdays." Any rental product in the store -- DVD, VHS or games -- can be rented for two nights for 99 cents.

Hell, I have walked out of there sometimes with two games and a movie for a whopping three bucks. I also can scrape up change from the cup holders in the car and rent a game for two nights. Don´t even have to open the wallet.

Can´t beat it.

I´m going to get MLB for the PS2 as that looks like the best game according to the movies and last years title. It definitely has me looking forward to it the most.

I´m also going to get ASB for the Xbox...I´ve always been a fan of that series, even though no one else is. I guess there are a few of us ASB fans out there, since they continue to make it year after year.

I am going to get MVP, but it´s going to be on the PC. The mod community is just too strong for that game as well. Not to mention, online play.

The only game I´m not going to get is ESPN. I´ve just grown stale on that series for some reason. It´s not like I´ve played the hell out of it lately either. I played maybe 40 or so games last year, and about the same the year before, but there were always ´other´ baseball titles out there that attracted my interest more. I have a feeling it has more to do with the graphics more than anything...you can only look at the same player model for every other player for so long before it starts to bother you. Once they introduce some player scaling and some actual differences in each player, maybe I´ll take a look. Fundamentally it´s not a bad game (the stealing issue pissed me off last year though) so I will probably try it at some point anyway.

db,

Just curious. As I recall last year when we all posted on SR, your main complaint about ASB was that it was too easy. More specific, the pitching was far too easy to pin point strikes and whatnot. I remember someone suggesting going in and editing the pitching abilities (accuracy, etc.). Did that ultimately save the game for you? Reason why I ask is while I enjoyed last year´s game, ineviteably it was the lack of "pitching challenge" that doomed the game for me.

Dan,

It helped but it didn´t FIX it completely. I made everyone have a C for control and I walked a few more guys but ultimately, I switched over to HH later in the season.

Supposedly they fixed it this year, but I can´t imagine it´s completely gone. It´s not like they´ve redone the entire engine or anything. They´ve also added another level of play that´s more difficult so maybe that will help even more with the ´easy´ gameplay that plagued it last year.

DB, I´m heartened by your endorsement of last year´s MLB. I´m also psyched for MLB 2005 but I figured 2005 would have to be some amazing turnaround from what I assumed was a dismal game last year. Apparently the foundation was already there. I keep trying to find a copy of 2004 on the cheap but can´t find it anywhere. Ah, well.

As for boring and over-accurate pitching mechanics, I´m surprised no one has tried to "out-EA" EA and map pitching to the right thumbstick. It could work sort of like the analog swing in the golf games, and your precision would effect the accuracy of the pitch. There could even be small variations in the required motion for specialty pitches. Aiming could still be done with the left stick. Seems like that would be the most immersive system possible with current controllers. Even velocity could be accounted for by the speed of your right thumb motion.
Hey Slum,

Yeah, I wasn´t too optomisitc going in, but after watching the videos of 2005, I had to give 2004 a shot and see what I was missing. It truely is a nice game. If they fix up the graphics (which they did, they looked pretty subpar for a PS2 game, but still years ahead of the HH series) and add more animations to add to the fluid game they arleady had, they would have a damn nice game.

The pitcher/batter interface is very very nice and the control is impeccable. I really didn´t believe it was going to be that good. I really took Cincy´s advice in picking it up and trying it out. Hell, I was so impressed, I picked up a PS2 (after selling my GC) just so I can play it when 2005 comes out. I guess we´ll just see in a couple weeks. But as of right now MLB is on the top of my list, along with ASB.

Passing on MVP, and picking up ASB for XBox and MLB for PS2. I´ll rent ESPN to check out FP mode, but it´s awfully hard to get past those awful swing animations and blah batting stances.

I think that´s just for the PC version, and who knows if the reports are even credible.

But I think MVP will be getting a lot more Xbox buyers now that Gamestop has changed the release date of both ASB versions to March 23rd.
